Chapter 41 - The Report

Marisol Vale's POV

I ran until my lungs burned and my legs screamed for mercy. Ran until the Direwolf's den was miles behind me and the forest gave way to familiar territory. Only then did I allow myself to slow, to press my back against a tree and gasp for air that tasted of copper and terror.

The light.

Gods, the light.

I squeezed my eyes shut, but the image remained burned into my vision, seared into the back of my eyelids where it pulsed like a second heartbeat. That infant, barely two weeks old, with eyes that had erupted into blinding silver-gold radiance. Light that pulsed with fury. Light that had felt like power pressing against my skin, demanding recognition, demanding fear.

Lycan-born.

Serenya had said it, but I hadn't believed. Thought she was exaggerating to justify her failure, to explain why trained hunters had fled from a pregnant woman. But now I'd seen it myself. Seen what Araya had become. What her child was.

My son. Dorian. Dead because of her.
