Chapter 132: Dumbledore Dilemma
2 May 1996, 7.40 am
Headmaster Office, Hogwarts
Since yesterday, Dumbledore still couldn't sleep. His mind kept replaying the scene from the DMLE office. A small boy, barely ten years old recounting what happen to him, after being attacked by eight Death Eaters and somehow survived without any scratched. Not only survived, he even killed three of them and heavily injured five more.
For the entire night, Dumbledore thoughts were restless. He felt uneasy because the boy didn't react like a normal child. No fear, no shock and no guilt. It reminded him too much of Tom Riddle when he first visited the orphanage decades ago. But Steve Roger looked even more dangerous because he could use magic without a wand. Even Dumbledore couldn't fully understand how he did it.
To confirm his suspicion, Dumbledore checked the Hogwarts Book of Admission. Steve Roger, born 15 May 1985. Everything seemed normal but that was what made Dumbledore more suspicious. Something felt wrong yet the book didn't react at all. No false record, no charm interference and how could this book being charmed, it is inside Hogwarts.
He frowned the entire time, while tapping his finger on the table.
"Why do I feel this boy managed to trick me?" he muttered quietly.
So he called Minerva and Snape to go outside of Hogwarts, he plan to visit the boy again.
Minerva and Snape arrived soon after. Minerva looked worried while Snape looked annoyed as usual.
"Albus, you called us early in the morning. What happen?" Minerva asked.
"The boy," Dumbledore replied simply.
Snape raised an eyebrow. "What boy? Is something happen yesterday?"
"Yes. There is 10 years old boy who manage to use magic and defend himself from eight death eater," Dumbledore said.
He told them everything he saw, including the fact that Legilimency show no problem with the boy. Snape expression changed immediately while Minerva gasped slightly.
"Albus you use legilimens on a kid," Minerva face changed and she looked angry.
"I was forced to, the boy is suspicious," Dumbledore defended himself.
"So… what do we do?" Minerva asked.
"We will visit the orphanage," Dumbledore answered. "I want to meet the boy again. I feel something is hidden and I need to find out what really happen."
Snape nodded slowly while Minerva followed behind Dumbledore, they left Hogwarts together.
Luckily Dumbledore had taken the boy address from the files yesterday. So early in the morning, he brought together Minerva and Snape, they Apparated near the orphanage with McGonagall and Snape following behind him. The moment they reached the small building, they immediately saw Amelia Bones already standing there with several Aurors. Kingsley Shacklebolt was beside her, looking just as serious.
'It seemed they also wished to question the boy again,' thought Dumbledore.
"Amelia, Kingsley, good morning," greeted Dumbledore calmly.
All eyes shifted toward him. Amelia looked surprised, Kingsley raised his eyebrows a little, and the Aurors straightened themselves when seeing the famous Professores, Professor Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall, and Professor Snape.
"Good morning, Headmaster. Professors," replied Amelia with a polite tone.
"Yes, good morning," said Dumbledore.
"Good morning," added McGonagall with a small smile.
Snape simply gave a short nod, his eyes already scanning the building feel lazy wanted to interact with them.
Dumbledore looked around before asking, "How long have you been here?"
"Around five minutes," replied Amelia.
"Why haven't you entered?" he asked calmly.
Kingsley answered first. "We felt it would be inappropriate to question the child again. He already drank Veritaserum yesterday and he demonstrated enough magic. Forcing him again might cause trauma or negative thing."
Amelia nodded. "Yes. Even if he looks calm, he is still a child and after reviewing the report we feel conflicted to enter or not, but because his magic is far beyond anything we have seen from anyone underage, so we don't know either to check him or not."
Dumbledore thought for a moment. He understood their hesitation. Steve already showed overwhelming power, enough to cripple eight Death Eaters. Interrogating a child like that felt wrong but something must be done.
"We do not need to question him anymore," said Dumbledore gently. "Instead, we should observe how he lives. That will tell us more than another interrogation."
Kingsley agreed quickly. "That sounds reasonable. The boy is dangerous due to his magic, but we shouldn't treat him like a criminal."
Amelia sighed. "Yes, you are right."
Snape expression shifted slightly.
"Let us go inside," Dumbledore said.
The group approached the door, and Dumbledore knocked gently. A few seconds later, the Matron opened it. Her expression shifted instantly when she saw who was standing outside, which he didn't recognize and first time seeing them.
Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Amelia Bones, Kingsley decided to meet the boy and the aurors just become a guard and didn't enter the orphanage
"O–Oh dear… what is happening?" she asked nervously.
"Good morning," Dumbledore greeted kindly. "We would like to speak with Steve Roger, and also speak with you, if that is alright."
The Matron hesitated. She clearly cared about Steve because steve is the most close among the child here.
"Is… is he in trouble?" she asked.
"No," Amelia said, stepping forward. "We only wish to understand his situation. He is not at fault and I am Headmaster Dumbledore and we wanted to offer scholarship to him."
The Matron finally relaxed a bit after hearing the word scholarship. "Alright… please come in."
The moment they stepped inside, all three professors instinctively scanned the room. The orphanage was simple, old, and a bit worn-out, but clean. Dumbledore quietly observed every detail. Snape looked at the hallway and the corners, trying to sense any unusual magic. McGonagall softened when she saw small drawings and toys scattered neatly on a shelf.
Even Amelia and Kingsley also did the same.
This was not the environment where dark wizards were born. This place felt warm.
"Where is the boy now?" Kingsley asked.
"He woke up a few minutes ago. He's in the kitchen eating breakfast," answered the Matron.
Dumbledore exchanged a glance with Amelia.
This meeting would decide everything whether Steve Roger would be treated as a threat, a prodigy, or something far more complicated.
