I held her, letting the silence stretch between us, trying to be patient as she leaned into me, her body relaxing just a little. Raven didn't speak much, but the way her body softened against mine said more than words could ever express. I could feel the tension in her shoulders slowly unravel, and I wanted to make that feeling last forever—make her feel safe, protected.
But I knew it wouldn't last. Nothing ever did.
The scent of her—a delicate mix of sweet and wild, tinged with something more vulnerable—made my wolf restless. It was almost too much to handle, especially now that I was so close to her. My heartbeat quickened, and I tried to control the surge of instinct that had been building up ever since I got here.
