Chapter 273: Multiple Soul Revenants
The weather at Spinner's End was perpetually gloomy, and the summer clouds were always temperamental.
As the torrential rain hammered against the roof, Sean was still grappling with a difficult problem.
He had not yet fully mastered his Animagus transformation.
This was evident not only in the lack of progress on his system panel but also in his physical struggle to revert to his Kneazle form.
After all, the Animagus transformation was traditionally limited to non-magical creatures. Transforming into a magical beast—such as a phoenix, dragon, or hippogriff—brought about unpredictable and dangerous consequences.
For Sean, this consequence manifested as an extreme difficulty in switching forms. It was a struggle to turn into a Kneazle, and just as much of a struggle to turn back into a wizard.
After several failed attempts, Sean silently retrieved a "Kneazle Biscuit" from his pouch.
sometimes, a wizard just needed a little external assistance.
Soon, a black cat with slightly uncoordinated limbs appeared against the wall of books. It walked with a wobble, looking for all the world as if it were drunk.
The firelight from the hearth cast a dim, amber glow over its fur. Snape, sitting by the fire, noticed the creature's unsteady gait and slowly raised his newspaper to hide the smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
For nearly a week, Sean had been trying to switch forms fluidly.
Sometimes, he would remain in his Kneazle form for days at a time to improve his mastery over the feline body. He would leap across bookshelves or stand by the door, using his whiskers to sense humidity and temperature, trying to predict the weather like a true animal.
"It will be sunny tomorrow," the black cat announced as it leaped into the air, twisting and shifting until it landed as a tall wizard in black robes.
On the sofa, Snape let out an involuntary, cold chuckle from behind his copy of The Daily Prophet. He flicked his wand, and the potion ingredients drying on the balcony were instantly summoned inside.
After all, a certain black cat had successfully predicted the weather incorrectly for seven days in a row.
In a way, that level of consistency was an achievement in itself.
Sean, however, was confident that this time he would succeed. He had just heard the chime of the System.
[Alert: You have grasped a special aspect of Soul Transfiguration. Master-level Proficiency +100]
[A special form has been unlocked. Please inspect.]
Sean was pleasantly surprised. Since his Transfiguration reached the Master level, grinding proficiency had been a slow crawl, gaining only one or three points at a time. To suddenly gain a hundred points... he opened the panel with eager anticipation.
[Transfiguration Categories]
Material Transfiguration: Novice (10/300)
Magical Transfiguration: Novice (30/300)
Soul Transfiguration: Apprentice (60/90)
[Evaluation: A wizard who has just stepped into the Master realm of Transfiguration. Among Masters, your combat rating is a solid 5.]
Ignoring the evaluation of his combat prowess, Sean focused on the finally unlocked Soul Transfiguration.
He slowly extended his hand. In an instant, it morphed into a cat's paw. Simultaneously, his entire body shifted effortlessly into that of a black cat.
—Without the aid of a Kneazle Biscuit.
The black cat stood on the floor, looking thoughtfully at a specific spot in the air where the text hovered.
[Name: Sean Green]
[Unlocked Special Form: Kneazle]
[Unlocked: Unknown]
Unlocked: Unknown?
Do I have more than one Soul Revenant?
The subtle wording made Sean's imagination run wild.
As the end of July arrived, bringing with it the golden sunshine unique to high summer, Sean returned to Hogwarts Castle.
There were no students in the castle, but most of the professors remained in residence.
Silence became the defining feature of the school during the holidays, allowing Sean to organize his plans in peace.
The next goal: Basilisk Biscuits.
To achieve this, Sean needed the ability to withstand a Basilisk, and he needed to further improve the magical ritual of the Fairy Tale Biscuits to ensure the user remained sane.
A controllable Basilisk was a weapon; an uncontrollable one was a disaster waiting to happen.
His constantly improving Transfiguration skills would help with the former, while Soul Transfiguration offered hope for the latter.
Sean needed to complete this plan before the Basilisk harmed anyone—the sooner, the better.
Therefore, on his very first day back at the castle, Sean went straight to the Alchemy office to find Professor Terra.
"It is a joy to see you, my dear apprentice. Have you completed the Animagus transformation?"
Professor Terra noticed immediately that the Blunt Brooch was missing from his chest, and she spoke with a faint, pleased smile.
"Yes, Professor. But I have some questions," Sean said.
"Is the transformation not fluid? Are the animal instincts too overwhelming? Or perhaps you cannot transform without your wand?" Terra asked, sounding very experienced. "My apprentice, these are all very normal phenomena."
"Right, Professor. But... what if the Animagus form is a magical creature?" Sean asked carefully.
"A magical creature... A magical creature?!"
Professor Terra leaned in abruptly, her voice raspy with shock. "Let me see..."
After a long inspection, the fiery light in Professor Terra's eyes could no longer be concealed.
She sent a white paper airplane zooming out of the room, then turned back to him, her tone trembling slightly.
"I should have known... to master it so quickly... Did you enter the Dream? Tell me, what did you see?"
Understanding the meaning of the "Dream" was one of Sean's objectives. He spoke slowly, choosing his words with care.
"I saw some blurry shadows, a black Kneazle, and a great deal of mist. Later... I became the Kneazle I saw..."
He described the experience as accurately as he could.
"Good. Very good. You have already entered one of your Soul Revenants within the Dream. As for the place you visited... that is the most wondrous place of all."
Terra's voice took on a mystical quality.
"Listen to me, child. Even the wizards of Uagadou do not fully understand that world. It is a place where time does not flow. It is merely a state of existence—a flat, empty void.
"Very few wizards can enter there. It is the world behind the Death Veil, the place where wizarding souls reside.
"Normally, a wizard only has the chance to go there after death. If they are unwilling to greet death, they become ghosts. If they accept it, they embark on the next great adventure.
"However, wizards who practice Soul Transfiguration can peek into a tiny corner of that world. This grants them unique powers. For example, the ability to maintain a clear human mind after transforming, or the ability to rapidly master the essence of self-transfiguration."
Professor Terra explained everything in detail.
Sean's Quick-Quotes Quill scratched furiously across the parchment, recording every word the Professor said.
"To enter that place—even just a corner of it—is no easy task. It is almost impossible for a standard Animagus transformation to achieve it."
Her gaze was intense, placing heavy emphasis on the word "standard."
"But its benefits are immense. So, my apprentice... have you deduced the method used by the wizards of Uagadou?"
