The screen of my phone lit on and the notification sound rang. My eyes scanned the message. Finally, it was time.
I stood up and headed to my closet. I got dressed in a black khaki trousers, a white top and a black leather jacket over it. I slid my fingers in my hair. It was a habit to calm the nervousness that raked me from within.
I opened my door and crept out. I headed for the stairs, bending down slightly to see if my mother had fallen asleep in the lounge.
I was correct. I saw her chest rising and falling slowly. My lips pursed as I took very careful light steps down the stairs, towards the door.
She stirred in her sleep and I paused, my heart beating loudly in my chest.
Once she stopped moving, I breathed out softly in relief. I continued, walking on my tiptoes till I got to the door. I opened it with care and then slipped out into the cold night.
