I didn't expect it to hurt, but it did.
The words had barely left my lips when the room changed, and it felt like oxygen had been taken out. I fell to the ground, gasping for air.
From the corner of my eyes, I see Hansel's body jerk and then the sound ripped through him. It was guttural and echoing and so full of pain it tore through my chest and lodged inside me.
His head whipped back, muscles bulging as the veins along his arms and neck turned a shade too dark. We had forgotten to arrange the chains that I'd slipped off Hansel's body back to its original position, so it was still on the ground, blocking the path of the Raze.
And I, I was frozen.
My feet refused to move, and my lips trembled. This was not the first time I'd seen Hansel's Raze, but those times, I'd been in awe; right now, I was afraid it would hurt me, because that's what it felt like.
"Hansel?" I whispered, even though I already knew he wasn't here anymore.
