Chapter 42 - Signs of the past

Celine saw a shadow along the side of the road. It wasn't clear, but it was imitating her.

Lilia felt the same sensation: as if her shadow were separating from her, like a living memory of the Gate.

_"They're here," Celine said calmly, as though she understood where it had come from.

Lilia nodded:

_"They aren't enemies… but they aren't us either."

The Third Consciousness chose this moment to appear, a small voice whispering inside the minds of the two girls:

_"You have learned what you needed to learn. Every step will remind you of what you missed, and of what has yet to be completed."

Then, suddenly, a faint trace of the city appeared.

On the trunk of a tree. On a stone. Even in the reflection of the water.

It wasn't the city itself, yet something seemed to tell them:

_"Remember. Even if you leave, we are always here."

There was no clear explanation for what was happening. The city was supposed to have disappeared, yet it did not seem that simple anymore. As they moved forward, they heard a distant sound.

A human voice. Familiar… yet different.

Selene's heart tightened.

Lilia felt an inexplicable tension.

From among the shadows, someone appeared.

Not Marcus, and not anyone from their immediate past. Instead, a new key: someone who possessed information about the city and the Gate… and perhaps about them as well.

The Third Consciousness seemed to breathe with them, sharing the same sense of anticipation.

_"The next phase begins now… and no one can fully predict it."

The stranger smiled a mysterious smile:

_"I suppose you'd like to know what happened to the city after you left it… when it began to fade away, wouldn't you?"

Celine looked at Lilia, then at the Third Consciousness.

Lilia whispered:

_"At last… the truth will begin to unfold."

And the journey… was no longer about leaving the city.

It had become about understanding what remained of it within them, within the world, and within every step that lay ahead.

The mysterious figure stood at the edge of the road, his shadow flowing with the fading light.

Lilia felt a strange sense of awe, as if part of him were familiar… not from her life, but from the memories of the city itself.

He spoke in a calm voice:

_"The city was never completely sealed. What you saw was only the beginning… and there are those who remained inside, waiting for someone who understands."

Gently, Celine squeezed Lilia's hand.

The mysterious person took out something small. It looked like a map, yet it was not an ordinary one.

_"If you want to know the truth, you must follow this… It will not be easy, and it will not be without danger."

They followed the path the stranger indicated and soon found themselves before a second Gate. It was smaller and less radiant, yet it carried the same distinctive energy as the first one.

Lilia approached it cautiously. A sharp sensation touched her mind, as if the Third Consciousness were speaking again.

_"This Gate does not only open places… it opens the mind."

Celine noticed reflections across the metal surface of the Gate. Images of the city's memories appeared there, but distorted, as though nothing had fully settled yet.

The mysterious person said:

_"Through it, you can see what you have not seen. But be careful. Not every vision is real, and some of them… are meant to test you."

Lilia felt her heart racing, while Celine felt as if the city were breathing once more.

The Third Consciousness did not leave them. Instead, it became part of every step they took, observing their reactions and guiding them carefully.

They had already passed beyond the former city and returned to the real world.

And yet… something inside them kept urging them to enter this particular Gate, no matter what might be waiting for them inside.

When they stepped through the Gate, the ground vanished beneath their feet, and they found themselves in a dim, almost dark space filled with reflections.

Each reflection represented a fragment of the city. A fragment of the past. Perhaps even a fragment of themselves.

Lilia looked at her reflection:

_"Is this… me? Or something else?"

Celine whispered:

"Everything here could be real… or it could be a test."

At that moment, semi-transparent beings appeared. They resembled guardians, wavering between light and shadow.

Lilia felt a strange fear, yet something inside her told her:

_"Don't run… this is part of you."

Selene held her hand tightly, and the Third Consciousness whispered again:

_"These are not threats… they are messages. Each one carries a piece of the past, and a lesson for your future."

The guardians began to move, but instead of attacking them, they returned their memories to them distorted, mixed with the city itself as if everything were testing their ability to understand and become aware.

Among the reflections of the guardians, a massive building appeared. Half of it was shattered, while the other half pulsed with life.

Lilia said:

_"This building… I felt its presence before… but I've never seen it like this."

Selene noticed something moving inside the building. The shadow of a person… or something familiar, yet unclear.

The mysterious figure said:

_"Whoever faces the truth will find the key. And whoever ignores it… will remain trapped within the shadows."

To be continued...
