"Charles…"
Charles shook his head slowly. "Congratulations," he said flatly. "Things are looking up for you."
"They are," Vivienne replied smoothly. "And for Crestwood too, whether you choose to see it or not." She folded her hands in front of her. "I didn't blackmail anyone. Claudia simply thought I would be in the best position to carry on. The woman needs a break. First carrying her husband's legacy, and now her son's burden." She sighed. "It's a lot for one woman."
Charles let out a dry laugh. "I know one thing as clear as day," he said. "We are doomed."
Vivienne's smile faltered. "Charles… why do you always think the worst of me?"
"Because you've earned it," he replied without hesitation. "You've managed to outdo your own manipulations time and time again. That takes talent."
"I have only ever protected Delilah," Vivienne said sharply now, the softness slipping. "Every move I've made has been for her."
