Kelsey hadn't even had time to process what was happening before the man snatched her phone, found the text message, and immediately dialed the number back.
Before Kelsey could even try to stop him, he put a finger to his lips in a "shhh" gesture and gently pushed her hand away.
He put the phone on speaker.
"Who is this? Why are you texting Kaitlyn in the middle of the night?" he said into the phone, his voice dripping with provocation and a clear, challenging tone.
Kelsey's eyebrows furrowed with worry.
Not because she cared if Rhett misunderstood, but because she was terrified of angering him.
She had started this fake dating thing to get him to leave her alone, and she knew he would find out eventually.
She just hadn't expected this man to be so bold and direct. She was scared he might push Rhett too far.
After all, Rhett was crazy. And capable of absolutely anything.
