Chapter 96 - Chapter 96: Connected to the Dragon God

"So this means… their journey to find the Dragon Balls has finally reached its last stage?"

Gran muttered to himself, suddenly lifting his head.

Sure enough

The sky was already growing dim. Just a little longer, and a full moon would rise over the earth… and Son Goku would transform into an Oozaru.

"Lord Beerus, let's go find a certain girl. She definitely knows where the West City food district is!"

Gran grabbed Beerus and Whis before either could react, then vanished with Instant Transmission.

Earth — Western Hemisphere

At the top floor of a castle, Gran and the two gods appeared with a faint sound.

The sky had completely darkened, and a massive green dragon spiraled overhead.

Just as he expected—this scene was the climax of the early Dragon Ball storyline. Gran felt a surge of excitement. Good thing he didn't miss it.

Beerus glanced up at the dragon… then immediately looked down again.

"You said there's a girl who knows where to find this food street. So… where is she?"

He wasn't the least bit interested in the dragon. The girl who knew where to find food—that was the important part.

"Don't worry. She'll show up any moment now."

Gran scanned the castle. The girl he referred to was Bulma.

Bulma was the daughter of Earth's richest family and a native of West City. She absolutely knew her way around food districts.

He only needed her to lead them there.

But with one look around, he realized she wasn't outside. She must've been locked up by Pilaf.

Suddenly

"Your wish has been granted."

The deep voice of the dragon echoed, and a pair of white girl's panties drifted down from the sky, landing right on the snout of a pig-headed man.

The entire world seemed to freeze.

Even Beerus and Whis went silent.

Gran burst out laughing, clutching his stomach.

Finally—he got to see this legendary scene in person!

"In this world, someone actually wished for that? Their brain must be full of holes."

Beerus' tone was flat.

Ridiculous wish or not, as a god, he was already far beyond worldly concerns—except for food.

Whis chuckled softly. "Wish-orbs are inherently objects that violate nature. Every time the dragon is summoned, a price is paid. For someone to waste a wish like this… it really is a pity."

A price?

Gran blinked. He immediately thought of the Shadow Dragons.

"Whis, I've summoned the dragon before. I didn't seem to pay any price."

"Did you really think there's such a thing as a free lunch?" Beerus shot him a sideways glance.

"There is!"

"??"

"Lord Beerus, every time you go out to eat, you never pay. Isn't that eating for free?"

"..."

Beerus felt his fist clench on instinct.

Before a fight could break out, Whis quickly interjected:

"Gran, these wish-orbs seem free, but when they grant wishes, they absorb negative energy from mortals. If that energy accumulates to a certain point, the consequences could be… severe."

So it was about the Shadow Dragons.

Gran nodded. "If they're that dangerous, then why don't gods just get rid of them?"

"Why destroy them?" Beerus shook his head. "As that old fool in the Supreme Kai Realm says, everything in existence has its purpose."

"Wish-orbs violate natural law, yes—but they also guide the advancement of civilizations."

Collecting Dragon Balls often sparks conflict, and civilizations often grow through conflict.

And if the wish is for knowledge, technology, power… all these directly push civilizations forward.

"Gran, they're a double-edged sword."

Whis lifted his staff. "As long as they're used with moderation, they won't necessarily bring catastrophe."

"I see."

Gran knew the dragon couldn't be summoned too often—the orbs needed time to purge the negativity.

"So where's this girl you were talking about?" Beerus was losing his patience.

"Lord Beerus, can I ask one more question?"

"Hurry up and spit it out!"

"How exactly were these wish-orbs created?"

Beerus and Whis both fell silent.

After a long pause

"They're all connected to the Dragon God, Zalama."

Beerus' voice grew cold. "Enough questions. When your power reaches a sufficient level, you'll naturally learn the truth."

Gran didn't dare ask further.

Time continued passing. The sky darkened until a full moon finally rose.

Beerus was seconds away from exploding

Suddenly

A faint surge burst from inside the castle. The next moment, a massive great ape smashed its way out.

"There he is!"

Gran's eyes lit up. This was the most iconic version of Son Goku—primitive, wild, overflowing with potential.

The ape's power was very weak, though.

He estimated Goku's power level as an Oozaru to be a little over 200.

And since Oozaru multiplies power by 10… Goku's base power must be barely over 20.

Which made sense—when Goku left Mount Paozu, his battle power was only about 10.

"Hmm? There's a Saiyan on this planet?"

Beerus glanced at Gran, his tone meaningful.

"So you didn't come here just to find this food-knowing girl after all."

Whis also looked his way, though he said nothing.

"Yeah."

Gran nodded without hiding it. "Before Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta, one of my clansmen was exiled to this world."
