Chapter 31 - We're Under Attack

The sharp edges of the blade came down with a SHREEK! sound, splitting the mechanical bee into two and sending it crashing onto the ground and blasting, vaporizing into smoke.

With a closed eye, Kai's arms moved, paddling and slicing all the bees approaching him without moving a step, and making smoke circle around him while the daggers continued moving like a speeding fan of a nuclear turbine.

Within two minutes, the number of blasted bees around him seemed like the sand in a jar, and still kept on increasing, slamming more. The speed at which Kai moved shocked everyone, including Lieutenant Wang, who had his eyes locked on him.

Though Lieutenant Wang's eyes were fixed on the boy, but still saw the other soldiers sweating and throwing their swords and spears harshly against the bees, hoping to be in line with Kai.

After an endless two hours, smoke fogged the hall, clouding their eyes so much it became hard to locate and slay the bees, but Kai remained the only one standing, still slamming them down without caring about the smoke.

Pee….!

A whistling sound erupted, sending the remaining mechanical bees back and into the raised parts of the walls. Little by little, the smoke began to vanish as cooling air gushed from the ceiling and on the wall, pushing the smoke out through the vents.

When the air in the room cleared, Oin, Mike, and Jinx threw themselves on the ground, clutching their shoulders. Countless others remained in the same posture, coughing and bleeding heavily. Three of the soldiers remained there, wounded badly and unmoving.

Kai stood there, sweat dripping from his face as he slowly sat on the ground, placing his hand on the green line, and steadying his breathing.

"Thank you, my child," one of the old women Lily escorted said, placing a hand on Lily's shoulder for a brief second before joining the women moving toward the light pole and vanished with them after reaching the crowd.

Lily turned, her sword swinging freely beside her waist, and walked toward the direction of the city's gate, whistling and walking normally on the road struck with sudden silence until she saw blood spilled tracing from where she stood to the other side of the wall.

'What is that?' she thought, increasing her steps and later leaning on the wall when she reached it, tilted her head slightly, and scanned around.

Surprisingly, she saw a huge cart that wasn't there at first, blocking her from seeing whatever was taking place on the other side, but widened her eyes when she spotted the bloodied line leading to a pool of blood beneath the cart prevented her from seeing the other side and seeing the blood spills, her expression changed.

The moment she crawled under the cart and straightened herself on the other side, sweat beaded her forcefully, wetting her hands and dripping on the handle of the sword, seeing the shattered bodies of both her mates and the civilians.

"WHAT?!" she said, shouting and crawling backward the moment she saw a man wearing a blast suit descending from a moving van and chasing after her.

Stumbling countless times and hitting her body on the hard road, Lily managed to escape, doubling the gap between her and the man, and managed to reach the valley leading to the barracks before him.

Without knowing how to completely escape from the clear straight road, she opened the smelly green trash bin, jumped inside, and placed a hand on her mouth, steadying her breath.

A few seconds after closing the trash bin and stopping her breath, footsteps echoed in the valley, followed by a metal screeching sound that sent goosebumps on her skin.

"Shit!" Denis said, slamming the huge sword at the green trash bin before turning and facing it after not hearing an empty trash bin sound.

He moved two steps forward, nearing the bin, but stopped and clutched his palms around his nose and mouth, coughing heavily.

"WTF! Don't they have cleaners?" he said, stepping away from the bin and rushing back to the entrance and joining the van from which he had alighted.

Lily, whose face turned slightly reddish, cracked her eyes open, opened the cover of the bin, and jumped out, coughing heavily. Though she had hid herself in it, but rejected ever choosing that as a spot and continued throwing insults as she walked toward the barracks wall, spitting.

"Did you catch her?" Kang said, turning toward Denis, who kept on slamming his fist on the dashboard.

"Hey… hey… hey… behave yourself, after all, leaving one person alive will send them a serious warning," he said, sparking the engine and stepping on the accelerator.

Denis didn't say a word, but looked at Kang in a strange expression as if Kang's face had now turned to that of the girl he chased. When they moved past the road at the side of the children's park, only black birds circled the trees and the road, but dashed out of the road as the van neared them.

Denis's expression turned into a grim smile, spotting a bloodied, torn shirt hanging freely on the branch of the tree.

"What you said earlier is true; they won't dare come after us when they witness the remains I left at the entrance."

"Huh… I now feel okay and think I can join Wang and the other soldiers," Gray said, moving out of the shower and putting on his uniform. He opened the door, locked it, and began walking toward the building the soldiers were in, but stopped, spotting someone speeding toward him.

"Lieutenant… lieutenant… Sir," Lily cried out, spotting Gray standing at a far distance, and speeding toward him.

Gray's expression changed, but still maintained a genuine stance as he welcomed and calmed the lady. He placed a hand on her shoulder but removed it instantly after smelling the heavy scent on her.

"Sir… the entrance… the guards… they," Lily said, her voice breaking mid-sentence and coughing profusely as she bent down, gasping for air.

"Take your time, breathe, then tell me what you want to say."

"Sir… we're under… attack!"

"Where?" Gray said, his face tensing as he clenched his hand into a fist.

"The entrance… the guards… the travelers… everyone… is… dead."

"Take me there." Lieutenant Gray said, taking a step forward and moving past Lily before she could even answer.

They moved out of the barracks and walked straight toward the city's entrance.

Reaching the valley at which Lily had stopped earlier, Gray's eyes widened as he spotted a huge sword print on the trash bins, but turned his gaze from it and continued forward.

Wind blew on the dismantled parts of the bodies split apart, sending small insects flying in and out of the open wounds with clotted blood stains as vultures circled above the wall before diving toward the ground and tearing the skin apart.

One after another, they scattered around the bloodied ground, purging and opening the skin wider, and stretching the skin in their beaks as if it were a rubber band.
