From the stage, the second speaker continued his address, his voice measured and practiced, but Adrian had long since stopped listening.
His attention was elsewhere. Every instinct in his body remained alert.
Adrian leaned slightly toward Stella in his seat, his eyes scanning the hall like a predator surveying unfamiliar territory.
"You should leave."
Stella turned her head slowly. "Leave?"
"And it had to be now."
His voice was low, controlled, but the firmness of it was clear. "I want you out of this building, I doubt they would play by the rules."
Stella studied him carefully. Long before his arrival she had made that decision to leave earlier…but never thought it would get to the point where she wouldn't get to see him speak.
"I know this summit is quite…" she began.
"Babe, I have the feeling that their movement isn't as simple as we see it."
"So we take precaution for you to leave earlier…."
"And what about you?"
