Chapter 24 - The Look That Hurts

The conversation didn't wait for a polite moment. It didn't even pretend to. It snapped into place the instant Liera shut the door behind them, the sound barely fading before Varon's voice pushed into the quiet hallway. This part of the manor was tucked away, the far end of the guest wing where Verona's room sat like a lonely island. There was no way anyone passed this way. If someone walked in here, they would know instantly. And maybe that was exactly what he wanted, a place where he could dig for answers without witnesses.

"What do you want?" Liera said, not bothering to hide her irritation. Her arms crossed over her chest.

Varon moved a bit closer, enough that his shadow dragged over the carpet between them. "Her power," he said. "Tell me what you know."

Liera blinked once, slowly. "You were there," she replied. "When Father interrogated me. Is there something wrong with your hearing? Or were you too busy glaring holes into the floor to listen properly?"
