Chapter 65 - Three Shadows Over Kusanagi

"Where many paths converge, only one departs with the blade."

Arrival of Three Armies

Location: Outskirts of Nara - Pre-Dawn

A convoy of black SUVs glided silently along the final service road leading to Nara. The vehicles moved in unison, akin to a singular organism. Engines muted, windows heavily tinted, each vehicle perfectly spaced. They moved with a singular purpose.

The convoy slowed and came to a synchronized halt.

Doors swung open.

Ahas ng mga Lakan operatives were the first to emerge, rifles at the ready. Their weapons, adorned with faint glyph patterns, clicked into place as magazines were secured with practiced precision.

Alongside them, Orochi Enforcers activated their myth-tech suits. Segmented armor sealed around them, visors lowered, blades sheathed, and power cores hummed as their systems synchronized.

At the forefront stood Shinken Amakiri, silent and composed, one hand resting near the hilt of his sheathed Masamune.

To the side, warriors of the Fang of the Naga emerged, drawing their curved relic blades. Its edges pulsating with a thin layer of void venom. Each step was deliberate, each stance carefully controlled.

From the lead SUV, Raja stepped out.

He surveyed the narrow district ahead: side streets, towering rooftops, and distant shrine silhouettes. His presence alone commanded the coalition into motion, requiring no words.

Natalia approached the nearest SUV and pressed a compact tactical scanner against its roof. A pulse of soft light swept outward, mapping the terrain.

After a brief three seconds, she reported, "Three open lanes. Surveillance is minimal. We'll proceed through the blind arc."

Raja nodded in acknowledgment.

Shinken raised two fingers, prompting the Orochi Enforcers to break formation. Some fluidly climbing rooftops while others slipped into alleyways with military precision.

From the rear vehicles, Phaya Khamdee led his Fang warriors toward the river flank, retrieving breaching packs and rope kits from the trunks.

Then, Putik stepped forward.

He knelt by the reinforced gate obstructing their advance. Without hesitation, he unclipped the Balisong ng Dahas from his waist and flipped it into a reverse grip.

No theatrics. No flourish. Just a soldier focused on the task at hand.

He positioned the blade precisely where the gate met the concrete, directly over the buried anchor bolts.

With controlled force, he drove the blade in.

A muted crack reverberated beneath the surface.

Shifting slightly, he repeated the motion. Each strike deliberate. Each fracture immaculate. One by one, the anchor bolts snapped, stress radiating outward through the base.

The gate loosened with a low groan.

Two Ahas operatives advanced, quietly pushing the gate down and lowering it to the pavement without a sound.

The path was clear.

Next, Maximo Imperial raised the Sumpit ni Dumalapdap and unleashed a focused sonic burst, instantly shattering a hidden detection node beneath a streetlight.

Raja began to walk forward.

Behind him, the coalition organized into three advancing formations:

• Ahas warriors tightening their rifle configurations

• Orochi operatives sweeping across rooftops and alleyways

• Fang warriors advancing along the river flank with smooth, disciplined strides

The SUVs were switched off and left behind, their engines fading into silence.

Raja finally spoke.

"No delays. Kusanagi lies ahead."

Shinken dipped his head in acknowledgment.

Phaya Khamdee signaled to his fighters.

The coalition surged forward - quiet, heavy, and inevitable. The blade awaited.

Border of Storms

Location: Open Pacific - Approaching Japanese Maritime Boundary

As the Balanghay navigated the final stretch toward Japan, the fog thickened, enveloping the vessel in a muted gray light before dawn had fully broken. The deck of the ancient ship remained eerily calm - too calm for the tumult that lay ahead.

The Babaylan Saints stood poised.

Juan Luciano, positioned at the bow, held the Habagat ni Silang (Typhoon Glass Trident) loosely in his hand. The wind swirled around him in faint spirals, brushing against his cloak and tugging at the edges of the ship's banners. It was not yet a storm, but the sea was already attuned to the impending disturbance.

Behind him, Hermano Lopez scanned the growing distortions in the air, sensing the rising spiritual resistance that characterized Japan's outer boundary.

Magdalena Ramos closed her eyes momentarily, sifting through the subtle illusions drifting across the maritime expanse. Decoys, mirages, veiled movements. She whispered a single word:

"Interference."

Mia Torre opened the Aklat ng Katotohanan, its pages turning without the aid of wind. Patterns emerged with threads of cause and effect converging toward a singular point.

"Convergence," she murmured.

Crispulo Toledo knelt at the edge of the deck, his form dimming slightly as shadows lengthened. He analyzed the angles, movement, aggression, trajectory.

"Ships," he stated quietly.

"Many."

Then, the fog began to dissipate.

The Japanese Maritime Defense Force materialized like a formidable wall of steel.

A line of destroyers stretched across the horizon, with cruisers looming behind, their weapon systems primed for engagement. Missile frigates flanked them, effectively sealing off every escape route.

Dozens of vessels formed a sea fortress. A barrier designed to keep divine beings at bay.

Radio warnings crackled across open channels, sharp and urgent:

"Unidentified fleet, turn back immediately."

"You are entering restricted territory."

"Withdraw or face fire upon your vessels."

The wind shifted.

Hermano Lopez exhaled softly and spoke a single name.

"Juan."

Juan stepped forward.

The sea hushed.

He raised the Typhoon Trident slightly. An almost imperceptible gesture, yet the sky complied. Winds converged into spirals and clouds folded inward like a massive lung preparing to inhale.

Hermano did not raise his voice; he merely said:

"Clear our path."

Juan nodded.

His foot touched the rail.

CUT.

───────────────────────────

AFTERMATH

The fog dissipated entirely.

Silence reigned.

The Japanese fleet once an imposing wall of metal had vanished.

What remained floated in a state of ruin:

• A destroyer cleaved in two.

• Another vessel crumpled inward as if gripped by a giant hand.

• A cruiser burned silently, smoke rising in thin spirals.

• Fragments of missile batteries drifted like broken teeth.

• Deck plates lay twisted, contorted by an unimaginable force.

• The sea itself trembled in slow, collapsing rings.

Beneath that trembling surface, moving with the calm certainty of an ancient truth,

the silhouette of the Bakunawa glided.

A colossal, coiled form.

As long as a city block.

Silent.

Never breaking the surface.

Never revealing more than shadow and intention.

The ocean bowed to its passage.

Juan Luciano walked across the water as if stepping onto polished stone.

Lightning webs still flickered above him, fading thread by thread.

The wind parted gently around his path.

He reached the Balanghay's lowered ramp and stepped aboard without uttering a word.

The Saints fell silent.

Juan lowered his trident and bowed his head slightly.

"Hermano. The blockade has been lifted."

Hermano Lopez placed a firm hand on Juan's shoulder - grateful and resolute.

"Your strength guides our path today, Juan. You honor us."

Juan straightened.

"We set our course for the blade."

Hermano raised his hand, signaling the fleet forward.

The Balanghay resumed its journey toward Japan's shores, cutting through the shattered remnants of a naval armada.

Inland — Ahas Coalition Reaction

Location: Forest Approaches to Nara

A shockwave rippled across the land. Subtle at first, then unmistakable.

Dust billowed from the road.

Leaves trembled on their branches.

A profound pressure settled in the chest, reminiscent of distant thunder.

Raja halted mid-stride.

Shinken Amakiri paused simultaneously, narrowing his eyes as he turned toward the sea.

Phaya Khamdee sensed the tremor even along the river path.

No one spoke. But every warrior felt the same undeniable truth:

A god had acted.

Raja broke the silence.

"Increase speed. The Saints are near."

Shinken nodded once in acknowledgment.

Phaya signaled his unit.

The coalition surged forward with renewed urgency.

Two factions raced toward the same blade. Only one would emerge victorious.

───────────────────────────

The Shrine Prepares for Siege

Location: Nara - Kusanagi Shrine District, Inner Perimeter

The initial warning appeared as a mere flicker.

A surveillance node monitoring the forest path blinked twice before fading into static. Another feed, directed at the old stone bridge, stuttered, froze, and ultimately went dark. By the time the cameras facing the river ceased transmission, the operators in the shrine command hall recognized the ominous pattern.

Someone was tampering with their surveillance.

"Nodes three, six, and eight have stopped transmitting," an officer reported, his voice taut. "There are no system errors. These were disabled manually."

A heavy silence enveloped the chamber. Monitors cast a pale glow throughout the room, illuminating the grave expressions of those tasked with safeguarding Japan's most sacred blade.

The Commander stepped forward.

"Initiate inner-layer activation."

A contingent of shrine engineers sprang into action, their fingers gliding over holographic panels. The walls trembled as, deep beneath the earth, the Kusanagi vault's outer ring awakened. A soft luminescence emanated through the floor patterns. Sigils etched centuries ago now reinforced with modern myth-tech seals.

One engineer swallowed hard.

"The barrier grid is responding… but the resonance field remains unstable."

"Because the blade has sensed the threat," the Commander replied. "Proceed."

In the courtyard beyond, defenders assembled with precision - quiet, disciplined, and resolute. Myth-tech armor locked into place around their shoulders and forearms.

Myth-tech rifles were slung across the fronts of their vests as their primary weapons while rune-etched katanas hung at their sides for close-quarters combat.

Ranged specialists positioned themselves along the rooftops, drawing relic bows already strung with myth-forged arrows.

They were prepared to sacrifice everything.

Each of them understood this reality.

Another alert chimed.

A communication aide rushed into the command hall, breathless.

"Commander… Maritime Command has ceased all transmissions. All channels. The fleet is… gone."

Silence fell over the room.

The Commander's jaw tightened.

"Only one individual possesses the capability to execute such a feat."

A shrine defender exclaimed, "An individual!?"

"Escalate to Level Crimson," the Commander ordered. "Fortify the inner barrier. No one must reach the vault."

The shrine trembled slightly as locking clamps engaged deep beneath the stone. A new layer of light - pale, blue, and crescent-shaped wrapped around the central vault housing Kusanagi.

A nearby monitor suddenly erupted with static before stabilizing, revealing the encroaching threat.

Three streams of movement emerged:

From the forest, the Ahas operatives advancing with rifles raised, exhibiting silent discipline.

From the rooftops, Orochi Enforcers clad in sealed black armor, leaping in synchronized arcs.

From the river flank, Fang of he Naga warriors cutting through the mist, their void-coated blades glowing with lethal intent.

An officer whispered the unspoken truth:

"Three forces… converging."

The Commander remained resolute.

"This is a siege."

He opened a secured channel, dispatching a coded transmission to National HQ.

"Prepare the Alliance liaison. Should these forces breach the inner gate, we will initiate Tier-Three protocol. Japan cannot withstand all fronts alone."

The response was immediate.

"Understood. Stand by."

He stepped into the courtyard, where defenders awaited in tight formation.

The shrine gates closed behind him with a heavy, echoing thud.

Riflemen tightened their lines across the courtyard.

Relic archers drew their bows on the rooftops.

Sword units held their rune-etched katanas low but ready.

Seal specialists knelt along the stair edges, palms pressed to the stone, reinforcing the ward lines.

The Commander positioned himself at the front, katana drawn.

The wind carried distant tremors of footsteps, marching boots, shifting rooftops, and the low rumble of an inevitable collision.

His voice resonated through the courtyard.

"Steel yourselves."

A violent roar erupted behind him - harsh and guttural, shaking the stone beneath their feet.

「ぜんめつさせろ! いっぽも ひかぬ!」

Zenmetsu saserō! Ippo mo hikanu!

("Annihilate them! We will not retreat a single step!")

The shrine reverberated with killing intent. The siege had commenced.

───────────────────────────

Three Fronts Break at Once

Location: Kusanagi Shrine - Outer Defense Ring

The first shot sliced through the morning air.

A shrineman stationed near the forest line jerked back as a round penetrated his chestplate, causing his armor to dent inward. He collapsed silently.

In an instant, the entire forest front erupted in chaos.

Ahas rifle teams advanced in a staggered formation - tight, disciplined, and merciless. Muzzle flashes pulsed between the trees as bullets assaulted stone barricades, shredding paper wards and sending sprays of dirt into the air.

"Return fire!" a defender commanded.

Myth-tech rifles responded in unison. Blue tracer bursts pierced the branches, striking two Ahas operatives squarely in the torso, dropping them instantly. A third operative was struck by an arrow by one of the shrine's relic-forged shafts, piercing through his shoulder and spinning him violently to the ground.

The forest line descended into turmoil.

A defender crouched behind a pillar, firing blindly. A bullet penetrated his helmet, snapping his neck sideways. He collapsed over his rifle.

Two more shrinemen attempted to drag a wounded ally backward, only to be met with a burst of fire that swept through all three.

The forest was rapidly transforming into a killing field.

───────────────────────────

Rooftop Front - Orochi Descend Like Executioners

The first rooftop death occurred in silence.

An Orochi Enforcer landed behind a relic archer, one gloved hand muffling the defender's mouth while the other drove a short blade cleanly through his spine. The archer fell limp, his bow clattering across the tiles.

Another Orochi operative vaulted over a ridge and crashed into a defensive nest. The impact shattered supporting beams, sending two defenders tumbling through the roof in a cascade of splintered wood.

On the opposite rooftop, an archer released a perfectly aimed arrow, piercing an Orochi visor. The operative staggered, momentarily blinded, yet lunged forward regardless, tackling the archer off the rooftop. Both bodies hit the ground with a sickening crunch.

A shrineman screamed as he was disarmed. The Orochi who seized his sword snapped his elbow backward before kicking him off the edge. His body slammed into the courtyard stones with an echo that resonated across the shrine.

The rooftops were collapsing, one platform at a time.

───────────────────────────

River Flank - Fang of the Naga Breach the Line

Along the river, the water rippled from the impact of Fang warriors leaping over the embankment.

They moved low and swiftly, void venom dripping from their curved blades with each droplet sizzling upon contact with stone.

The first defender met them with a katana.

Steel clashed.

The katana shattered.

A Fang warrior sliced through the man's torso, pivoting to sever another defender's arm with a backhand strike. The wounded man fell screaming, but the Fang warrior swiftly ended his suffering with a thrust to the throat before advancing again.

A shrine swordsman managed to parry two strikes and delivered a precise cut, severing a Fang warrior's forearm. Instead of retreating, the Fang warrior lunged one-handed, plunging his blade deep into the swordsman's ribs before collapsing atop him.

Further down the river wall, another defender attempted to block a venom blade with his rifle.

The rifle melted in half.

The subsequent strike opened his chest.

Breaching charges detonated along the stone bank, sending debris flying. Fang rope kits snapped taut as more warriors swung across the gaps, landing directly within defensive pockets and cutting down riflemen at close range.

The river flank was beginning to buckle.

───────────────────────────

Shrine Command - Orders Against a Tide

"Shift rifle squads to support the forest line!" the Commander barked, katana in hand.

"The rooftops are collapsing! We need reinforcements on the northern ridge!"

"Seal the river approach! NOW!"

Voices scrambled across comms - cutting, cracking, or drowned beneath gunfire.

Defenders moved on instinct. Some sprinted, others limped, and some had to be dragged. Blood streaked the courtyard stones as wounded men struggled and failed to stand.

Every order arrived three seconds too late.

Every defender reached his position already under fire.

───────────────────────────

Symbolic Loss

A senior relic archer - the same man who had trained half the current rooftop unit - drew, steadied, and released.

His arrow struck an Orochi Enforcer squarely in the visor.

The operative dropped instantly.

The defenders cheered...

Just long enough for a Fang warrior's thrown blade to embed itself in the archer's throat.

He fell backward, blood gurgling across his robes, bow slipping from his grasp.

The courtyard fell silent for half a second.

Demoralization hit like a physical blow.

───────────────────────────

The Lines Begin to Break

The forest front -

Bending.

Bodies falling.

Ahas riflemen pushing steadily forward through the smoke.

The rooftops -

Crumbling.

Orochi operatives leaping from roof to roof, cutting down archers and slashing through barricades.

The river flank -

Collapsing.

Fang warriors breaching inner positions, cutting defenders down with brutal efficiency.

The Commander surveyed the battlefield.

The blood, the bodies, the smoke, the three converging tides... and grasped the grim reality.

"We cannot hold," he whispered.

His trembling hand reached for the Tier-Three authorization sigil.

The defenders around him braced for the next wave.

Three armies were inside their walls. And the blade had yet to be drawn.
