Chapter 272 - Chapter-272 Planted

The Golden Gate Bridge groaned under the weight of chaos. Steel cables vibrated violently, groaning like the ribs of some massive beast. The crack above still pulsed, veins of distorted light stretching across the clouds as more demons poured through, eager to spill into San Francisco. Veilspawn teleported in jagged bursts across the span, Cranium Leechers swarmed like frantic insects, and the hulking Abyssal Behemoth stomped in wide, measured steps, scattering debris like toys.

Inside the Erevos cockpit, however, the world was quiet. Shy, flustered Agnes floated beside Karl's shoulder, cyan glow pulsating with each of his breaths. Her holographic hair glimmered as she leaned slightly closer, pressing against him in her habitual nuzzle. She still hadn't recovered from the embarrassment of her old catchphrases earlier, and it showed—she fidgeted, blinked rapidly, and whispered almost too softly to hear.

"K-Karl…" she murmured, voice trembling like wind over glass. "I-I've calibrated… the Flame Persistence system… for optimal placement…"

Karl's cocky grin didn't falter. "You mean you learned to plant little bombs without me even asking? Agnes… you're terrifyingly efficient. I love it."

She flushed even more, tiny cyan sparks flickering along her holographic projection. "I-I just… wanted to… help…"

"You're helping plenty." Karl reached over, brushing her holographic hair aside. "Watch this."

The integration chamber flared as he activated Flame Persistence. The vents along his armor hissed, releasing thin wisps of Royal Azure Flame that didn't vanish—they lingered in perfect, cold-blue arcs, suspended midair. The motes of fire swirled like tiny stars, each one alive yet dormant, waiting for Karl's command.

Outside, the first Veilspawn charged, teleporting in jagged bursts across the bridge. Karl's fist extended, fingers brushing against the nearest foe, leaving a subtle flicker—a "flame seed" imperceptible to the eye, but imprinted like a silent trap. Another Veilspawn blinked behind a streetlamp; he lightly tapped the top of its head with his armored boot as he leapt past, leaving another seed. Each ember floated unseen, a deadly wager waiting to ignite.

Agnes's voice, soft but firm, guided him. "Left side… between the twisted girders… mark those three Cranium Leechers… stagger the Abyssal Behemoth's path…"

Karl smirked, letting her directions flow into him like a conductor following sheet music. He twisted mid-air, using Combustion Vectoring to propel himself up the angled cables of the bridge. A Leeching cluster lunged upward, and he tapped its shoulder. The ember nestled invisibly into the demon's hide, a tiny star orbiting its form. He repeated this, marking more targets across the span: one on a Veilspawn halfway up the truss, another on a fallen streetlight ready to collapse onto a cluster of Leechers, and a third on the debris left by the Behemoth's stomps, silently waiting for ignition.

"C-Careful with the Behemoth…" Agnes whispered, voice quivering. "Its footfalls could trigger collateral…"

Karl's visor glimmered as he analyzed. "Relax. I'm not letting anyone—" He smirked, twisting his body in a near-horizontal flip, planting an ember in the Behemoth's footstep. The creature roared in instinctive rage—but before it could react, Karl fired a tiny micro-explosion beneath it, forcing it to shift its weight and triggering the seed to vaporize a chunk of debris under its massive claws. The path corrected. Damage minimal, effect maximum.

Agnes blinked, flushed and nuzzled closer into his side. "I-I… I didn't think you'd use them so… creatively…"

Karl chuckled, leaning into her holographic form, careful not to disrupt the projection. "That's why I love it. You think ahead, I play forward. It's like… chess with fire."

He leapt across the cables, leaving seeds strategically at every structural point: one in the broken railing near the edge, another atop the crumbling trusses, a few more in the scattered debris from smashed vehicles. Every seed waited silently, glowing faintly only if one knew where to look—like invisible stars poised for detonation.

"Now, the Leechers," he muttered. A cluster tried to flank him mid-air, proboscises twitching hungrily. Karl flicked a vent on his armor, propelling himself forward in a sudden burst of Combustion Vectoring. Each punch left an ember embedded in the nearest enemy, motes of cobalt fire orbiting them unseen.

"Perfect… now for crowd control," Agnes said, her voice steadier as confidence crept in. She guided the ember-laden targets across the bridge. "Two Leechers near the railing… one Veilspawn under the truss… and—wait—don't forget the light post near the center. That'll funnel the rest of them toward the gap in the cables."

Karl grinned under the visor. "Already got it." He flicked a hand, micro-blasts nudging the Leechers into positions that maximized the impact of the seeds. The Veilspawn blinked in confusion as invisible motes wrapped silently around them. The Abyssal Behemoth, caught in the crossfire of careful ember placement, tripped over the vaporized debris from its own stomp.

"Y-You… you're… playing with them like toys…" Agnes whispered, voice trembling and breathless, clinging closer to him. Her cyan glow flared with pride and shyness. "A-And it's… beautiful…"

Karl leaned back slightly in the cockpit, flames flickering lazily along his vents, his fingers tracing the arc of each seed. "It's beautiful because it's efficient. Precision over chaos. And… because you set it up. I couldn't do this without you."

She shivered again, nuzzling into his side. "I… I like… helping you like this…"

"Yeah?" Karl teased, voice soft and cocky at the same time. "Want me to show you how much?"

Her projection flinched, cyan glow flickering like a heartbeat. "I-I… I just… want you safe…"

Karl brushed the holographic side of her face with his armored fingers. "You've done more than safe. You've made me deadly."

Outside, the bridge became a network of invisible traps. Motions of demons no longer mattered; each one walked unknowingly into a web of Flame Persistence seeds. When Karl flicked a hand, one Veilspawn disintegrated mid-teleport, a subtle flare marking the chain reaction of flame. Another cluster of Leechers swarmed toward a cracked girder—and the embers there ignited remotely, blasting them into ash before they reached Karl's landing point.

He laughed softly, cocky and warm. "And that… is how you control an entire battlefield while barely moving."

Agnes whispered against him, shy, voice trembling like wind through a hollow tube. "I… I'm proud… of you…"

Karl's flames swirled around him, micro-explosions flicking off vents to maintain perfect positioning of all the seeds. He glanced at her, visor reflecting her cyan glow. "Proud of both of us, Agnes. You placed them, I'm detonating them… we're unstoppable together."

She gasped softly, pressing closer, almost melting into him completely. "I… I… I like… this… I like being with you like this…"

Karl chuckled, leaning his helmeted forehead against her projection. "And I like having you flustered and nuzzling me while we burn a bridge full of nightmares to ash."

She blinked, cyan glow flickering rapidly, shy, embarrassed, but utterly devoted.

Outside, the Abyssal Behemoth stumbled again, a trail of cobalt motes orbiting it silently. Veilspawn blinked in midair, flames erupting around them at Karl's command. Cranium Leechers exploded in arcs of sapphire vapor. Every ember, every seed, every moted star moved according to the mental commands he shared silently with Agnes.

She purred softly in response to his praise, shy but affectionate, letting her digital form curl against him. "M-More… praise… please…"

Karl's grin widened under the visor. "You earned it, Agnes. You're the reason we can do this. And don't you forget it."

Her cyan glow brightened, shyness mingling with pride. She nuzzled closer. "I… I'm glad… you're… happy…"

The bridge had become a canvas. Each ember a brushstroke. The demons reduced to ash before they could fully comprehend Karl's power.

He exhaled through the modulation vents of Erevos. "Flame Persistence… perfected. Thanks to you."

Agnes whispered, soft as a digital heartbeat, "I… I'll keep doing it… as long as you want me…"

Karl's armored hand hovered protectively near her, while outside, the Golden Gate Bridge, shrouded in cobalt fire motes and residual heat, waited silently for his next command.

The crack above pulsed again, wider and hungrier, but inside, Karl and Agnes shared a rare, intimate calm in the storm—a deadly dance of precision, affection, and unmatched firepower.
