Chapter 9 - Buried Truths

Scene : The Hospital

Wail rushed through the hospital corridor like a man running toward the end of the world.

His footsteps echoed — sharp, urgent, desperate.

He wasn't just running to Ali — he was running from everything inside him.

Then… he froze.

A small wave of relief washed over him when he saw Sara standing outside the ICU, her arms wrapped around herself, eyes swollen with silent tears.

He walked toward her slowly and placed a hand gently on her shoulder.

Wail (softly):

"Sara…"

She turned to face him.

Tears welled in her eyes — but she didn't say a word.

Wail:

"Is Ali okay?"

Before Sara could answer, a voice came from the corner of the hallway.

Zayan (serious, quiet):

"We can't say anything right now.

Ali needs… prayers."

Wail turned, surprised.

Zayan stood a few feet away, leaning against the wall.

His face was calm — too calm — but his eyes…

His eyes were holding questions.

Questions only meant for Wail.

And Wail knew it.

 Scene: Zara's Room

---

Zara sat silently on the floor of her room, knees hugged to her chest. The light was dim, but the storm inside her mind was louder than ever.

Wail's words kept echoing.

Over and over.

Like knives on replay.

She didn't cry.

Not yet.

But her chest burned like something was trying to crawl out — something too heavy to hold. She only remembering wali s words.

Flashback

At school annual function where wali shah and Zara play a stage drama where wali propose her in drama.

After Act performance

Ahmed : Bro, you guys rock today.

Aliza : yes wali, and Zara your chemistry are much more louder than your words.

Sara : come on guys, it is just a act.

Wali : No, it's not.

Whole class shocked

Sara : what do you mean?

Wali to Zara : Every dialogue that I deliver today is ture that comes from my heart.

Wali holds her hands gently

Wali : Zara, I really like you. I want to be part of your life and fill your life with happiness and joy so can I?

Zara paused for moment,

Zara : yes

Sara : what?

Wali hugs Zara : I know you will accept me, thank you.

Ahmed to wali : congratulations bro.

Boy 1 : yes bro, congratulations.

Present time

Zara to herself : How beautifully, you trapped me wali shah.

Flashback 2

Zara getting ready for party, Zoya entry her room

Zoya : so you are really go to party.

Zara : yes, wali especially arrange this party for me.

Zoya : Zara, may you should think about him again.

Zara : I trust him, wali will never break my trust. Let's go.

Zoya : you go ahead… , I am not coming.

Zara : ok.

At the Party

Zara enters. The lights dim.

Wali: Attention everyone! Let's welcome our special guest — my love, Zara!

Zara, why are you standing there? Come here.

Zara walks toward him.

Wali: Let's cut the cake. But before that, I have a little surprise for you.

Zara: Surprise?

Wali goes down on one knee and holds out a ring box. The crowd cheers.

Ahmed: Someone's being too romantic today!

Zara blushes, opens the box— and suddenly, spiders spill out of it.

Zara: What the hell?! What kind of joke is this, Wali?!

Wali (laughing): Oh, so our "baby girl" is scared of spiders?

Zara glares at him. Wali's smile fades — his eyes darken, voice turns cold. He grabs her wrist.

Wali: What did you think, Zara? You could play with my friends' feelings and walk away?

No… you have to pay for it. The game has just begun.

Zara: What are you saying, Wali? You're getting it all wrong!

Wali (to the crowd): Attention, everyone! Here she is — the girl who fools people in the name of love, then breaks their hearts when she's bored. Just like she did with Ali!

Zara: Enough, Wali!

She tries to slap him, but he catches her hand mid-air.

Wali (coldly): No, sweetheart. Don't even try that. I'm not Ali — I'm Wali Shah. Don't forget that.

Sara: Leave her, Wali. That's enough. Everyone already knows her true colors.

Wali: You're right. Guards — take that trash out of my house.

Everyone laughs. Zara runs away, tears blurring her vision.

Present time

The door creaked open softly.

Zoya stepped in, quietly, and sat beside her on the floor.

Zara didn't look at her.

She just spoke, her voice low and hollow.

Zara:

"You were right, Zoya.

You were right all along.

Someone like Wail doesn't fall in love… he just knows how to use people."

Her voice cracked.

Zara (continued):

"I was blind. I didn't believe you when you warned me.

Maybe if I had…

Maybe I wouldn't be hurting like this today."

Zoya reached over and pulled Zara into a gentle hug. She kissed her softly on the forehead.

Zoya (whispering):

"That's not your fault, Zara."

Zara finally turned toward her, her voice trembling.

Zara:

"Then whose fault is it?

Why does Wail treat me like this?

Why can't he see that I didn't do anything?"

Zoya gave a soft, understanding smile — the kind of smile that comes from pain too.

Zoya:

"For Wail…

Ali wasn't just a person.

It was his safe place. His comfort. His brother.

Their bond was everything to him."

She paused.

Zoya (softly):

"That's why he's so sensitive about it.

So broken…

Sometimes pain makes people forget the difference between right and wrong."

That's when Zara broke.

She fell into Zoya's arms, crying like a child — not quietly, but desperately.

All the pain she'd held in finally spilled out.

Zoya (gently):

"Don't worry.

Everything will be fixed… one day."

---

 Scene: Hospital Flashback & Present

---

The waiting area outside the ICU was silent.

Not just quiet — dead silent.

Wail, Zayan, and Sara sat on separate chairs, none of them speaking. The ticking clock on the wall felt louder than their breaths.

Then…

---

 Flashback Begins

Wail was just six years old — small, scared, and curled up under the bed.

The thunderstorm outside rattled the windows, and he covered his ears with shaking hands.

He hated storms.

He hated feeling small.

A boy peeked under the bed.

It was Ali — his new roommate at the Hostel .

Ali (teasing):

"Heyyy, what are you doing down there?

Oh… I get it. You're scared of thunder. Be a man, bro. You're acting like my sister!"

Wail didn't respond. He just looked at him with wide, tearful eyes.

Ali's smirk softened.

He knelt down and extended his hand.

Ali:

"Okay, come on. Don't be scared. I'm here for you."

Wail hesitated… then reached out and grabbed his hand.

Ali pulled him out and grinned.

Ali:

"See? I told you. Nothing happened."

BOOM!

Another thunderclap echoed through the sky.

Ali flinched — then immediately grabbed Wail and hugged him tight.

Ali (shouting):

"Mamaaa!"

Wail blinked…

Then he laughed.

Ali pulled back, blushing.

Ali:

"Okay, my bad. But at least you smiled."

He held out his pinky.

Ali:

"Friends?"

Wail nodded slowly.

Ali (softly):

"I promise — whenever you're scared, I'll comfort you.

And when I'm scared… you comfort me."

Wail:

"Okay… but promise me you'll never leave me alone."

Ali (smiling):

"Don't be dramatic, bro."

He pulled Wail into a tight hug.

Ali:

"I won't leave you. Ever."

Wail hugged him back.

And for the first time, the storm outside felt… smaller.

 Present Time

Wail stood outside the ICU.

He looked through the glass window — at the broken version of the boy who once pulled him out from under a bed.

His chest ached.

He whispered, voice cracking:

Wail:

"You're breaking your promise, Ali.

Please…

Come back to your buddy.

I need you today."

– Scene: Ali Wakes Up

---

The doctor stepped out of the ICU, removing his gloves. His expression was unreadable.

Before he could even speak, Wail and Sara rushed to him, their eyes filled with panic.

Wail (breathless):

"Doctor… is he okay?!"

The doctor looked at Wail — then slowly placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.

Doctor (shocked, soft):

"It's unbelievable…

But it's a miracle.

Your friend is awake.

Ali's out of the coma. You'll be able to see him soon."

For a moment — silence.

Wail and Sara froze, eyes wide, hearts stunned.

Like their brains heard it, but their hearts hadn't caught up yet.

Zayan (softly):

"Wail…? Wail, are you okay?"

Suddenly — Wail snapped into motion.

He turned, eyes wild with joy, and grabbed Zayan, lifting him off the ground in pure excitement.

Wail (grinning):

"DID YOU HEAR THAT?! ALI'S AWAKE!

I CAN FINALLY TALK TO HIM!"

Zayan (struggling):

"Y-yes, I heard, bro—NOW PUT ME DOWN!

Are you trying to break my bones too?!"

Wail laughed and finally let him go.

Then, without warning, he turned and hugged Sara tightly — arms wrapped around her like hope just came back to life.

Wail (whispering, overwhelmed):

"You hear that, girl?

Your brother…

My buddy…

He's back."

Sara (softly):

"Hmm… yes.

He's finally back to us, Wail."

She hugged him back, her eyes glassy with tears — but this time, they weren't from pain.

Wail turned to the doctor and grabbed his hand.

Wail:

"Thank you. Thank you so much."

The doctor smiled kindly and nodded.

Doctor:

"He's lucky to have people like you waiting for him."

Then he walked away.

Zayan watched Wail quietly, arms crossed, a soft smile on his face.

"I've never seen him this happy before…

With his whole heart."

---

 Scene: Ali Wakes Up

Zayan and Sara sat quietly beside Ali's hospital bed.

Machines beeped softly. The lights were dim, and the air felt heavy — like even the walls were holding their breath.

Wail paced back and forth, his hands twitching with anxiety.

Zayan (teasing):

"Bro, sit down. You're about to set the floor on fire."

Wail (snapping):

"What the hell is taking so long?!

Why isn't he opening his eyes?"

He walked closer to the bed, leaned over, and whispered softly — voice shaking.

Wail:

… Please open your eyes.

I'm craving to hear your voice, man…"

Sara : Wali, the doctor said he is completely fine. He will wake up soon.

Zayan (smirking):

"Are you guys… actually straight?"

Sara (holding back a laugh):

"Don't worry, Zayan. They're not gay."

Wail (rolling his eyes):

"Haha. Hilarious. Real comedy show, you two."

Suddenly —

Ali's eyelids twitched.

Zayan (excitedly):

"Hey! Look — your baby just opened his eyes!"

Wail and Sara rushed closer, leaning over him.

Ali's eyes fluttered open slowly — weak, blinking at the lights — but alive.

Wail's eyes lit up.

Sara gasped softly.

Wail turned to go get the doctor.

Wail:

"I'll inform the doctor—"

But Ali reached out and grabbed Wail's wrist, his hand trembling.

Ali (whispering):

"Don't… leave me."

Wail froze.

His heart cracked open, his eyes filled with tears instantly.

He turned back to Ali, knelt beside the bed, and gripped his hand tightly.

Wail (choked up):

"I won't. Never again.

---

Scene: Father and Son (Zayan's Night Scene)

Zayan sat alone on the garden bench, under the dim porch light. The air was cool, but his thoughts were burning.

Footsteps approached.

His father.

Dressed in a sharp coat, returning from another trip — emotionless as always.

Dad:

"Oh. You're here."

Zayan (flatly):

"Yeah. When did you get back from America?"

Dad:

"Just now.

Where were you two all day? Both you and Wail disappeared."

Zayan (calm, ignoring the tone):

"How was your official business meeting?"

Dad (stern):

"Zayan.

That's not the answer to my question."

Zayan:

"We were at the hospital."

His father stiffened.

Dad:

"You two okay?

Where's Wail?"

Zayan (noticing a flicker of concern):

"Oh. A little concern in your eyes for your sons… impressive."

(Pause)

"We're with Ali."

His father's face hardened instantly.

Dad:

"What? That fool?

He's still alive?"

Zayan stared at him — stunned for a second.

His thoughts whispered: How can someone be this cold?

Zayan (quietly):

"Yes.

He woke up from the coma."

Dad (bitter):

"Means he's here to spoil Wail's life again."

Zayan smiled — but not from joy.

It was the kind of smile you give when you're done pretending.

Zayan:

"Ali isn't the one who ruined Wail's life."

Dad (snapping):

"Oh, so now you're pointing at me?

You're just like your mother.

Always blaming me for everything."

Zayan stood up slowly.

His voice was calm — but icy.

Zayan:

"I'm sorry, Dad.

But I won't let anyone — not even you — speak like that about my mother."

He looked his father in the eye.

Zayan (firmly):

"Next time… be careful."

Then he walked away.

Leaving the cold silence behind.

Scene: 1 AM (Wail & Zayan's Quiet Moment)

---

It was 1:07 AM when Wail finally reached home.

Everything was silent.

The lights were off downstairs. The world had gone to sleep — but not Wail.

He walked quietly through the hallway when he noticed something.

Zayan's room light was still on.

He paused for a second, then walked over and gently pushed the door open.

Wail (softly):

"I just passed by and saw your light on…

So I came to check."

Zayan (from under the blanket):

"Come in, man.

I'm not asleep yet. I was waiting for you."

Wail walked in and sat on the edge of the bed.

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

They didn't need to.

---

Scene: Brothers at War

Wail sat on the edge of Zayan's bed, eyes fixed on the floor. His voice was low, but every word was drenched in pain.

Wail:

"Ali wasn't just an ordinary friend to me.

He was... everything.

He supported me through my fears, and turned my tears into laughter. We went on adventures together — he filled my world with joy. He taught me how to survive in darkness."

He paused. His fingers clenched.

Wail (continued):

"But Ali wasn't the only one in my world. There was also… us.

The perfect squad.

Me, Ali, Sara, and Zoya. We have known each other since primary school. We laughed, we teased each other… Everything felt perfect."

He looked up, his voice tightening.

Wail:

"Until she came.

Zara."

Zayan's eyes narrowed, but he said nothing yet.

Wail:

"She joined our school in 8th grade. Zoya introduced her to us after her parents died.

She didn't talk to anyone at first… except Ali.

Then Sara accepted her. And so did I."

His voice dropped a note lower, bitter.

Wail:

"Ali and Zara had a great bond. And Ali…

He fell in love with her.

He decided to confess his feelings during the school's cultural festival. He sang a song for her. Not directly — but he pointed at her." He is so excited because afterall she is his first love.

Wail (voice shaking):

"She knew. She got up and left — angry.

Later, they talked backstage… I don't know what happened between them.

After she leaves I arrive there.

Flashback

Wali : Ali what are you doing here? I'm finding you everywhere. Let's go teacher going to announce results. Let's go bro, our trophy is waiting for us.

Ali looks at wali face : you may leave because I already lost my everything.

Wali : hy, Are you okay? Why are you crying? What happened? Tell me.

Wali paused for a moment

Is Zara saying something to you?

Ali hugs wali tightly : wali, why am I so unlucky in love? Why do people always leave me that I love most?

Wali : Look at me, you are not unlucky. They are unlucky to have lost you.

Ali smiles but not with heart he just tries to hide his tears.

Ali : You go enjoy your victory, because this time I am not part of this.

Ali leaves

Wali : Ali, Ali listens to me

Present time

Wali :That day Ali didn't come back, as he said. He leaves us alone.

Wali stands and wipes his tears and says with a joyful voice : But now I'm happy my friend and my buddy came back. I am happy.

Then, Zayan spoke.

But not softly. Not calmly.

For the first time ever, his voice was sharp. Angry.

Zayan:

"Why did you destroy Zara, Wail…

When you didn't even know the full story?"

Wail turned sharply, shocked by his tone.

Wail:

"Bro… can't you see?How Ali suffers because of her . You know, whenever I see her face I only remember Ali's pain and tears . Because this is the first time when he cries in front of me and she is the reason.

Zayan (cutting in, frustrated):

"Wail.

Do you even hear yourself?

You ruined an innocent girl's life — based on nothing but doubt."

Wail gave a cold smile.

Wail:

"She's not innocent.

She's clever — like a fox.

First she trapped my brother… then broke his heart.

So I returned the favor."

Zayan's eyes burned.

Without another word —

He punched Wail.

Right in the face.

Zayan (furious):

"Don't you DARE disrespect her again."

Wail wiped the blood from his lip and smiled.

Wail (mocking):

"Ohhh… so you hit me.

For that ordinary girl?"

Zayan grabbed him by the collar, pulling him close.

Zayan (growling):

"She's not ordinary.

She's my life.

Zara Jahangir belongs to Zayan Shah now.

So stop your pathetic games, Wail — because from now on…

I'm her shield.

If you ever try to hurt her again — you'll have to face me first.

Got it?"

Zayan shoved him back and let go of his collar.

Wail stared at him, shocked.

This wasn't the Zayan he knew.

He gave a cold, tight smile.

And without another word…

Wail turned and walked out.
