Chapter 146: A New Home
Given Kenji's current standing, if he called something "good potential," it must have at least Gym Leader-level potential.
Marcus didn't act coy; he accepted the gift graciously. He felt both gratified and proud of his initial foresight in choosing Kenji.
To Kenji, Marcus was a benefactor who had helped him when he was down.
But to Marcus, wasn't Kenji a benefactor too?
After all, Kenji possessed the system. Even without Marcus, his future achievements wouldn't have been affected. Even if Marcus hadn't stepped up, there would have been a Marcus #2, a Marcus #3...
As the saying goes, gold will always shine.
Conversely, if Marcus had missed out on Kenji back then, he probably would never have had another opportunity like this.
Marcus's achievements were basically capped. He was a City Gym Leader, and climbing higher would be extremely difficult.
And Mia hadn't inherited Marcus's talent or special abilities. Without Kenji, her future achievements might not even match Marcus's.
But now, with Kenji, the situation was completely different.
Of course, Kenji didn't think this deeply about it, nor did he want to calculate gains and losses in his relationships.
Knowing who treated him well and who had helped him was enough.
As for why they helped him, Kenji didn't care.
After chatting with Marcus for a while longer, Kenji quickly found an excuse to escape.
There was no helping it; Marcus's conversation kept drifting, constantly steering the topic toward Kenji and Mia.
Kenji naturally knew what Marcus was plotting, but he and Mia were just friends—the same kind of friends as he and Leo.
As for going further, Kenji had never thought about it.
After fleeing the Edgecliff Gym, it was still early, so Kenji made a call, planning to go see a house.
Half an hour later, a white sedan stopped in front of Kenji.
The window rolled down, revealing the person in the driver's seat.
"Long time no see, Kenji." The man in the driver's seat turned to look at Kenji, greeting him enthusiastically.
"Hello, Mr. Ai." Kenji smiled and greeted him politely, though not overly warmly since they weren't that close.
This Mr. Ai was none other than the Metropolis Academy admissions officer who had come to recruit Kenji at his home.
Metropolis Academy had many teachers scattered across various cities, each with their own tasks and jobs.
During the period after the college entrance exams, they would transform into admissions officers, visiting the homes of students who achieved S-Rank results to recruit them.
Mr. Ai was so enthusiastic toward Kenji mainly because he was the one who had recruited Kenji into Metropolis Academy. Now that Kenji was so valued by the academy, Mr. Ai had also benefited from Kenji's success.
"Get in, Director He already contacted me. Hop in," Mr. Ai said, patting his car and beckoning Kenji.
Hearing this, Kenji walked around the car and sat in the passenger seat.
Mr. Ai stepped on the gas, driving off immediately.
For something small like buying a house, Kenji hadn't been shy. He casually mentioned it to Director He on a messaging app, and Director He had pushed Mr. Ai's contact information to him.
He told Kenji to just contact this guy.
According to Mr. Ai, the house prepared for him was located in the city center.
Kenji didn't have any requirements regarding the location. As long as it was big enough, he would be satisfied.
The Edgecliff Gym was already located in the city center, so it took less than half an hour for Mr. Ai to drive Kenji into a villa complex.
This was an extremely high-end villa area. The security guards at the gate were even equipped with Mightyena.
Since they possessed Pokémon, and Dark-type ones like Mightyena at that, it meant these guards were professional trainers.
Using professional trainers as security guards was truly extravagant.
Kenji looked out the window and saw that the villas in this complex were even larger than the dorms at Metropolis Academy. They were definitely big enough to accommodate an evolved Tyranitar, perfectly meeting Kenji's requirements.
"We're here. If you're satisfied, this will be yours from now on." Mr. Ai parked the car, opened the door, and led Kenji out.
Kenji looked up at the villa in front of him and asked casually, "How much does a villa this big cost?"
Mr. Ai smiled. "It doesn't cost anything."
"This villa complex was built with funds from Metropolis Academy. Generally, only Elite-level trainers are eligible to purchase homes here," Mr. Ai added.
Hearing Mr. Ai's words, Kenji was surprised but not overly shocked.
As a top-tier institution, Metropolis Academy had deep pockets. It wasn't just a simple academy; it owned many properties and industries.
He didn't dwell on it.
Mr. Ai opened the main gate and led Kenji inside.
Perhaps because it was funded by Metropolis Academy, the internal layout of the villa was identical to the dorms at the academy.
This made it easy for Kenji to adapt.
Seeing Kenji satisfied, Mr. Ai handed over the keys without hesitation.
"I'll bring the documents for you to sign later. Once you sign and the process is complete, this house is yours."
"Sorry for the trouble..."
Mr. Ai didn't stay long. After confirming Kenji needed nothing else, he tactfully left, giving Kenji time to settle into his new villa.
The new villa was great in every way, except it was too big and empty, lacking life.
But that was easily fixed. Kenji took the Pokéballs from his belt and threw them one by one.
"POP! POP! POP!!—"
All seven of his Pokémon, except Gyarados, were released.
"Free time. No destroying things," Kenji said simply, then took Gyarados's Pokéball and walked outside.
Although his seven Pokémon weren't exactly well-behaved, Beedrill acted as a strict parent. Even the restless Vigoroth would be careful inside the house, not daring to tear things up.
So, as soon as Vigoroth emerged, it followed Kenji out of the villa to the open space in the back, with Pupitar following suit.
As for Ninetales, she transformed into her human form, lounged lazily on the sofa, skillfully turned on the TV, found a drama, and started watching leisurely.
Bellossom rested her chin on her hands on the coffee table, watching the drama alongside Ninetales.
As for Elekid, it trotted over to Arbok and began massaging Arbok, using small amounts of electricity from its body as it worked.
The tingling, comfortable sensation made Arbok squint its serpentine eyes in pleasure, flicking its tongue.
After Pupitar, Arbok finally felt like a boss again thanks to Elekid.
Elekid was a bit dim and wasn't interested in much besides eating. Arbok catered to this, often secretly sharing its Pokéblocks with Elekid.
This touched Elekid deeply, making it utterly devoted and subservient to Arbok, becoming a fiercely loyal little follower.
