Chapter 283: Moon Lake Town
However, this was good. If the Locator had pointed to a Level 100 Master-rank Legendary, he would have been screwed, left staring helplessly at the target.
If it were overseas, Kenji might have considered waiting until after the Huaxia League Conference.
But since it was local, he could make it in time if he left now.
Decisive as always, Kenji immediately booked a flight to the Western Regions.
According to the Locator, Darkrai was currently near the southern border of the Western Regions.
The Western Regions were already sparsely populated, and that border area was even more desolate, with only a few scattered small towns.
Just in case, Kenji made a detour to pick up Beedrill.
With Beedrill as his trump card, Kenji felt much safer.
Although this Darkrai had just reached maturity, an Elite-level Mythical Pokémon was nothing to scoff at.
But with Beedrill guarding him, Kenji wouldn't be afraid even if a Level 99 Champion-rank Darkrai showed up, let alone a newly matured Elite-rank one.
The only thing to worry about was Darkrai running away.
Darkrai was the Pitch-Black Pokémon. Although it wasn't a Ghost-type (pure Dark), one of its many abilities was transforming into shadows to move around.
It could even hide inside the shadows of people or Pokémon to launch surprise attacks.
This made Darkrai's movements much harder to track than those of Pokémon like Moltres or Raikou.
At 9:00 AM the next day, Kenji arrived in the Western Regions.
But the region was vast. Even landing at the nearest airport, it would take another day to reach Darkrai's location.
Kenji wasn't worried. The Legendary Locator provided real-time tracking.
Unless Darkrai vanished from the face of the earth, it couldn't escape.
After a brief rest to adjust his condition, Kenji mounted Ninetales and flew toward Darkrai's coordinates.
According to the Locator, Darkrai hadn't shown any signs of erratic movement. Since being locked on yesterday, it had only moved within a small area.
Looking at the map, Darkrai was located in a small town called Moon Lake Town (Yuehu Town).
As the name suggested, the town was built around a round lake. During the day, it looked ordinary. But at night, when moonlight hit the water, the lake would emit a faint white glow, earning it the name White Moon Lake.
There was a beautiful legend about White Moon Lake. It was said that seven incredibly beautiful Milotic once lived there. When they left, they shed scales at the bottom of the lake. These scales reflected the moonlight, illuminating the entire lake.
Of course, experts explained this phenomenon as unique geological minerals in the lake reflecting light, which was only visible in the dark.
Despite the scientific debunking, the legend persisted in Moon Lake Town, becoming more romantic and detailed with each retelling.
Rushing as fast as he could, Kenji finally arrived at Moon Lake Town at noon the next day.
Thanks to White Moon Lake, many tourists visited annually, making it a popular tourist destination.
However...
Kenji looked around. The entrance to Moon Lake Town was empty. The main road was completely deserted; not a single car passed by.
Large billboards advertising local attractions stood at the entrance.
Normally, this would indicate a thriving tourist spot.
But right now, Moon Lake Town looked like a ghost town, devoid of life.
Kenji was stunned for a moment, but then he understood.
Darkrai was in this town.
And wherever Darkrai went, nightmares followed for every living creature nearby.
In a place where everyone suffered nightmares every night, no matter how beautiful the scenery was—even if it were paradise on earth—few people would want to visit.
Kenji walked slowly into the town with Ninetales by his side.
Registering identity information was mandatory when entering any town.
At the checkpoint, a middle-aged man in a uniform sat with his head propped on one hand, dozing off. His head bobbed up and down.
Most notably, he had dark circles under his eyes so deep and dark they rivaled a Pancham's.
"Uh... Sir, are you okay?"
Kenji asked softly, afraid a loud noise might give the man a heart attack.
Hearing the voice, the man lifted his eyelids slightly. Kenji saw that his eyes were completely bloodshot. It was terrifying.
"Ah... Are you two tourists? You look like tourists," the man yawned, glancing at Kenji and Ninetales.
Kenji nodded. "Yes, sir."
The man looked at Kenji like he was looking at a fool. "Haven't you seen the news lately?"
"No. Did something happen in Moon Lake Town?" Kenji asked innocently.
This was true. Kenji had been busy training and hadn't paid attention to the news. Although he had a good guess about the situation, getting more information never hurt.
"Aiyah, you young people never do your research before traveling." The man slapped his cheeks to wake himself up, then grabbed a glass mug nearby.
The mug was filled with tea leaves—three-quarters leaves, one-quarter water.
Extremely strong tea.
The man gulped down a mouthful, then lowered his voice. "Young man, leave quickly. Moon Lake Town... is haunted."
"Haunted??!" Kenji feigned surprise. In this world, "haunted" usually meant Ghost-type Pokémon were causing trouble.
The man nodded gravely. "Yes. Check the internet. Starting a month ago, everyone in Moon Lake Town started having nightmares every time they slept.
And the main thing is, it's not just one person. The entire town is having nightmares!
After a while, people suspected a Ghost or Psychic-type Pokémon was hiding in the town causing mischief. We even called in the League to investigate."
"Did they find anything?" Kenji asked while the man took a breath.
The man spat. "Found jack sh*t. It's been a month, and it's the same every night—nightmares. Tourists stopped coming, and even the locals are running away.
If it weren't for the quintuple hazard pay, I wouldn't stay here either. Once I get my paycheck, I'm..."
The man rambled on, basically saying the town was cursed and advising Kenji to go somewhere else.
Through the local's account, Kenji got a clear picture of the situation.
But leaving was out of the question. Kenji thanked the man for the warning but insisted he wouldn't stay long and walked into the town.
Although the nightmares were terrible, there seemed to be no immediate physical danger, so the man didn't stop him. He waved Kenji goodbye.
Walking into Moon Lake Town, the streets were empty. The infrastructure of a prosperous tourist town was there, but there were almost no pedestrians.
Occasionally, he saw two or three locals. Their complexions were terrible, sporting dark circles and looking listless and dazed.
Clearly, everyone here was suffering from the torment of Darkrai's nightmares.
