Chapter 285: The Encounter!! Darkrai!!
The sky gradually darkened.
As the moon hung high and the sun sank below the horizon, day turned into night. Without the sun's glare, the stars began to shine.
On top of the clock tower, a shadow-like figure stood quietly in front of the bronze bell. Its blue eye gazed calmly at White Moon Lake and the full moon above.
If Kenji were here, he would instantly recognize this shadow-like Pokémon as the Nightmare God, the Mythical Pokémon Darkrai.
White Moon Lake was even more beautiful at night.
The bright moonlight spilled onto the water, illuminating the lake and causing it to emit a soft, hazy white glow.
It truly looked like a white moon embedded in the earth.
In the vast grassland, the glowing lake and the moon in the sky echoed each other. The clock tower stood tall amidst this scene. At its peak, Darkrai floated in mid-air, its white "hair" billowing wildly without wind.
So beautiful...
Darkrai's blue eye narrowed slightly in pleasure.
Since descending into this world, Darkrai had been wandering alone.
After drifting aimlessly for an unknown time, it arrived here a month ago.
The moment it saw White Moon Lake from the clock tower at night, it was deeply captivated by the scenery.
So, it stayed for a whole month.
Of course, as a Mythical Pokémon, Darkrai had a weak concept of time.
With its theoretically immense lifespan, a month was just a fleeting moment.
Darkrai didn't know when it would leave to continue its journey. It only knew it hadn't seen enough of this view yet.
While Darkrai was admiring the scenery, a figure silently appeared behind it.
"Wow, this really is the best viewing spot. It's beautiful," Kenji said suddenly, acting as if he hadn't seen Darkrai, looking down at the lake and praising the view.
"Who goes there!!" Darkrai whipped around, staring vigilantly behind it.
"It can talk!" Kenji's eyes lit up. A Mythical Pokémon indeed, capable of human speech.
In theory, Pokémon could learn to speak, but it was incredibly difficult.
Take Team Rocket's Meowth in the anime. Through sheer effort, he learned human language and even how to walk on two legs.
But in exchange, Meowth exhausted all his potential. His level barely changed afterward, and he could never evolve.
"What's so shocking about talking? Ignorant human," Darkrai scoffed disdainfully, though a hint of pride flashed in its blue eye.
Darkrai's voice sounded somewhat childish and androgynous, like a pre-pubescent child.
In fact, Darkrai had no gender.
"Hello, I'm Kenji. The 'Ken' as in Kenji, the 'Ji' as in... well, Kenji," Kenji introduced himself awkwardly.
"I don't care who you are. When did you get here?" Darkrai shook its head.
"Just now," Kenji replied casually.
"What are you doing here?"
"Watching the scenery," Kenji answered. But he met Darkrai's skeptical gaze.
Pausing, Kenji looked Darkrai in the eye and continued, "And... to take you away from here."
"Take me away?" Darkrai froze for a moment, then started cackling as if it heard a joke. "Ge-ge-ge..."
"You want to catch me?" Darkrai questioned.
Kenji nodded, not bothering to hide his intentions. "That's right."
"Ridiculous," Darkrai sneered contemptuously. Then it warned, "Leave now, and I'll let you go. If you stay, I won't be polite."
Although Darkrai looked evil, it was actually a kind-hearted Pokémon deep down.
If this were any other Legendary or Mythical, hearing a human shout about catching them would have triggered an immediate attack.
Being caught by a human was considered a massive insult to them.
Kenji stood his ground, showing no intention of moving.
"Seeking death!! —" Darkrai finally lost its temper. It raised its hand. In the next instant, the area below the clock tower was swallowed by boundless darkness.
This darkness was pure, devoid of any impurities.
Kenji immediately felt dizzy. His body felt light and uncontrollable, as if his soul were drifting out of his physical form.
Dark Void!!!
Darkrai's signature move. It drags the opponent's soul into a world of darkness, putting them into a deep sleep.
In the games, this move was nerfed to a pitiful 50% accuracy, worse than Hypnosis.
But in this world, as the signature move of a Mythical Pokémon, Dark Void was terrifying.
Not only did it cover a huge area, but its effects were potent.
If Darkrai wished, it could trap the soul in the dark world indefinitely, keeping the body in a permanent coma.
Kenji knew how terrifying this move was. But the moment Darkrai cast Dark Void, a cold light flashed behind it.
"SIII!!!! —"
THUD!!! —
Darkrai's body was sent flying, smashing into the bronze bell with a loud GONG.
Darkrai looked incredibly wretched. Its blue eye squinted in pain as it looked back at where it had just been standing.
There, a Beedrill had silently appeared behind it.
With Darkrai's concentration broken, the Dark Void dispelled. Kenji rubbed his head, the dizzying sensation unpleasant.
Beside him, Ninetales was less affected.
Its blue eye glowed intensely, and its nine white tails swayed wildly, each emitting a faint blue light as it resisted the darkness.
Darkrai looked at Beedrill with fear. In just one exchange, it knew it was no match for this insect.
Darkrai had traveled far and met many Champion-level Pokémon, but none had ever approached it so silently.
Fear gripped its heart. Without hesitation, Darkrai's shadow-like body began to fade. In a breath, it vanished from the spot, turning into a shadow that slipped into the bronze bell and disappeared.
Watching Darkrai escape, Kenji showed no panic in his eyes.
If Beedrill hadn't held back just now, a single strike would have put Darkrai in a near-death state.
Since Kenji dared to order Beedrill to hold back, he naturally wasn't afraid of Darkrai escaping.
...
Swish swish swish...
In the dark night, Darkrai emerged from the ground some distance away, looking miserable.
Although Beedrill had held back, the attack still heavily injured Darkrai.
Running while injured was painful.
"Hmph, a gentleman's revenge is never too late..." Darkrai grumbled, looking around. Seeing no one nearby, it let out a long sigh of relief and muttered a threat.
It was a Mythical Pokémon! Give it some time, and next time they met, it would teach that Beedrill a lesson!
Thirty years east of the river, thirty years west! One day, I will have my revenge!! Darkrai swore in its heart.
"Wow, you're quite cultured for a Pokémon. Knowing idioms and all."
Just as Darkrai was about to find a place to rest, a boy's voice sounded from behind it again.
