Chapter 453 - Chapter 453

Chapter 453: Wedding Night

"I'm going to go take a bath now..."

Satsuki rose from the edge of the bed as she said it, the hem of her casual clothes swaying softly with the movement.

"Sure..." Naruto answered, watching her, waiting for her to move.

But she didn't. After the words left her mouth, she simply stood there in place, her head tilted slightly downward. A few strands of black hair slid forward and curtained part of her face, but through the gaps in them, the tips of her ears and the side of her neck were visibly flushed a deep, warm red.

She raised her eyes slowly. Her dark gaze had taken on a softness entirely unlike her usual self, something hazy and luminous beneath it, like light diffused through steam. As her eyes met his and held there, they carried shyness and anticipation and something that required no translation whatsoever.

It was not a look Satsuki often gave anyone. It was warm and unguarded and almost unbearably direct in its own quiet way. Naruto felt his heartbeat stutter badly, his thoughts going sluggish, until all he could do was stare back at her.

The warm amber light in the room seemed to thicken around them.

Satsuki made no move to close the distance herself. She simply watched him with those star-soft, mist-filled eyes, patient and steady, waiting for him to understand the unspoken request. Or perhaps it was an invitation. Or encouragement. Possibly all three at once.

Naruto's voice came out lower than usual, slightly rough from nerves.

"Satsuki... do you want to... bath together?"

The moment the words were out, heat rushed into his own face at speed.

Satsuki's flush deepened at once. But the shyness in her eyes shifted, replaced by a small, satisfied gleam and something much warmer underneath it. She nodded without the slightest hesitation.

"Yes, that's fine."

Naruto went very still.

Satsuki looked at him standing there, burning red despite being the one who'd asked, and felt a helpless, fond amusement rise in her chest. She stepped forward and took his hand herself.

"What are you embarrassed about?" she said, leaning close enough that her next words were barely a breath against his ear. "It's not like this is the first time. Or the second. Or..."

The warmth of her breath against his ear sent a fine shiver down the side of his neck. Whatever remained of his composure did not survive it. He tightened his grip on her hand, stopped trying to form words entirely, and let her lead him in a pleasantly dazed, slightly unsteady walk toward the bathroom connected to the bedroom.

The door swung open. Warm vapor and the clean scent of bath oils drifted out to meet them. The bathroom was spacious and bright, and the large soaking tub had already been filled to a comfortable depth, the water steaming gently. Kushina had evidently thought of everything. The rising mist softened the edges of the tile walls and turned the mirrors into pale, indistinct reflections.

What followed was wrapped in that warmth and light together.

Clothing came off slowly, piece by piece, in the hazy glow. Skin caught the lamplight and the water's shimmer both, surfaces luminous in the steam. The contours of two bodies moved through the mist like something only half-real.

Naruto stepped into the tub and the hot water rose to his shoulders. He reached out as Satsuki followed him in and drew her back against his chest, settling her there.

The water moved around them in small, rocking waves. It slipped between every point of contact, warm and frictionless, amplifying the sensation of skin against skin until there was nothing muted about it at all.

His arms stayed tight around her. His chin came to rest on top of her damp hair. The scent of the same bath oil they'd both used surrounded them, sweet and clean.

In the quiet of the bathroom, their heartbeats seemed louder than usual, reflected by the water's surface, resonating together without any clear separation between one and the other.

Satsuki leaned back against him, completely at ease. She could feel every shift in his breathing. His lips moved in a loose, irregular path along the back of her ear, the curve of her neck, warm and damp.

"Naruto..."

But just as the pressure of his arms and the path of those kisses began to carry something more deliberate behind them, Satsuki reached down and gently caught the hand that had started wandering beneath the water.

Her voice, when she spoke, was low and unhurried, softened by the heat and by something she was visibly reining in.

Naruto's movement stopped. He looked at her through the steam, his expression caught somewhere between wanting and confusion.

Satsuki turned slightly toward him. She lifted one hand and brushed the beads of water from his eyelashes with her fingertips, her expression holding a calm, coaxing warmth.

"Not yet," she said. "Just wait a little. Back in the room."

The arms around her went taut. She leaned in until her lips were nearly at his, close enough that her voice was only for the two of them.

"Just a little longer. Then we go back."

It was a deferral, not a refusal. Moving what had been building to a peak back just slightly, redirecting it toward somewhere more fitting. More private. Somewhere nothing needed to be held back at all.

In the steam-filled bathroom, with the light going soft around them, that restrained waiting had the strange effect of deepening everything it was meant to delay.

Naruto looked at her for a long moment, finding his own reflection in her eyes. He drew a slow breath and let the tension in his arms ease by degrees, though he didn't loosen them.

"...Okay."

The warm water kept moving over them. His heartbeat did not slow down. If anything, the particular quality of that anticipation made it beat harder.

After some time had passed, they stepped out of the tub.

Naruto took a large, soft towel and dried her carefully, unhurried, working the water from her skin in long, gentle passes. Satsuki stood wrapped in her own towel, her black hair loose and damp, droplets still sliding from the ends.

She hadn't put on sleepwear. Wrapped in just the soft fabric of the towel, still flushed from the bath, she existed in that liminal space between bathing and bed.

Naruto crouched slightly, slid one arm under her knees and the other around her back, and lifted her.

Satsuki wrapped her arms around his neck and tucked her face against the warm skin of his throat.

Her arms tightened. Without warning she tilted her head up and kissed him, no preamble, just her mouth finding his with quiet certainty.

Naruto blinked, caught off guard for half a second, then kissed her back without hesitation. His hold on her drew closer. Their breathing filled the quiet bedroom.

They stayed like that all the way to the bed, mouths barely parting. When the edge of the mattress met the backs of his legs he finally, reluctantly, eased away just far enough to look at her properly, taking in the flush across her cheeks and the hazy softness in her eyes. Then, with great care, he lowered her onto the center of the large bed, the fresh bedding receiving her gently.

But then he did not move closer, the way she'd expected. He placed his hands on either side of her and held himself there, looking down at her with an expression that carried full warmth but also something that was working against the current.

His face was still flushed. His breathing was not quite steady. But there was a thought he needed to say.

"Satsuki... these next few days. Isn't this your... fertile period?"

He had kept track. He remembered the rhythm of her cycle, the days that carried the possibility of something more. The thought surfaced now with enough force to pull him back from the edge of everything else and hold him there.

He didn't want anything to happen by accident. Didn't want her to carry the weight of motherhood before she was fully ready for it. Even if she had told him before that precautions weren't necessary, he felt it was his responsibility to ask again before that line was actually crossed.

Satsuki lay beneath him and looked up. The question registered across her face as a brief, still moment. Then something flooded in to replace it, warm and certain and vast.

She shook her head without hesitation. Both hands rose and came to rest gently against the sides of his face.

"It's fine. Come here, Naruto."

Those words took down the last wall between them cleanly and completely. He looked at her the way a man looks at something he still cannot quite believe is his, at everything she was offering him with absolute openness and zero reservation, the courage and the love it took to say yes to all of it, including whatever came after. His chest filled until there was no room left for anything except happiness and the full weight of what he wanted to be for her.

"Then we can..."

Satsuki smiled. It was one of the softest smiles she had. All warmth and satisfaction and something shining ahead of it.

She met his gaze without flinching and said it clearly, with complete steadiness.

"Yes. Let's try together."

She paused once, just briefly, and then finished the thought.

"Let's have a baby."
