Chapter 460 - Chapter 460

Chapter 460: An Unexpected Visitor

Afternoon light came through the heavy curtains in a warm, diffuse gold and spread across the living room sofa and carpet. The air in the new house carried the faint scent of fresh wood, and something warmer underneath it that belonged to the two of them.

Naruto felt as though he had been poured into the cushions. Every part of him was loose and content. His thoughts drifted at the soft boundary between wakefulness and something more pleasant.

They had planned out a honeymoon itinerary in some detail, but Satsuki had made her position clear: they would leave when she felt fully satisfied. What "fully satisfied" meant in specific terms had never been spelled out, but in practice it meant that the afternoon hours had a way of being quietly claimed before anyone consciously decided anything. The day outside could be any temperature. Inside, the warmth tended to accumulate on its own by midafternoon.

Naruto had no complaints about this arrangement.

Right now they were in one of the quiet intervals between. Satsuki had apparently read something in a novel about a practice called a lap pillow and its applications for deepening closeness between people, and had decided they should implement it. Naruto lay stretched out on the wide sofa with the back of his head resting in her lap. Given the way Satsuki was built these days, her posture created a natural curve that kept the overhead light out of his eyes and replaced it with a soft, warm shadow that smelled like her.

She was leaning slightly forward, her fingers moving through his hair and over his face in slow, unhurried passes. His forehead, his cheek, the bridge of his nose. Each touch was light and deliberate, the kind that felt less like grooming and more like memorizing.

The sensation made it functionally impossible to stay fully conscious. He floated.

Somewhere in the pleasant haze, a small self-satisfied thought drifted through. He had managed, somehow, to take the proudest and most guarded person he'd ever known and turn her into a woman who would spend a Tuesday afternoon doing this, who let herself be soft and unhurried and entirely unguarded when it was just the two of them.

He was, objectively, doing very well.

"Naruto." Satsuki's voice came from above, quiet and unhurried. "After the honeymoon, what are you thinking about our responsibilities here in the village? The Fifth seems like he wants you to take on more fairly soon."

Even now, even in this, she kept half an eye on what was coming. He was used to that about her.

"Hmm..." He shifted slightly against her leg. "He definitely wants to pass things off to me sooner rather than later. But I don't think there's any rush. Things are stable, the new systems are still settling in, he and the others can handle it fine for now."

He paused. "I'd rather spend more time with you first. And we've barely had the house to ourselves long enough to actually get used to it."

"That makes sense to me." She agreed without hesitation. After a moment her fingers slowed slightly, and her voice shifted into something quieter, edged with shyness and something that looked forward. "Then, about later, if we end up having children..."

Naruto's eyes opened a little more. "Kids, huh." He smiled at the ceiling. "I think either would be great. A daughter who's beautiful and sharp like you, or an energetic boy. I'd love either of them completely."

Satsuki shook her head gently. "If it's possible to choose... I think a boy would be better."

"Really? Why?" He'd assumed she would lean the other direction. Girls tended to be close to their mothers.

Satsuki pressed her lips together. The color in her cheeks deepened. Her expression went firm in the particular way that was unmistakably and entirely her, the Uchiha certainty, the possessiveness that had no interest in softening itself.

She leaned down until her mouth was close to his ear, and her voice dropped to something warm and just slightly conspiratorial.

"Because a daughter would follow her father around from the time she could walk. And you would be a wonderful father, I have no doubt about that." A brief pause. "But I don't especially want to share that much of your attention. A boy could learn to be independent sooner. He could inherit the Sharingan from my side and your strength from yours, and become someone remarkable on his own." She let that settle for a beat. "Which would leave you free to spend more time with me."

The declaration was entirely unapologetic. There was no performance of embarrassment in it. She meant it completely.

And it did not produce in Naruto any sense of pressure or discomfort. What it produced was a warmth that moved through him from the chest outward, and a specific kind of happiness that had no name except that it was hers.

They stayed like that a little longer. Then Satsuki's fingers stilled in his hair, and her voice came back, soft and carrying that particular kind of quiet anticipation.

"It's getting to be afternoon."

She did not need to say more than that. The tone said the rest.

Naruto felt warmth rise into his face. He didn't answer with words. He reached up and drew his arms around her, pulling himself closer, pressing his face against the warmth of her.

Satsuki felt the response in the way his arms tightened. She bent toward him, her lips finding the curve of his ear, and her voice went lower, carrying something that made his heart rate make a sudden, noticeable decision.

"I've been thinking about whether there's something I haven't tried yet. Something that might be especially good for you. So." A pause, deliberately measured. "You can tell me what you want. Wherever you want to start, whatever you want me to wear. Or not wear. Anything at all."

The air in the room shifted several degrees.

Both of their breathing had picked up. The warmth of her through the thin fabric of her clothes was very clear, and he was in the middle of deciding whether to say something or to skip past saying things entirely when

Ding-dong.

The doorbell rang.

Naruto startled hard enough to sit bolt upright, reflexes carrying him off the sofa in about half a second. He caught himself mid-movement and made sure he didn't clip Satsuki in the process.

He stood there for a moment, hair somewhat disarranged, face still warm, blinking at the front hallway.

"Someone's here. I'll... I'll get the door."

He walked toward the entryway, running a hand through his hair and taking a breath. His thoughts were still somewhat scattered.

By unspoken agreement, everyone who knew them had been giving them space these first days. His parents, Satsuki's parents, Jiraiya, Kakashi, all of them had quietly stayed away, understanding without being told that a newly married couple needed the house to themselves. None of them would show up unannounced at this hour.

So who?

He settled his expression, got his heart rate to something close to normal, and opened the door.

"Hello, can I help you..."

The words stopped.

Naruto stared at what was in front of him. Then he lifted his hand and rubbed his eyes with two fingers, genuinely checking whether something about the afternoon had produced a hallucination.

The figure outside the door was not standing on the ground.

It was floating. Calmly, without any visible means of support, approximately half a foot above the doorstep. A presence made of condensed chakra and will, not quite a living person, not quite not one.

A voice spoke directly into his mind, unhurried and conversational, with the particular cadence of someone who had not had to follow normal speech patterns for a very long time.

"Ah, the newlywed. I've finally managed to actually find you. The trajectory of your growth has gone considerably further than I expected when I first started watching, I have to say. Now, I'd like to make a proper introduction, but I find myself uncertain whether the name I ought to give matches cleanly with the name I once went by, and I wouldn't want to cause a misunderstanding, so I'm going to take just a moment to think about how to phrase that. Actually, wait..."

"You look surprised to see me. That's interesting. By any ordinary expectation this should be our first meeting, I'm fairly certain I have never made direct contact with you in this form before."

"Though I should mention that in a broader sense I have been observing you for some time now, from a more general vantage point. Don't let that worry you. My observation was limited strictly to the scale of life patterns, significant choices, and the weight of your influence on the cause-and-effect structure of the world. Nothing personal. I want to be clear about that. I also want to clarify that what you're looking at is a remnant. Residual chakra and will held in a coherent form. I am not alive in the proper sense. And because the gap of time is quite considerable, I've spent some effort trying to learn how people speak now, so I hope I haven't come across as too strange so far..."

Deep inside the seal space within Naruto's body, the Nine-Tails had been in the middle of a comfortable doze, curled up with its tails tucked in.

The moment that voice reached it, its head snapped up.

Its enormous eyes opened fully, blown wide, and what filled them was not aggression or wariness. It was something rawer than that. Shock that had no composure behind it. Disbelief stretched to its limit. And underneath both of those, something that had crossed a great distance of time to get here and was not sure what to do with itself now that it had arrived.

The Nine-Tails pressed against the boundary of the seal, looking outward through Naruto's senses with a trembling that moved through its whole body, a sound rising from its throat that was more confirmation than question.

"Old man?!"
