When Kai opened the system panel, he noticed a new addition under his ability list — Armament Haki.
With a thought, a dark, metallic aura instantly coated his right arm, spreading from palm to shoulder.
The sensation was heavy yet powerful, like condensed steel and lightning fused together.
Hardening—the fundamental form of Armament Haki—greatly boosted both attack and defense power.
For now, Kai could only use the basic form of Hardening.
If he wanted to coat external objects—like his sword, or even the bullets from his light attacks—he'd need to raise his Borsalino roleplay progress to 50%.
And for the advanced stage—Emission and Internal Destruction—his mastery would have to reach far higher.
Still, even at 40%, the exponential boost was insane. His physical power, speed, and reflexes were already several times stronger than before.
Just as Kai flexed his hardened arm with a grin, there came a knock at the door.
Knock, knock, knock!
He opened it to see Simmons, smiling faintly.
"Kai, Coulson wants to see you. He's calling for a team meeting about the incident."
"Got it."
As he turned to follow her, Kai suddenly asked with a teasing smirk, "Hey, Simmons… did Fitz finally confess to you?"
"Eh?" She froze for a second, then blinked in surprise. "You know about that too?"
Kai grinned. "So he did, huh?"
Simmons blushed lightly but couldn't help smiling. "Yeah… he finally did! Honestly, I've known how he felt for ages. I even made up a fake boyfriend once just to push him a little."
Kai raised an eyebrow. "You made up a boyfriend?"
She laughed softly. "Yep. When Fitz heard about it, he got all gloomy and awkward. Then, out of nowhere, yesterday morning he asked how my 'boyfriend' was doing."
"And you told him you broke up?" Kai guessed.
"Exactly!" Simmons said proudly. "I told him my boyfriend dumped me because he couldn't stand me working with corpses. I even acted all heartbroken about it."
"And then Fitz confessed?"
"Right there on the spot!" she said, her eyes lighting up. "I didn't expect him to actually do it!"
Kai chuckled and gave her a thumbs up. "You're terrifying, Simmons. Women really are born actors."
As they walked toward the meeting room, Kai thought about how Coulson and he had encouraged Fitz to man up back on the Quinjet. Poor guy—he didn't know he'd just walked into Simmons' trap.
Rest in peace, Fitz, Kai thought with a smirk.
In the conference room, Coulson, Melinda, and Fitz were already waiting.
When Kai and Simmons entered, Fitz immediately jumped up, pulled out a chair for Simmons, and shot Kai a smug look like a kid who'd just won a trophy.
Kai resisted the urge to sigh. Yeah, enjoy it while it lasts, buddy.
Once everyone was seated, Coulson got straight to the point.
"Kolok Moses is still terrified after the attack," he said. "He refused to cooperate or name the people whose 'offer' he turned down."
"That's not unexpected. But the orc let him live for a reason. Which means the next person or group Moses rejects might be the next target. That gives us a lead."
He turned to Fitz. "Fitz, I want you to retrieve a full list of everyone who visited Moses in the hospital. Also, get all his communication records for the past week."
"On it," Fitz said quickly.
"Simmons, Melinda," Coulson continued. "You'll monitor the hospital. Anyone who comes to visit him—no matter who they are—you find out their identity."
"Understood," Melinda said.
"Got it," Simmons added.
After assigning them, Coulson looked at Kai.
"Kai, whether Moses helps us or not, we need to locate or eliminate the target codenamed Orc. So, it's you and me. One—gain Moses's trust. Two—track that monster."
He checked his watch, then smiled. "We've got about an hour before your shift ends. Let's use it to check out the last known Orc sighting."
Kai groaned. "What a hassle…"
Coulson laughed. "Come on. I'll buy you barbecue after work."
Half an hour later — Suburban Farm, Austin Outskirts
The black SUV rolled up to the wide stretch of farmland where the last attack had occurred.
Police tape still flapped in the wind around the massive, scorched warehouse.
Because the Orc had appeared here, the farm owner had already been detained for questioning.
Although evidence suggested he wasn't directly involved, the incident had left twelve officers dead—including several state and county troopers—so every detail mattered.
Coulson stepped out of the car, taking off his sunglasses as he surveyed the wrecked farm.
"You know, Kai," he said quietly, "I've always wanted to buy a farm when I retire. Peace, quiet, a nice view…"
He sighed. "But I guess that dream's still a long way off."
Kai peeled an orange in silence, broke it in half, and handed one piece to Coulson.
"Thanks," Coulson said with a grin, taking it.
The two agents walked side by side toward the warehouse.
The yellow S.H.I.E.L.D. cordons still hung around the site, swaying gently in the wind.
The burnt smell lingered in the air.
And deep inside the ruined warehouse… something faintly shimmered beneath the debris.
