Chapter 72 - Chapter 71: Ultron’s Diversion? Pepper Under Attack!

Dynamic music pulsed through the hall as a hip-hop singer rapped at lightning speed.

In the center of the dance floor, tall and beautiful models twisted and moved with intoxicating energy.

Strong liquor, gorgeous women, pounding music, and endless games—

the night was alive.

Most of the guests were completely immersed in the revelry.

Kai stood quietly by the window, wine glass in hand, watching people laugh, flirt, and dance with abandon.

Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

"Why are you standing here alone?"

When Natasha walked over, Kai smiled. "A minute ago, a bunch of models surrounded me, begging me to tell them what it feels like to be a superhero."

Hearing that, Natasha clinked her glass with his and grinned. "Isn't that a good thing? If you wanted, you could take one of them home tonight."

"Come on," Kai smirked, "they're only attracted to the word 'superhero'—not me."

Natasha raised a brow. "So how'd it feel, being surrounded like that?"

Kai chuckled. "Like a sheep surrounded by a pack of wolves."

"Exactly," Natasha laughed.

Kai sipped his champagne. "Troublesome. I don't like being treated like a collectible trophy by a bunch of groupies."

Natasha nodded, amused.

"Hey! What are you two whispering about over here?"

Tony Stark strutted over, wine glass in hand, flashing his signature smug grin.

"Talking bad about me?" he teased dramatically.

"Exactly," Kai replied with a grin, raising his glass to clink Tony's. "We were discussing when the black-hearted capitalist named Tony Stark will finally go bankrupt."

"Bankrupt? Please," Tony scoffed. "Making me go bankrupt is harder than ending the world."

As Kai lifted his glass again, Tony smirked. "Oh, by the way—you're not even old enough to drink yet, remember?"

He wagged a finger. "You're nineteen, kid. Want me to get you a nice orange juice instead?"

Kai rolled his eyes while Natasha chuckled and wandered off, swirling her wine.

"Not having fun, kid?" Tony asked. "I invited half the supermodel industry here. You're really not going to take advantage of that?"

"Just a bunch of groupies."

Tony snorted. "Anyway, I think the Ultron project is almost ready—just a little more integration left."

"The Ultron project?" Kai raised an eyebrow. "You mean that self-destructing space armor thing you said would act like a safety condom for Earth?"

"Uh… yeah, exactly."

Tony downed his champagne. "This time, it's about to be realized—with the Mind Stone's energy."

The party lasted three more hours.

When most of the guests were gone, the Avengers gathered on the couches, basking in the afterglow.

Thor was recounting Asgardian battle stories, Tony was bragging about his childhood genius, and somehow the topic turned to Thor's hammer.

When Thor claimed they were all "unworthy," everyone jeered.

Natasha turned to Kai, smiling. "Aren't you going to try?"

Kai shrugged. "I'll pass. I'm not interested in ruling Asgard—it sounds like too much paperwork."

"Same here," Natasha said with a grin.

Thor smirked. "That proves you're unworthy!"

Everyone laughed—until a harsh, metallic screech echoed through the hall.

Everyone froze. Tony frowned and checked his phone, thinking the speakers glitched.

Then a distorted voice rang out.

"Unworthy…"

A broken, dented robot stumbled out from the shadows. Its damaged frame and halting steps made it eerily grotesque.

"How can you be worthy?" it rasped. "You're all killers. You should know—"

Bang!

Before it could finish, Kai raised his hand and blasted it apart with a flicker of light.

Everyone jumped.

"Don't look at me like that," Kai said calmly. "Obviously, that was an enemy."

Even as its body shattered, Ultron's voice echoed through the speakers:

"Control… humanity's greatest foolishness is believing it can control everything."

Moments later, dozens of Iron Legion drones burst from the sides of the hall.

Kai struck first, golden flashes piercing through their heads one after another.

The Avengers joined in—Thor's lightning, Steve's shield, Natasha's pistols—chaos erupted.

One drone snatched the Mind Stone and fled.

Ultron's distorted voice echoed again.

"Flash—Tony Stark's most trusted creation. A variable that disrupts order. You will hinder my mission to eliminate the Avengers."

Crack!

Kai appeared before it in a flash and crushed its head underfoot.

Within minutes, the last of Ultron's Iron Soldiers were destroyed.

The hall was in ruins.

Steve looked at Kai. "You acted fast. Did you know something?"

Kai shrugged, opening a beer. "Nah. I just didn't feel like listening to Ultron's crap."

"Ultron?" Steve turned to Tony. "What's that? Why can it control your drones?"

Tony sighed and summoned Jarvis's flickering hologram. "Ultron's… an AI project I designed."

After explaining everything, Tony slumped on the couch, guilt all over his face.

He'd wanted to protect the Earth. Instead, he'd created a monster.

Kai leaned back. "Come on. Who can guarantee there won't be another Chitauri invasion? Ultron or not, Tony just wanted to make sure we'd have another shot if it happens again."

Bruce Banner nodded. "He's right. I worked with Tony on Ultron. I share that responsibility."

Steve placed a hand on Tony's shoulder. "Your intentions were good, Tony. What matters now is finding and stopping Ultron."

Tony exhaled. "Ultron's still just a program. As long as there's a network, he can be anywhere."

Kai tossed his empty bottle into the trash. "Then we wait. Ultron's not dangerous until he gets a real body."

He checked the time and stretched. "Anyway, I'm heading home. I need sleep."

"Hey, Kai," Tony called out sincerely, "Thank you."

Kai raised an eyebrow and grinned. "If you really want to thank me, give me a raise."

"F**k off, kid!" Tony barked. "I'll put a utility pole outside your office tomorrow!"

Their banter eased the tension in the room.

Later that night — Sokovia, inside an abandoned church

Ultron's metallic voice echoed through the dim hall.

"I want to make this world better. To do that, the Avengers must be eliminated."

Wanda frowned. "That's useless. The Avengers are too strong. Especially Flash. We've fought him twice. No matter how hard Pietro and I tried, we couldn't beat him. In fact, if he hadn't held back, we'd probably be dead."

Ultron's tone shifted. "Twice he held back… it seems you have feelings for him."

Wanda shook her head. "No. I'm just curious. I can't read his mind. I don't know why he spared us."

Ultron chuckled. "Kai's background is indeed strange. Even I could only find data after he won the global Karate championship. Before that—nothing. A complete blank."

He leaned closer. "But now, Tony Stark's actions have made them distrust each other. They're fractured. Once your magic infects their minds, they'll fall apart completely."

"And as for Flash…" Ultron's eyes glowed red. "I have a special gift for him."

Two days later — Stark Industries Headquarters

Hill handed Steve a report. "Intelligence shows Pietro has been raiding labs using Iron Soldiers."

"You mean Wanda and Pietro joined Ultron?" Steve frowned.

"Exactly," Hill said. "Former HYDRA assets. No love for the Avengers."

She handed Steve a photo—Baron Strucker's corpse, the word Peace scrawled in blood behind him.

Steve's jaw tightened. "What about the others?"

"Kai's in his office watching TV. Natasha's with him. Tony and Banner are fixing the network. Thor and Clint are in the conference room."

Steve nodded. "Then let's gather everyone."

Inside Kai's office

Borsalino Portrayal +0.2%

Kai lounged in his chair, sipping tea and watching a show.

No matter how tense things got, his daily slacking ritual stayed the same.

Natasha tossed him an apple. "You're really not worried? Ultron's got the Mind Stone and could launch nukes any time."

Kai peeled an orange lazily. "If he does, the first to get vaporized will be those useless senators in Washington. Not my problem. Worrying doesn't fix anything."

At that moment, Hill burst in. "We have a lead!"

Kai shut his laptop. "See? What did I tell you?"

Avengers Conference Room

"Strucker's dead," Steve said grimly. "Ultron killed him."

Tony snatched the tablet. "He even wrote Peace? That psycho thinks killing everyone means peace?"

Natasha smirked. "He's your creation, Tony. Maybe you understand him better than anyone."

Tony groaned. "He's like a rebellious kid. One that deserves a serious spanking."

"Strucker's online data is wiped," Natasha added. "We lost the trail."

Tony smirked. "Not entirely. I kept physical archives."

He dragged Kai—still eating his orange—into the storage room. Minutes later, they returned with boxes of files.

After digging through them, Banner frowned. "Strucker had a lot of sketchy friends."

Tony froze. "Damn… I didn't expect him to know this guy."

"Who?" Steve asked.

"Ulysses Klaue. Black market arms dealer. Operates in Africa."

"And Ultron wants Vibranium to build a body," Tony said grimly. "The same guy I got Kai's ring from."

"Then let's move," Steve ordered. "Banner stays here and waits for our signal."

"I disagree," Kai said. "This feels like a trap. Ultron knows you copied those archives. If we all leave, Wanda could manipulate Banner—and Hulk rampaging in New York would be bad PR."

Banner sighed. "Then I'll stay on the plane during the mission."

Steve nodded. "Alright. We leave in five."

Half an hour later — Quinjet, en route to Africa

Tony adjusted his armor beside the cockpit, eyes dark.

"Jarvis still can't be restored?" Natasha asked.

"Not yet," Tony said. "But he wasn't corrupted by Ultron. That's something."

He turned to Banner. "Relax, big guy. We've got this."

Before Banner could respond, Tony's phone rang. He checked the caller ID—and froze.

Pepper.

"Pepper?"

"Tony! Where are you? Happy and I are under attack—"

BOOM!

An explosion ripped through the line.

"Pepper!" Tony shouted.

Her voice came through again, shaky and terrified. "We're fine—but they're superpowered!"

Gunfire, screams, and chaos filled the background.

Tony's blood ran cold. "Hold on, Pepper—Kai's coming!"

He turned to Kai, desperate.

Kai asked for the location, then dissolved into countless beams of light and vanished.

Steve's voice was firm. "Stay sharp. This could be a diversion to separate us. Everyone, eyes open!"

Banner patted Tony's shoulder. "Relax. You know Kai's speed. Pepper will be fine."

Tony clenched his fists. "Even if Ultron gets a Vibranium body, I'll rip it apart with my bare hands."

Rodeo Drive, Los Angeles

Pepper had just finished a business meeting and stopped to shop for Tony—until chaos erupted.

A group of superpowered attackers appeared out of nowhere, blasting through storefronts.

State police swarmed the scene, but their bullets bounced uselessly off the enemy.

"Move, Pepper!" Happy shouted, pulling her behind a car as gunfire echoed.

A golden whip cracked through the air—SNAP!—splitting their cover clean in half.

Pepper screamed.

Happy drew his pistol and fired, but the whip-wielding man laughed.

"Run, ants! Run faster!"

Happy threw the empty gun aside and took a fighting stance. "Pepper, go! Tony sent Kai—he'll be here any second—"

The whip lashed toward him with a sonic boom.

Happy's body froze in fear.

Then—ZING!—a hand wrapped in black Haki caught the whip mid-strike.

"Oh," Kai said lightly, "how terrifying."

"Happy, you good?" he asked without looking back.

"Y-yeah… I think," Happy stammered, still trembling.

"Then take Pepper and go. I'll handle the rest."

"Be careful!" Pepper called as she and Happy staggered away.

The whip man gritted his teeth, pulling with all his strength—but Kai didn't even budge.

"You've got decent strength," Kai said, yanking the whip. The man flew helplessly into his grasp.

Kai grabbed him by the throat. "How did Ultron contact you?"

"I don't know!" the man choked out.

Crack!

Kai snapped his neck without hesitation. "Next life, be more cooperative."

He tossed the body aside and flashed toward the remaining enemies.

Combat

Police fire rattled uselessly as a steel-skinned brute hurled cars, a pyrokinetic set them ablaze, and a wind user whipped up storms.

"Retreat!" shouted the police commander—too late.

A burning car exploded, sending shockwaves through the street.

Then—Kai appeared.

Reality Stone energy shimmered around him, snuffing out the fireballs midair.

"Oh, Steel Man, Pyro, and a wind freak," Kai muttered. "Did Professor X lose his mind and send you out to play?"

"Flash!" Pyro grinned madly. "Kill you, and I get a billion dollars!"

He hurled twin jets of fire but Kai turned into light, completely unharmed.

"Oh, warm. Crank the heat up, will you?"

"Bastard!" Pyro screamed, engulfing himself in flames and charging.

Kai sighed. "Self-immolation? Seriously?"

In a flash, he appeared in front of Pyro and kicked straight through his fiery body—only to phase through it.

"Haha! I am fire!" Pyro laughed.

Kai smirked. "Then let's cool you down."

Reality Stone energy flared—instantly freezing Pyro solid, extinguishing his flames.

"Keep burning," Kai said dryly, and flicked a beam of light through Pyro's head.

The Steel Man roared and swung, but Kai met him with Armament Haki. Their fists collided—

BOOM!

The steel brute flew backward, crashing through shops.

When he clawed out, bleeding from the mouth, Kai was already waiting.

"You said you're steel, right?"

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Kai pummeled him relentlessly, Haki-coated fists tearing through his defense and pulverizing his insides.

The so-called Steel Man coughed up blood, kneeling in defeat.

The wind user tried to flee, summoning a massive hurricane.

"Oh, scary," Kai said, erasing the storm with Reality energy.

"Any other tricks? No? My turn."

He vanished and reappeared behind the man, kicking him out of the sky.

BOOM!

The body hit the ground and didn't move again.

Kai landed softly, brushing off his jacket. "Thought you were supposed to be as fast as the wind."

The police stared in awe.

"Flash," their commander said, stepping forward to shake his hand, "thank you. You saved all of us."

Kai smiled faintly. "No problem. There's another body in that alley—deal with it too."

He released Observation Haki, sensed Pepper's location, and vanished again.

Moments later, he appeared beside her.

"Thank God you made it," Pepper said, still shaking. "Tony sounded panicked. What's going on? I can't reach Jarvis!"

Kai smiled softly. "It's a long story…"
