Song Jie turned over comfortably, but at that moment Mu Tingying suddenly pounced onto the bed.
"Holy crap!" Song Jie blurted, not expecting Mu Tingying to actually sleep beside him.
He rolled over and landed exactly where she had intended to lie.
Mu Tingying hadn't expected Song Jie to roll toward her—she had only meant to sleep next to him. The sight of the bed drained her strength; she no longer had the energy to move away.
Song Jie reflexively reached out, and by an unfortunate coincidence his hand grabbed an inappropriate place.
"Ah!!!" Mu Tingying shrieked. Song Jie scrambled away.
Mu Tingying flung herself onto the bed; her face buried in the mattress, she went silent.
"Ahem… that was just a subconscious reaction. This time, it really wasn't intentional," Song Jie explained awkwardly.
Mu Tingying didn't want to speak to him. Not only had Song Jie seen her, he had—however unintentionally—taken advantage of her. What could she do now?
"All right, don't cry. You can have the bed; I'll sleep on the sofa," Song Jie said helplessly and walked toward the sofa.
Before long, Mu Tingying cried herself to sleep. Song Jie, however, couldn't sleep—he was watching Little Green's breakthrough progress. At dawn he was woken by a Military Mage.
Seeing Mu Tingying still asleep, he didn't disturb her and went to the Military Commander's office.
The female Military Commander's eyes were bloodshot; she looked as if she hadn't rested.
"Military Commander, do you need me for something?" Song Jie asked.
She gestured for him to sit and got straight to the point. "I heard your Summoned Beast is Warrior-level?"
Song Jie nodded.
"An hour ago I received intelligence from my superiors." She looked at him gravely.
"To stop the Bloodthirsty Ants army, we must find and kill the male ants among them. If we remove their male commanders, the Bloodthirsty Ants will gradually disintegrate."
According to the report, the male ants acted as commanders—receiving orders from the ant queen and controlling limited groups of Bloodthirsty Ants.
If a male ant died, the ants under its command would lose direction and disperse. Even if they couldn't stop the army entirely, they could at least weaken it.
"Who provided the intelligence?" Song Jie asked.
"It came from the High Commander, who received it from Jiang Shaoli," she answered.
Song Jie recognized the name—Jiang Shaoli was Jiang Shaoxu's elder cousin. Jiang Shaoxu had previously mentioned their encounter with the Bloodthirsty Ants.
"I called you because You City (Oil City) doesn't have many flying demon beasts left. We need your help," the Military Commander continued.
The Bloodthirsty Ants army was heading for You City—this was their home, and they couldn't stand by and let the beasts break through.
"You want me to join the hunt?" Song Jie asked.
"Yes. We're short-handed. Another person means another bit of strength." The Commander's real reason was clear: Song Jie's Summoned Beast was Warrior-level.
The Flying Eagles in their military were only Servant-level and couldn't sustain long flights. With Song Jie's help they could kill many more male ants in the limited time they had.
"Okay." Song Jie agreed. He had hunted Bloodthirsty Ants before and wanted more essence orbs—this was a welcome opportunity.
"On behalf of You City, thank you." The Military Commander bowed.
If not for the news Song Jie had brought, they might not have known in time. She couldn't bear to watch the families she'd guarded fall into such a hellish fate.
That night the residents of You City had already been evacuated to a safety barrier. Song Jie asked, "When do we depart?"
"My people are already waiting outside," the Commander said. She wanted to go as well, but You City still needed her command presence.
Song Jie followed her to the military camp. About a dozen domesticated Flying Eagles were already prepared.
"Everyone going with you is my subordinate; if you encounter any problems, consult them," the Commander said.
"Okay." Song Jie observed the troops—these were experienced military personnel, and at least two of their elemental systems had reached the intermediate level.
Just then Mu Tingying hurried into the camp and found him.
"Where are you going?" she demanded.
Song Jie turned. "I'm going outside the city to hunt Bloodthirsty Ants. Do you want to come?"
Mu Tingying didn't dare. "There are so many Bloodthirsty Ants outside. You're going to your death!"
"Don't worry. And remember—you still owe me two Galaxy Veins." Song Jie ignored her protest, greeted the Military Mages, and prepared to depart.
Watching them leave, Mu Tingying gritted her teeth. "Go on, go to your death—then I'll owe two fewer Galaxy Veins!" she muttered.
"It's not good for a girl to say one thing and mean another," the Military Commander said with a smile as she turned away.
Mu Tingying suddenly felt the Commander had misunderstood; she didn't know why she'd sounded caring just now. She really wanted to slap him—preferably twice. Inwardly she thought, It's best if he dies out there!
Outside You City, Song Jie and the others headed toward the approaching swarm. Compared to Song Jie's Wind Riding Sky Eagle, the domesticated Flying Eagles were slow.
"I'll go ahead. We'll meet up later," Song Jie said.
"Okay!" the leading Military Mage replied. He knew their Flying Eagles couldn't match Song Jie's.
With a "swoosh," Song Jie, riding the Wind Riding Sky Eagle, cut through the air and soon became a tiny figure in the distance.
"Today's young people are remarkable—such strength at such a young age," the leading Military Mage said, moved.
"We're getting old. The era of the young is coming, but before that we old guys can't let You City fall into the hands of demon beasts," another said.
"Exactly. This is our home—we've lived here for decades. Even if we die, those demon beasts will remember how formidable the people of You City are!"
"Remember when you were young and you were so scared you peed your pants?" someone teased.
"Holy crap, that's ancient history—don't bring it up!" the embarrassed veteran protested.
Their laughter masked heavy hearts. Every mission could be their last. Returning meant luck; not returning meant joining fallen comrades. Yet they went on, determined to defend their home.
