ELENA POV
Moving Mom happened faster than I expected.
We had her settled in Damien's Vermont safe house, a beautiful, isolated cabin surrounded by woods. He'd had medical equipment delivered within hours. Monitors, medications, everything she needed.
"It's peaceful here," Mom said, looking out at the trees. "I can see why you chose this place."
"It was meant to be a refuge," Damien said quietly.
"Life has a way of forcing us into the contingencies we plan for," Mom said.
We got her settled, made sure everything was working properly. Then the three of us sat in the living room to finalize our plans.
"I'll leave for Zurich tomorrow morning," Damien said.
"How long will you be gone?" I asked.
"Three days. Maybe four if there are complications." He looked at me. "Elena, I don't like leaving you. Especially now."
"I'll be fine. Adrien will be here. And this place is secure."
"And if Brighton comes anyway?" Damien asked.
