Chapter 25 - Chapter Twenty-Four: Revelations

"Why are we here?"

"Simple. My life cycle is roughly thirty years. You probably can't tell but I'm going."

"I can."

Lying was something BB had sworn off. Though, who doesn't break a vow here and there?

"Okay, but I need somebody to keep the cult in check. Then, I need somebody to keep Backtown in check. You two can choose which one you want to have."

The death was clear as day to BB. She was going to pass in her sleep. Scott was going to die in a few years.

"Let me tell you this. I will take the cult. Religions usually outlive single societies."

Scott already knew the answer to the question. BB was a manipulator. Perhaps he could manipulate the cult into doing the right thing. Then Scott would be the one to usher in a new age of Backtown. He had a history with regime changes.

"Then I'll take Backtown. Better than leaving it all to BB. You know what they say about church and state?"

"That they should stay separate?"

"Of course."

BB was the one running the cult and hadn't betrayed his family. This was going better than the alternate world they visited.

"I should be seeing you in a few days."

"How so?"

"Well, we simply need to meet every now and then."

"True."

The two went off on their own little adventures as BB slowly tried to bend his new religion to the right path. You'd be concerned by how easily it is to create a murder cult. Sometimes BB even thought about giving it up. Then, every Wednesday, he would make his followers go and pray at Mistress's tomb whilst he had a discussion with Scott over policy.

"They're clingy aren't they?"

BB crawled out of his group of followers and was basically running the ten miles from the church to the cafe.

"You have no idea."

"Yes, I do."

"Anything else we need to do?"

"Well, they've become better people because they think they need to. Cut the water to the church for a few days. Bottle the leftovers and surplus."

A smile crossed his face as he told the proposal.

"You're really good at this."

"It's my curse. Besides the ones you carved into my skull."

One day, a few decades later, BB and Scott had met for the last time. BB had grown some grey hairs and Scott had a full head and a pot belly he wore like a badge of honor.

"Do you think of what we're doing?"

"We do what's right and we get everyone else to help."

"We're doing horrible things."

"And we've made good people."

"I don't want to lie to them anymore."

"Okay."

Two days later, Scott died of heart enlargement. BB made sure to keep humanity on the right check whilst also keeping it moral as he could make it. Someday, the two met again.
