I woke slowly, the kind of slow where consciousness crept in like it was afraid of startling me. For a few seconds, I just lay there, staring at the canopy above the bed, listening to the soft hush of the castle waking around me. Distant footsteps, a door closing, the low murmur of voices somewhere far away.
Then my body caught up with my brain. I blinked.
Once.
Twice, and then I sat up so fast the room tilted.
"…Oh."
That was the only word my mouth could form as sensation rushed through me—heat lingering under my skin, an unfamiliar awareness of my own body, a softness where there hadn't been softness before. I pressed a hand to my chest, not in panic, just…disbelief.
