Chapter 291 - Chapter 168: Uchiha: From Warring States Twin Titans to Clan Annihilation

"Material One:

During the Warring States Period, there were two powerful ninja clans, the Senju Clan which valued love, and the Uchiha Clan which valued power. The two clans saw each other as enemies, and would immediately attack upon hearing the other's clan name.

However, the Uchiha Clan Leader, Uchiha Madara, and the Senju Clan Leader, Senju Hashirama, had a unique friendship. Through several victories, Senju Hashirama eventually touched Uchiha Madara, leading to reconciliation and the establishment of Konoha together.

Senju Hashirama supported Uchiha Madara to become Hokage, and Uchiha Madara himself also wanted to become Hokage. During the Hokage election, all clans and residents of Konoha supported Senju Hashirama to become Hokage, and ultimately, Senju Hashirama became the Hokage."

"Based on the material and your knowledge of history, analyze why Uchiha Madara ultimately lost the election, and the reasons for Senju Hashirama's success," Mokgetsu asked while looking at all the students after he finished reading.

Even Shisui, who had already done the exercise, showed a thoughtful expression, because Mokgetsu hadn't given him a high score.

Obito scratched his head, feeling this question was harder than any historical question he had ever encountered, because the textbook barely talked about Uchiha Madara. He only remembered that Uchiha Madara was very bad, and after defecting, caused great destruction to Konoha.

"Could it be because Uchiha Madara defected?" Obito suddenly thought to himself, it's reasonable to think that a traitorous ninja cannot become Hokage.

However, Obito didn't say this out loud because he thought the Hokage election might have been held earlier.

"Because the Uchiha Clan worships power and doesn't have a good reputation, so everyone supported the Senju Clan who values love," Kakashi thought and answered.

Not only during the Warring States Period, but even now the Uchiha in Konoha still have a similar image.

"Except for Obito," Kakashi silently added in his heart, as Obito was indeed an outlier among the Uchiha.

"What do you mean worshiping power has no good reputation, Kakashi, you're slandering me," Obito said indignantly.

"Isn't it possible that you're not a normal Uchiha, and I'm just answering the question," Kakashi said calmly.

"You only got part of it right. If it's out of ten points, I can give you four," Mokgetsu scored.

"Only four points..." Kakashi continued to think.

"Because Senju Hashirama's youth burned more intensely than Uchiha Madara's!" After some thought, Might Guy expressed his answer.

"Half a point," Mokgetsu awarded a score for the effort in thinking.

Obito and Nohara Rin also expressed their answers, but their scores did not surpass Kakashi's.

"Kakashi's answer is correct, but not complete. It's not only because Uchiha Madara and the Uchiha Clan had worse reputations, but also because the Senju Clan and Senju Hashirama were the victors of the war."

"Uchiha Madara reconciled with the Senju Clan after losing the war to them. Essentially, the Uchiha Clan had already been defeated, which is different from other ninja clans that willingly joined Konoha."

"One side is the victor, and the other is the loser. Naturally, everyone would vote for the well-reputed victor, even if Senju Hashirama wanted Uchiha Madara to be Hokage, his followers would not agree," Mokgetsu explained the complete answer.

In Mokgetsu's view, this question was actually quite simple and didn't require much knowledge.

"Why is it like this? Aren't they supposed to be comrades after reconciling? Why do they still care about past victories and defeats?" Obito asked puzzledly.

He could understand why Senju Hashirama had more support, but he didn't understand why everyone would support Senju Hashirama when even he himself supported Uchiha Madara.

"Even if Uchiha Madara considered others as comrades, others might not consider Uchiha Madara as a comrade, and there are also family interests involved," Mokgetsu patiently answered Obito's questions.

Mokgetsu liked Obito's kindness very much, but Obito shouldn't think that others are as kind as he is.

When talking about the benefits to each family when Hashirama became Hokage, Obito became even more confused, as he could understand the words, but not the meaning.

Mokgetsu glanced around; only Kakashi and Shisui could barely keep up. Kakashi was more mature, and Shisui was more deeply engaged as a member of the Uchiha.

Mokgetsu didn't mind, as having such performance at this age was quite good. He continued to teach the next question.

"After the First Hokage, Senju Hashirama, passed away, his younger brother, Senju Tobirama, became the Second Hokage. To prevent another Uchiha Madara from appearing, he consolidated the Uchiha Clan and created the Konoha Police Department, responsible for village security, giving the Uchiha Clan the authority to manage security.

Not long after the creation of the Konoha Police Department, some members of the Uchiha Clan attempted to rebel and seize the Hokage position, ultimately failing under Anbu's attack. From then on, Anbu began monitoring the Uchiha Clan, and the Uchiha Clan's reputation worsened, disliked by many ninja clans and the public."

"Based on the above material, analyze the impact of the Konoha Police Department on the Uchiha Clan and the reasons why the Uchiha were disliked by the public."

Concerned that someone might not understand Anbu and Konoha Police Department, Mokgetsu also explained the functions of these two departments specifically.

"So people don't like the Uchiha Clan? I hadn't noticed at all," Obito scratched his head and asked in confusion.

He felt quite popular himself; the elders were always so enthusiastic towards him, always trying to stuff food into his hands.

"That's because everyone doesn't dislike every Uchiha equally. Your kindness is appreciated by the villagers, Obito," Mokgetsu said with a smile.

"Indeed, you are quite popular with the old ladies, Obito. It seems everyone really likes you," Nohara Rin agreed wholeheartedly.

Receiving praise from two people he cared about, Obito's little face turned slightly red as he chuckled, "Everyone's just too enthusiastic."

Shisui felt deeply touched by this; Obito was indeed the only Uchiha he had seen who was popular among the villagers, a fact Shisui admitted he couldn't match.

Kakashi lowered his head in thought for a moment, then responded:

"The Konoha Police Department granted a lot of power to the Uchiha, and that caused them to become arrogant, seeking greater power and leading to their rebellion. The Uchiha's reputation deteriorated because of the rebellion, which was disliked by everyone, and an ill-natured Uchiha working in public security might further provoke the residents' dissatisfaction."

"Shisui, any new thoughts?" Mokgetsu didn't rush to grade Kakashi but instead looked at Shisui to ask.

"It's roughly similar to Kakashi's thoughts, but I have a different view on the rebellion aspect. I think the rebellion is related to Uchiha Madara's past defection. Madara, after all, was the Clan Leader of the Uchiha Clan and had the power to influence many people," Shisui thought for a moment and replied.

Mokgetsu nodded then looked at the other students.

"I feel like the Konoha Police Department has made the clan contact outsiders less frequently. There was once an Uchiha Yashiro who suggested that I should directly enter the Police Department after graduation. As for why we aren't liked, I can't quite figure it out," Obito replied.

"Obito, you did a good job answering this time," Mokgetsu smiled and nodded.

Whether by coincidence or something else, Obito hit on a key point this time.

Obito immediately smiled, feeling that his theoretical knowledge might still have hope.

After listening to all the students' answers, Mokgetsu announced the answer. This question was much harder than the previous one; it could be said to be the core issue of the Uchiha Clan.

"Due to the power brought by the Konoha Police Department, the Uchiha became arrogant. At the same time, because many clan members joined the Police Department, the Uchiha Clan became more isolated, significantly reducing communication with outsiders. A single clan controlling an entire department caused apprehension and suspicion among other clans and residents.

The more isolated the Uchiha became, the more proud and arrogant they grew. Managing security in this state inevitably led to more trouble, resulting in more and more negative news about the Uchiha. Furthermore, the rebellion increased Konoha's leadership's vigilance against the Uchiha, ultimately expanding the conflict between the Uchiha and Konoha, causing their reputation to continue to worsen."

There were some things Mokgetsu didn't mention, like placing many Uchiha in the Police Department to create a more comfortable environment, which could lessen the manifestation of the Sharingan and the Mangekyo Sharingan, weakening the overall strength of the Uchiha Clan.

But that leans a bit too much towards a conspiracy theory and needs to be unraveled step by step.

Mokgetsu really felt that Tobirama was a genius; aside from not being as strong as Hashirama, he excelled in every other aspect, using the Konoha Police Department to make the Uchiha unknowingly content with their situation.

Shisui grew increasingly alarmed as he listened. After careful consideration, he realized that everything Mokgetsu said lined up perfectly.

Even Uchiha Fugaku, the current Uchiha Clan Leader, had personally approached him, indicating that he could leverage his power to move him into the Police Department for early training.

This Konoha Police Department, which the Uchiha took pride in, actually brought so much trouble to the Uchiha Clan. Shisui truly felt a chill when he pondered it deeply.

"Did the Second Hokage foresee this outcome from the beginning, or was it due to the Uchiha's own reasons?" Shisui couldn't help but wonder.

"So complex... It turns out that these are the kinds of questions you usually deal with, Shisui," Obito remarked in awe.

"Huh? Were these not the kinds of questions you were answering?" Shisui was taken aback and asked, assuming that Obito had always faced similar questions.

"Of course not," Obito answered, then handed his test paper to Shisui for inspection.

Looking at Obito's test paper, Shisui was a bit confused. Weren't these the kind of questions typically asked in Ninja Academy exams? These should be easy.

"Although it's the same training, I adjust the questions based on your skill levels," Mokgetsu explained.

His teaching was tailored to the individual, even assigning Shadow Clones to chase Obito and Shisui at different speeds.

Of course, once Obito graduated, the questions would become similar to Shisui's because there needed to be some growth by then.

Mokgetsu lectured for an hour and a half altogether, then allowed the students to rest for half an hour before beginning the afternoon's training.
