Chapter 4 - Chapter 3

The air between them felt… still.

Not tense—not exactly. But aware.

Like two predators acknowledging each other without showing their fangs.

Rimuru Tempest studied him with a calm, almost friendly expression. But Rai could feel it—layers upon layers of analysis happening behind those golden eyes.

Beside him, Milim Nava bounced excitedly.

"Rimuru! Rimuru! He's strong! Not as strong as me, but still strong!"

Rai scratched his cheek. "Appreciate the honesty."

Rimuru chuckled softly. "That's Milim for you."

Then his gaze returned to Rai.

Sharper now.

"You're… unusual."

Rai didn't pretend to misunderstand. "I get that a lot."

"Not just your strength," Rimuru continued. "Your magicule signature… your skill composition… it's very similar to mine."

A brief pause.

"But not identical."

Rai smirked slightly. "Would be boring if it was."

Rimuru's smile widened.

"Fair point."

Another silence passed—but this one was different.

Less probing.

More… mutual.

Then Rimuru clapped his hands lightly.

"Well, no point standing outside. Come in."

Inside, the atmosphere shifted completely.

Warm lighting. Clean architecture. Organized movement.

Tempest wasn't just functional—it was comfortable.

Rai's eyes moved constantly, taking everything in.

Dwarven craftsmanship… monster labor… structured logistics…

He really built all this in just a few years…

Rimuru noticed.

"Proud of it," he said casually.

"You should be," Rai replied without hesitation. "This isn't just a city—it's a system."

Rimuru raised an eyebrow.

"That's a very… specific way to put it."

Rai shrugged. "Old habits."

They entered a meeting room. Milim immediately flopped onto a chair—upside down.

"I'm hungry!"

"Of course you are," Rimuru sighed.

He turned to Rai. "Food?"

Rai paused.

Then nodded. "…Yeah. That'd be nice."

Minutes later…

A table full of food.

Rai stared at it.

Not because of how it looked.

But because of what it meant.

Real food. Taste. Texture.

Things he hadn't experienced since…

He shook his thoughts away.

"Go on," Rimuru said.

Rai didn't need to be told twice.

He ate.

And for a moment—

He was just human again.

Milim was already on her third plate.

"This is soooo good!"

Rimuru smiled faintly, watching them.

Then—

"Alright," he said, tone shifting just slightly. "Let's talk."

Rai stopped eating.

Here it comes.

Rimuru leaned back.

"So… where exactly did you come from?"

Direct.

Efficient.

Rai respected that.

"Another world," he said simply. "Same as you."

Rimuru didn't look surprised.

"Thought so."

Milim raised her hand mid-bite. "Oh! Is he from the same place as you?"

"Probably," Rimuru replied.

Then his gaze sharpened again.

"But that's not what I'm most curious about."

Rai met his eyes.

"Then ask."

A brief pause.

Then—

"How much do you know about me?"

Silence.

Milim blinked. "Huh?"

But Rai didn't look away.

Instead—

He smiled.

"Enough."

The room changed.

Subtle.

But undeniable.

Rimuru's presence pressed down—not aggressively, but deliberately.

"That's a dangerous answer."

Rai leaned back in his chair.

"So is the question."

For a few seconds—

Neither spoke.

Then—

Rimuru exhaled.

And laughed.

"Alright. I walked into that one."

The pressure vanished.

Just like that.

Milim looked between them, confused.

"…Did I miss something?"

"Nothing important," Rimuru said lightly.

But his eyes lingered on Rai.

Confirmed, that look said.

You're not normal.

Rai smirked slightly.

Right back at you.

Later…

They stood on a balcony overlooking Tempest.

The city glowed under the setting sun.

Milim had already wandered off—probably chasing food again.

Rimuru rested his arms on the railing.

"You're strong," he said plainly. "Stronger than you should be this early."

Rai didn't deny it.

"I adapt fast."

"Yeah… I noticed."

Rimuru glanced at him.

"And you're holding back."

Rai chuckled.

"So are you."

Rimuru smiled.

"Touche."

A comfortable silence settled between them.

Then—

"You planning to stay?" Rimuru asked.

Rai looked out over the city again.

People laughing.

Monsters working.

A nation built on trust.

Then he spoke.

"Maybe."

Rimuru nodded.

"You're welcome here."

Simple.

Sincere.

But not blind.

Rai could tell.

This wasn't unconditional trust.

It was… measured acceptance.

And honestly?

That made it more real.

"Thanks," Rai said.

Then, after a pause—

"But I'm not the type to just sit still."

Rimuru smirked.

"Good. Tempest doesn't need dead weight."

Rai grinned.

"Then I'll make myself useful."

That night…

Rai stood alone on a rooftop.

The city was quiet.

Peaceful.

But his mind wasn't.

Rimuru Tempest…

Demon Lords…

This world…

Then—

He looked at his hand.

It shifted—slightly—before returning to normal.

[Skill integration progressing.]

[Predator evolving.]

[New Unique Skill candidate detected.]

Rai's eyes narrowed.

"Oh?"

A slow smile spread across his face.

"Now we're talking…"

Far below—

Unseen—

A certain Demon Lord watched from a distance.

Rimuru's expression was calm.

But his thoughts were anything but.

Rai…

Just what are you becoming?
