Chapter 41 - What We Build

Chapter 41: What We Build

The estate had grown quieter since the others left.

Not empty.

Never empty.

But quieter.

The halls no longer echoed with Kin's endless complaints or Gus and Blue arguing during training sessions. Rito's soft footsteps no longer drifted through the upper floors late at night, and even Mira's sharp remarks had somehow become part of the atmosphere.

Now—

Only silence lingered.

X stood near the doorway of Zak's room, arms crossed as he watched Selene carefully change the dark cloth wrapped around Zak's stomach.

The curse had spread further.

Thin black veins crawled slowly outward from the wound left by the ancient Veil blade, twisting beneath the skin like living shadows.

It wasn't fast.

But it wasn't stopping either.

Zak looked down at it before sighing.

"…That's ugly."

Selene didn't look amused.

"You're lucky it's moving this slowly."

"Lucky isn't the word I'd use."

Selene tightened the fresh bandages around his waist before finally stepping back.

"…Any pain?"

Zak smirked faintly.

"…You asking because you care?"

"No," she replied instantly.

"…I'm asking because if you die after all this trouble, I'll be irritated."

Zak laughed softly at that.

Though the laugh ended in a rough cough.

X finally stepped further into the room.

"You should rest."

Zak glanced toward him.

"…You've said that six times today."

"And you ignored me all six times."

"Consistency matters."

X rolled his eyes slightly.

But Selene noticed it immediately.

The small change.

The ease in his expression.

A year ago, X would've never stayed in a room this long discussing someone else's condition.

Now—

He was helping organize patrols.

Managing disputes.

Watching over Zak's territory while he recovered.

Even the pack had begun naturally looking toward him for direction.

And somehow…

He hadn't resisted it.

Zak noticed Selene watching him.

A faint grin crossed his face.

"He's getting comfortable ordering my people around."

X snorted softly.

"Your people are terrible at listening."

"Because they're yours."

"That explains a lot."

Selene shook her head quietly.

"…You're both insufferable."

But despite the words—

There was warmth there.

Small.

Subtle.

And in times like these—

That mattered.

Later that evening, X and Selene stepped outside the estate together.

The cold air rolled through Hollowfen gently, carrying the scent of burning lantern oil, fresh bread, and distant wood smoke across the growing town.

The sky above had begun darkening into deep shades of blue and silver.

And below—

Hollowfen was alive.

People moved through the streets in groups, voices and laughter filling the air beneath rows of hanging lanterns. New buildings stretched farther than they had only months ago, fresh stone roads weaving between homes, markets, and workshops that hadn't existed a year earlier.

Human merchants sold supplies beside vampire craftsmen.

Hybrid guards patrolled peacefully through the streets while children chased each other between market stalls without fear.

It had become real.

Selene watched quietly as they walked.

"…It's grown again."

X nodded once.

"…Refugees mostly."

"And you keep letting them stay."

"They need somewhere to go."

Selene glanced toward him briefly.

"…That sounds dangerously compassionate."

X smirked faintly.

"Don't spread rumors."

A few villagers passing by immediately stopped when they noticed them.

One older man lowered his head respectfully.

"Evening, my king."

X sighed instantly.

"Hollowfen's too small for kings and queens, don't you think?"

The man laughed awkwardly before continuing down the road.

Selene watched him go.

Then—

"…Maybe it shouldn't be."

X looked at her immediately.

"…Don't start."

But she didn't smile this time.

"I'm serious."

That made him pause.

Selene slowed slightly as they reached the center of town.

The market square was crowded tonight.

Lanterns glowed warmly overhead while musicians played softly near the fountain at the center of the plaza.

For a moment—

It almost felt normal.

Selene's eyes moved across the town carefully.

"It keeps expanding," she said quietly.

"More people arrive every month."

A pause.

"Humans. Hybrids. Vampires."

X crossed his arms slightly.

"…And?"

"And eventually this place won't survive as a hidden settlement anymore."

That made him look at her again.

"You're thinking too far ahead."

"No," Selene replied softly.

"I'm thinking exactly far enough."

The wind shifted gently through the square.

"Look around you, X."

His gaze moved slowly across Hollowfen again.

The homes.

The lights.

The people.

"They trust us," Selene continued.

"They built their lives here because they believe this place can protect them."

A pause.

"…But eventually, someone stronger will notice us."

X's expression hardened slightly.

"…Let them."

Selene shook her head.

"You still think like a fighter."

That irritated him more than he expected.

"And what exactly is that supposed to mean?"

"It means you still believe strength alone solves everything."

X looked away toward the distant treeline.

"…Usually does."

"No," Selene said quietly.

"It survives things."

A pause.

"…Building something lasting is different."

That made him fall silent.

They continued walking slowly through the streets together.

For once—

No urgency.

No battle.

No enemies.

Just Hollowfen.

A group of hybrid children ran past them laughing before nearly crashing into X.

The young boy froze instantly upon realizing who he bumped into.

"S-Sorry!"

X stared at him for a second.

Then sighed softly.

"…Watch where you're running."

The child nodded rapidly before sprinting off again.

Selene smiled faintly.

"…You're soft now."

"Don't say things like that in public."

She laughed quietly.

And somehow—

That sound made the town feel warmer.

Eventually they reached the edge of Hollowfen where the newly built homes stopped and untouched forest stretched endlessly beyond the outer lanterns.

Dark.

Wild.

Unclaimed.

Selene looked toward it carefully.

"We could expand farther."

X immediately frowned.

"…Into those woods?"

"There's space," she said.

"Enough for farms. Housing. Defensive walls."

"And enough hidden things out there to wipe out half the town."

Selene crossed her arms.

"…You're afraid."

X scoffed softly.

"Of the woods?"

"No."

She looked directly at him now.

"…Of what this place is becoming."

That hit harder than he expected.

Because she wasn't wrong.

Kings built kingdoms.

Rulers built nations.

And nations attracted war.

X had spent most of his existence destroying things.

Not building them.

Selene stepped closer beside him.

"You already created something worth protecting."

Her voice softened slightly.

"…Now you have to decide how far you're willing to go to keep it."

The lanterns behind them flickered gently against the growing night.

And for the first time in a very long time—

X didn't have an answer.
