The cairns were the first thing, and Jayde was off the horse and walking toward them before she had worked out why.
Somebody had been building them for a long time. Not one generation of somebody. The stones at the base of the nearest had gone into the ground far enough that grass had closed over them, and the stones at the top were sharp-edged and pale and had been put there inside the last year, by a person who had walked out here in winter and stacked rock at the edge of a place their whole family had agreed never to enter.
The second site was a day and a half north of the first, and it broke the whole thing.
