Chapter 27 - Chapter 27 - Those Who Watch

The Ancient Sanctuary entered a state of profound silence after the wave of energy dissipated. It was not calm — it was restraint. As if the place itself were holding its breath, aware that something irreversible had begun.

Celestine climbed the chamber's steps with steady strides, but the weight of what she had done followed every movement. She had not broken the chains, but she had not accepted them either. That simple act of refusal had been enough to echo beyond the Sanctuary's walls, crossing layers of the world that should have remained untouched.

Leonhardt walked just behind her, alert to every shadow. The air felt different, denser, as if it were laden with intent.

— We're being followed — he said quietly.

— Not physically — the Guardian replied. — Not yet.

When they emerged once more onto the upper platform, the pillars no longer glowed the same way. The light was weaker, irregular, as if the Sanctuary were adapting to Celestine's new presence — not as a guest, but as a factor of change.

She stopped at the center and felt a chill run down her spine.

— They're watching — she murmured.

The Guardian inclined his head slightly.

— Yes. Those who exist outside the divine hierarchy.

— Entities that have sworn loyalty neither to Heaven nor to the Abyss.

Leonhardt frowned.

— So now we have more problems?

— Now we have witnesses — the Guardian answered.

The space before them rippled for an instant, almost imperceptibly. No portal opened, no creature appeared. Even so, Celestine felt something pass through — a cold, analytical consciousness, devoid of clear emotion.

The Void reacted with a defensive impulse.

— It's not hostile — she said. — It's… evaluating.

— Like a predator — Leonhardt commented.

— Like a judge — the Guardian corrected.

Celestine closed her eyes and allowed the Void to expand slightly, just enough to signal presence. It was not a threat. It was a warning.

The response came as a whisper at the edge of perception.

Interesting.

She opened her eyes.

— Whoever it is… knows I'm not invisible.

The Guardian nodded.

— And that changes the game.

— Until now, you were a tolerated anomaly.

— Now you are an observed variable.

Leonhardt let out a dry laugh.

— Great. I always wanted to be part of a cosmic experiment.

Celestine almost smiled — almost.

But the light moment did not last.

The ground trembled faintly, not like before, but irregularly, as if something were moving in the outer layers of the Sanctuary.

— It's not the Heavens — said the Guardian. — This is… terrestrial.

Celestine felt it.

Footsteps.

Many of them.

— Hunters — she murmured. — Humans.

Leonhardt drew his sword.

— They felt the pulse.

— Yes — the Guardian replied. — Ancient orders have awakened.

— Groups that exist solely to eliminate what threatens the established balance.

Celestine took a deep breath.

— So they're coming for me.

— Not just for you — said the Guardian. — For what you may become.

The shadows around the Sanctuary began to move unnaturally. Distant figures emerged among the outer ruins, armed, careful, avoiding the emission of any strong magical signal.

— How many? — Leonhardt asked.

— Enough — Celestine answered.

She walked to the edge of the platform, looking down at the world below. For the first time since accepting the Void, she felt something new forming within her — not fear, not anger, but strategic resolve.

— We won't fight here.

Leonhardt looked at her.

— Are you saying we're going to run?

— I'm saying we're going to choose the terrain.

The Guardian watched her with renewed attention.

— You're thinking like someone who has survived too long to act on impulse.

Celestine slowly clenched her hand.

— If they want to hunt me…

— then they'll have to learn how to follow me.

The Void responded, silent and attentive.

And in the distant shadows, those who watched made their first true record of Celestine d'Arnoir.

Not as a villain.

Not as a threat.

But as the beginning of something that could no longer be ignored.
