Chapter 111 - Chapter 111: Winter's Grip

Chapter 111: Winter's Grip

POV: Adam

The soulbond's complications revealed themselves immediately.

Morning training found me practicing earthbending—basic exercises to center myself after the ceremony's intensity. Stone pillars rose and fell, meditation in motion, muscles warming against the lingering winter chill.

Across the fortress, Ciri stubbed her toe on a misplaced chair.

"Fuck!" The curse came from my mouth before I registered the phantom pain. My concentration shattered, the pillar I'd been shaping collapsing into rubble.

Lambert's laughter echoed from where he'd been observing. "That's going to be entertaining."

"It's going to be exhausting." I kicked the rubble aside, feeling Ciri's annoyance bleeding through our connection. "We feel each other's everything. Pain, emotions, random discomforts. How do we function if every sensation doubles?"

"You learn barriers." Rán had arrived, drawn by the commotion. "Mental walls allowing connection but filtering shared sensation. Soulbonds require training to use properly—assumed you understood that before accepting."

"We understood the concept. Not the... intensity."

"Concept is always less than reality." The druid's smile held sympathy. "Come. Meditation exercises. Learn to separate your mind from hers while maintaining the bond's benefits."

POV: Ciri

The morning's frustrations gave way to afternoon's revelations.

Sparring with Adam had always been challenging—his elemental versatility created problems that pure combat skill couldn't address. But with the soulbond active, something fundamentally changed.

She knew where he'd strike before his muscles tensed. Not prediction—awareness. His intent flowing through their connection, giving her microseconds of warning that transformed every exchange.

She phased behind his earth barrier. He was already turning, ice spear launching toward the space she'd occupied, water whip following toward where she appeared. She dodged—barely—and counter-attacked knowing he'd block with air precisely where her strike would land.

"Stop." Geralt's voice cut through their dance. "Both of you. Explain what just happened."

"We anticipated each other." Adam lowered his stance. "Not guessing—knowing. The bond shows intent before action."

"That's..." The witcher searched for words. "That's impossible advantage. In combat, reading opponents is half the battle. If you read each other perfectly—"

"We coordinate perfectly." Ciri finished. "Against enemies, that means combined attacks they can't predict because we're not communicating. We're just... acting together."

POV: Adam

The combat demonstrations continued until we'd exhausted every Skellige warrior willing to face us.

None lasted more than minutes. Our synchronized assault—Ciri phasing to create openings, my elements exploiting them instantly—proved impossible to counter. Even Thorvald, who'd beaten me handily during the trials, found himself overwhelmed by attacks from angles that shouldn't have been possible.

"Impressive." Yennefer's assessment came cold but genuine. "Though against Hunt riders, you'll face opponents who've fought together for centuries."

"Centuries of coordination through practice. Ours is perfect from the start." I caught the water I'd been manipulating, let it flow back into its basin. "They'll have to adjust to something they've never encountered."

"Assuming they don't simply overwhelm you with numbers. Eredin commands hundreds of riders if he chooses to commit them fully."

"Then we don't fight hundreds. We fight selectively, target leadership, avoid direct confrontation when the odds are impossible." I met her violet eyes. "We're not planning to win through force alone. We're planning to win through precision."

"And if precision fails?"

"Then we have an army of Skellige warriors, two witchers, and the most powerful sorceress on the continent backing us up." I smiled despite the tension. "We're not alone anymore, Yennefer. That changes everything."

POV: Adam

Evening found me at the fortress forge.

The pull toward fire had grown since the soulbond ceremony—something about the ritual had accelerated connections I'd been developing through spiritual training. Volcanic energy beneath Skellige called to me now, heat that lived in the earth's bones waiting for acknowledgment.

"You're drawn to the flames." The blacksmith—a barrel-chested man named Thorfinn—had noticed my regular visits. "Can't keep away from the forge these days."

"There's something... comforting about them."

"Heat's in your blood, is it?" Thorfinn laughed at his own joke. "My grandfather spoke of fire-speakers, men who could bend flames like you bend stone. Said they burned out young, consumed by their own power."

"Cheerful thought."

"Reality isn't cheerful. Just real." He offered me a hammer. "Want to learn proper smithing? Won't teach you magic, but might give your hands something to do while your mind wanders."

I accepted the hammer, felt its weight in hands that had grown accustomed to shaping elements. The fire's warmth drew me closer, and for a moment, I felt the fourth element stirring—distant but present, waiting for the threshold I'd eventually cross.

"I'd like that." The words surprised me with their sincerity. "Teach me to work with fire properly."

"Properly means patience. Heat doesn't rush—it builds, transforms, creates. Try forcing it and you get burned." Thorfinn guided me toward the anvil. "Let's start with basic shaping. Iron into horseshoe. Simple, but shows whether you've got the temperament."

Through the bond, I felt Ciri's curiosity at my sudden interest in smithing. Sent back warmth, fascination, the sense of something approaching that I couldn't quite name.

Fire was coming.

I intended to be ready.
