Chapter 13 - Chapter 5: Ambush

The heavy rain showed no sign of stopping, the clouds above them became even denser, and the multitude of corpses around them made Su Ming feel indescribable.

It was like excitement, or like the relief after breaking free from shackles. He wanted to talk to Cindy, to share some joy, but she was more focused on the mission and did not respond to his jokes.

Just as the Joker once said, a person, a city, if it wants to descend into chaos and madness, all it takes is a gentle push from behind.

He had pushed Harley, pushed the Two-Faced Man, and now Su Ming was the one being pushed.

After the madness of deathblow, he felt great, like drinking a bottle of ice-cold beer in the dog days of summer, every cell in his body cheering from the inside out.

He turned his head to look at the many lifeless, broken corpses behind him, while Cindy did not notice his abnormality, searching for the building's entrance.

The building where Harley was also had the same absurd style, the front door facing the street was actually painted on with oil paint, with the actual entrance being a wall made of thick red bricks.

"Alright, no door, we can only climb up the wall."

Cindy took a rope with a grappling hook from her belt. Initially, she just wanted to have a chat with Harley, so she didn't want to make things too serious, breaking in through the window didn't quite look like a visit.

Su Ming came back to his senses and, looking at the building in front of him, his experience immediately told him there was more than just Harley inside:

"Then let's go, be careful, you can never guess what might be inside a madman's house."

Both of them simultaneously threw their grappling hooks, which securely hooked onto the roof, and with their strong upper body strength, they quickly climbed up.

Previously unaware of what this building was used for, the windows on the first and second floors were all blocked, only the third floor had a platform resembling a crude lookout tower, likely used by the circus madmen for shooting at pedestrians or each other.

With a quick flip, he landed steadily on it, the rain making everything noisy, and his landing was soundless.

Cindy also arrived simultaneously, the two black and yellow masks met with a slight nod of acknowledgement.

"Crash...."

Su Ming kicked open the window beside him, and with his great strength, the window frame and glass all flew inward, as the two of them slipped in, with their guns ready, vigilantly watching their surroundings.

"Clear."

Su Ming flexed his shoulders, this building had lights, so the situation was clear at a glance.

They now looked like they were in a simple dormitory, a long corridor with small rooms on either side with closed doors. The floor was covered with dust and trash, only a ghost would know how long it hadn't been cleaned, and the rainwater on him and Cindy quickly turned into small muddy puddles.

"Don't these lunatics ever take a bath?"

Cindy shook her head, seeming not pleased with the smell around, their uniform helmets had an anti-toxic mask function but weren't odor-proof.

The helmets of the masked people were custom-made, smells were an essential component of combat's five senses, these special anti-toxic features were more expensive and precise, completely different from ordinary products outside.

Su Ming certainly smelled it too, the odor somewhat resembling rancid swill, but he was more concerned about the stairs not far away leading upward:

"Never mind those, let's head upstairs to find Harley."

"Wait, there's a trap."

Cindy tilted her chin to signal him to look; at the corner of the stairs, there was a faintly glowing fishing line.

He went over, uncovering the garbage at the other end of the fishing line, and discovered it was tied to a grenade.

This grenade appeared to be custom-made, entirely red instead of the usual olive green of military grenades, painted with a large white smiley face, clearly a masterpiece of the Joker Gang.

Yes, this was the madmen's entertainment game, a contest of self-mutilation or murder, and what lay before them was the famous 'Blow Friends to Death with Joke Bombs, Then Laugh Madly' game, undoubtedly one of their favorite pastimes.

No matter when the Joker saw this program or their mad self-destruction among utmost chaos, he would always laugh maniacally, marveling at his greatness.

"Not good! Get down!"

Su Ming reacted instantly, when you pull off a prank, of course, you'd want to secretly watch how the tricked person gets embarrassed.

Since there was a grenade deemed as a prank here, the circus folks must be nearby.

And just as his words finished, strange figures swarmed out of the room on both sides of the corridor, these maniacs with twisted makeup screeched with mad laughter, stretching their arms as they hopped and ran towards the two of them.

Cindy and Su Ming certainly wouldn't consider this a warm welcome, because as they rushed out, dense bullet rain and explosives also came flying towards them.

Su Ming took shelter at the stair's corner while Cindy leapt out through the window again, hiding on a wooden platform built outside the wall.

Then, a series of explosions followed, and he felt as if he was trapped in a popcorn pot, the deafening noise assailed his eardrums.

The powerful airflow swept up everything around the explosion point, strong hot winds forced him to grip the stair railing tightly so as not to be blown away, and he could even see bomb fragments, with exaggerated white painted smiley faces, scratching a spark off his shoulder plate and flying away.
