Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: The Basilisk Chamber

The next room hit us like a wall of tension. My instincts screamed danger, forcing me to close my eyes. "Salazar, eyes closed," I whispered through the wind, activating the Whispering Charm—our secret method of communication through currents of air. No one else could hear us, not even a basilisk if it had ears to listen.

I focused my unique magic-sensing ability from the system, letting it map the room in ways my eyes never could. The air shimmered with thick, pulsing magical energy. Then my mind registered it—subtle shifts in the flow of magic, enormous and lethal. A basilisk. The sheer magnitude of its presence froze my heart for a moment.

"Confirmed," I murmured through the wind. "Basilisk. Moving slowly, but it's aware of our presence."

Salazar's voice, barely a whisper on the currents, responded, "This is… magnificent. Terrifying. You really think we can handle it?"

I didn't answer, only inching forward, invisible and careful. Charging my most powerful ice spell, I focused every ounce of magical energy. A minute passed, though it felt like an eternity. The basilisk's massive form coiled, its head shifting slightly, sensing something amiss.

Then, with precision, I unleashed the spell. A torrent of freezing magic shot forward, encasing the basilisk in a block of ice, locking its colossal body in place. Its tail lashed helplessly against the stone floor, sparks of magical energy cracking through the ice.

"Now," I breathed to Salazar, "the head. We end this before it can react."

I summoned a pillar of stone from the ceiling, shaping it into a razor-sharp spike. Time slowed as I guided it straight toward the basilisk's brain. The pillar slammed through the frozen skull, shattering a section of the ice in a spray of frost, and I could feel its life force waning beneath the stone.

Even with my eyes closed, I extended my senses into the basilisk's form. Carefully, I plucked out both eyes, knowing how potent they were for research, for magic, for dark experiments. Summoning a secure container, I placed the eyes inside, sealing it and stashing it safely in my satchel.

I exhaled, letting the wind charm carry my relief. "Eyes secure. You can open yours."

Salazar opened his eyes, gazing at the motionless beast. "Even for us," he said slowly, "even with necromancy, dark arts, and all the things we've experimented on… this is dangerous. This is on a whole different level."

I nodded in agreement, the weight of the moment sinking in. We both knew the basilisk wasn't just a creature; it was a force of nature, a terror preserved from an ancient era. The room, now silent except for our measured breaths, felt almost sacred. Dangerous, yes—but it was ours to study.

"This is only the beginning," I said quietly. "Imagine what we can do with this… with the eyes, with its remains. But we respect it. For now."

Salazar smirked, the adrenaline still in his veins. "Agreed. But next time… next time, I hope we get a bigger challenge."

I only chuckled, already planning how to dissect the basilisk safely, extract its magical properties, and add its bones, scales, and venom to our growing arsenal. Even after centuries of experimentation, even after creating golems and taming dragons, this was the kind of discovery that sent chills through us—because it was alive in a way nothing else we'd fought had been.
