Free evolution was a skill he had spent a great deal of effort to master, yet this girl seemed able to control her Pokemon's free evolution as well.
He evolved freely, but that other Pokemon was made to evolve by the girl, so the abnormal one isn't Kadabra, but Sabrina!
After Kadabra evolved into Alakazam, its strength instantly rose to the Elite Advanced Level, equivalent to Gastly's.
Sabrina not only made Kadabra evolve but also enhanced its power, which was a bit over the top!
However, Ash quickly figured out the key reason; perhaps Kadabra's evolution didn't actually enhance its powers but rather it had always been at the Elite Advanced Level and was held back due to suppressed evolution.
This might be a unique training method possessed by Sabrina and her Pokemon.

The Elite Advanced Level was Alakazam's true level, and before battling those who challenged the Gym, Sabrina would suppress Alakazam back to Abra to battle them.

Maintaining Abra's form served as a way for both Sabrina and Alakazam to train superpowers.

Sabrina seemed utterly unconcerned with the state of the Gym, instead gazing at the clash site with a slight twist in her cold demeanor, revealing a hint of excitement.

But now there's another issue; if two Elite Level Pokemon are clashing, this Gym could not withstand much more!
Even if Saffron Gym was generously funded with excellent construction materials, it couldn't possibly withstand the energy from two Elite Level Pokemon clashing!

"What happened? How did it suddenly… Ash, did you create that barrier?" Misty hadn't finished asking when she noticed the blue barrier covering the arena.
