Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: Dr. Lizard Tempted by the Demon

When Hawk and Gwen reached the second floor.

Dr. Lizard had already disappeared, replaced by Dr. Connor, who was back in human form but still had irreversible injuries on his chest.

Blood was seeping from the corner of Dr. Connor's mouth, but he managed a smile as Hawk walked toward him.

"Thank you!"

"..."

Hawk said nothing, just raised an eyebrow while looking at Dr. Connor.

Beside him, Gwen asked puzzledly, "Doctor, why did you want to kill me?"

She couldn't understand.

If Dr. Connor was targeting her because of the Williamsburg Bridge incident, he should look for Spider-Man.

If he needed blood, he should find Hawk.

So why focus on her?

Leaned against the wall, Dr. Connor, who had no strength left, listened to Gwen's question and chuckled.

But with his chest heaving, a bit of blood appeared on his pale face, and he spat out a mouthful of blood, his breath become extremely weak.

On the verge of passing away, Dr. Connor uttered his final words.

"I don't know either."

"Maybe..."

"I was bewitched by a demon."

"Sorry..."

"..."

"Thud!"

After saying these words with difficulty, Dr. Connor's single left arm fell to the ground, emitting a clear, striking sound.

Dr. Connor, dead!

Hawk watched this scene and withdrew his gaze from Dr. Connor's body, turning to Spider Spirit and saying, "Aren't you leaving?"

Peter, still shocked by defeating Dr. Connor with a single punch, snapped back to reality and looked at Hawk.

"What about you?"

"The person was killed by Spider Spirit, what does it have to do with me, Hawk?"

"I'm not Spider Spirit."

"What about your spider web..."

"I'm leaving first."

Without any wasted words, Peter turned, shot out a spider web, did a flip in the air, broke through the glass window on the ceiling with his feet, crawled out, and vanished from Hawk and Gwen's sight.

At this moment.

Gwen realized something and, exclaiming in shock, pulled Hawk and ran towards the library's surveillance room downstairs.

"No, the surveillance."

"Don't worry, it didn't capture anything."

"Ah."

"The place where I struck was in a blind spot, you can only see Dr. Lizard flying out, not who made the move."

Hawk smiled as he explained while being pulled downstairs by Gwen.

It might be destiny.

He was really unconcerned about exposure; he hadn't realized the area was a blind spot until after he made the move.

So it's not his problem.

Maybe God thinks it's not time for him to be exposed.

If God exists.

Half an hour later.

The New York Police Department personnel carried out the already dead, cold body of Dr. Connor from the library.

Chief George Stacy from the Manhattan Nineteen District had also arrived at the scene.

"Gwen!"

George rushed straight to Gwen after stepping out of the car and hugged her tightly, "Thank God you're okay."

"Dad."

After breaking free from George's embrace, Gwen glanced at Hawk, then pulled Hawk's right hand and said to George, "It was Hawk who protected me."

George looked at Hawk.

Hawk courteously greeted him.

"Mr. Stacy."

"Thank you."

Unlike the last time when he ignored Hawk, George nodded slightly and thanked Hawk.

Hawk smiled and said, "It's what I should do."

George said nothing, glanced at Gwen and Hawk holding hands in front of him, and then said to Gwen, "Call Helen, the news said Midtown High School was attacked by Lizard People, she's worried."

Gwen suddenly remembered that she had forgotten to call her mom, exclaimed, and hurriedly took out her phone to dial her mother, Helen.

After Gwen went aside to make the call, George stood by Hawk, looking at Dr. Connor being bagged as a corpse not far away, "So Dr. Lizard is Dr. Connor, but what was he doing at school?"

Hawk's heart stirred, he shook his head with no expression, "I don't know."

He was thinking about the words Dr. Connor uttered before his death.

Bewitched by a demon.

Good God.

What kind of demon could bewitch Dr. Connor to ignore Spider-Man, who battled him on the Williamsburg Bridge, and also ignore Hawk, whose blood seemed crucial to him, but make Gwen his primary target even though she's harmless?

It makes no sense.

Unless this demon isn't a proper demon.

Hawk thought silently in his heart.

Unfortunately...

Dr. Connor is dead, and this question might never be answered.

Soon.

After Gwen finished reassuring her mom Helen, she came over relaxed, naturally took Hawk's arm, "I finished telling mom I'm safe."

George's peripheral vision caught this natural gesture of his daughter, and his mouth twitched secretly, then decided to leave.

No choice, he feared that he couldn't hold back and might shoot Hawk.

Another half an hour passed, with the departure of the New York Police Department's Queens division and Chief George Stacy from the Nineteen District, Midtown High School also announced an early dismissal today.

The students, who were still in shock from Spider-Man's battle with Lizard People, instantly snapped out of it upon hearing this decision, cheered that the school was wise, and ran like wild horses towards the parking lot.

Hawk shook his head, lazy to think further about Dr. Connor's motives.

Dead is dead.

Thinking more is useless.

Weekend.

Because it's the weekend, Hawk stayed in his new apartment, connected his girlfriend's gifted personal cell phone to the hotspot of a personal computer he got from Skye, surfing the internet.

He planned to take advantage of the weekend to rest and search online to see if he could sell the five war trophies collected when he defeated Chitauri Soldiers hidden under his bed.

He had to sell them.

He needs to find a way to make money; otherwise, he might not even have the money for a suit to attend the graduation dance.

Although theoretically, he shouldn't lack money now.

But...

The biggest evil thought Spider Spirit had after being blackened by venom was to buy a discounted suit.

Hawk felt morally inferior to the First Generation Spider Spirit, yet at the very least, he shouldn't be too far behind.

While he was browsing for channels to make the sale.

Outside the window came a sudden sound.

Hawk looked up.

The Spider Spirit he was just considering was outside on the emergency escape, peering inside through his window.

"..."
