Chapter 118: Your Dragon is Crying
Number 39: Hope ATK: 2500
The revived Hope returned to the field in its original form, once again standing before Yūga Hōzumi and facing Crystal Wing as an equal.
"Attack Position? Are you ignoring my Crystal Wing?" Yugo said with a wave of his hand. "Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon, attack Hope!"
"I activate the effect of Hope! When any monster declares an attack, I detach one Xyz Material from this card to negate that attack! Moon Shield!"
Facing the ferocious Crystal Wing, Hope leaned forward. The golden orbs circling its body flashed, and its wings transformed into a shield, blocking the great dragon's dive. A gentle radiance formed a barrier of light, stopping Crystal Wing in its tracks.
"Tch, so that's its effect," Yugo muttered, clicking his tongue.
"Then, I'll end my turn."
"At this moment, the effects of Speedroid Taketomborg and Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon wear off, returning Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon's ATK to 4000."

After Yugo declared the end of his turn, Yūga Hōzumi didn't immediately make a move. Instead, he deliberately slowed his D-Wheel, and once Yugo caught up, he turned to look at him.
"You really want to participate in that Friendship Cup, don't you?" Yūga Hōzumi asked.
"Of course. Reaching the top in the Friendship Cup, becoming King, and then escaping from the quagmire of the bottom echelons – that's always been Rin's and my dream," Yugo said.
"Are your dreams really that cheap?" Yūga Hōzumi said bluntly. "What's the point of honing your dueling skills day after day, just to become a dog for The Top Echelons?"
"What did you say?" Yugo raged.
"During the days of being oppressed by The Top Echelons, didn't you ever want to use your talents to do something for the Commoners who, like you, struggled to survive under their oppression?" Yūga Hōzumi asked loudly.
"What does that have to do with me?" Yugo said. "If they can do it, then they should challenge the King and take his place!"
"But there's only one King's position!" Yūga Hōzumi said. "How many duelists filled with hope just like you will become sacrifices on the path to that so-called throne?"
"What's ridiculous is that the path to kingship you aspire to is nothing more than a dog-eat-dog farce in the eyes of The Top Echelons. Do you think they'll respect the person who ultimately sits on the throne? No, they'll just mock this so-called 'King' behind his back."
"Look at the so-called King, just a pitiful wretch desperately scrambling for the scraps we throw out!"
"Enough!" Yūga Hōzumi's successive, heart-piercing words caused Yugo's mind to reel.
"You got that dragon of yours by a stroke of luck, didn't you? A powerful monster like this isn't something a Commoner like you could easily obtain." Yūga Hōzumi's tone shifted as he looked up at the great dragon soaring in the sky.
"Besides you, have you ever seen another duelist control this dragon?"
"When I was just a child, Clear Wing was delivered into my hands by the sea breeze at the coast," Yugo said, looking at the great dragon soaring in the sky with a nostalgic expression. "But so what? Clear Wing chose me. Doesn't that prove I have what it takes to walk the path to becoming King?"
"Are you kidding me?" Yūga Hōzumi interrupted bluntly. "Your dragon commands the very winds of freedom, yet you willingly put on shackles to become a performing monkey for others. Is this how you repay Clear Wing for choosing you?"
"I..." Yugo was speechless. In the sky, Crystal Wing stopped, letting out mournful cries.
"See? Your dragon is crying!" Yūga Hōzumi said. "Wake up! I once heard a saying: 'With great power comes great responsibility.' Think carefully about what it truly means for your dragon to have chosen you!"
"My turn! I draw!" With that, Yūga Hōzumi drew a card and began his turn.
"I activate the Spell Card, Overlay Rebirth! I target one Xyz Monster on the field and attach this card to it as an Xyz Material."
A golden orb of light flew from Yūga Hōzumi's hand, settling beside Hope.
"Next, I can Xyz Summon this card by using a Rank 4 'Hope' monster I control as the material!" Yūga Hōzumi announced, taking a card from his D-Wheel's Extra Deck.
Beneath Hope's feet, a swirling galaxy of brilliant golden light slowly formed. Holy light bathed Hope's armor, and within its radiance, Hope began to transform.
"The first light born from the dawn of the universe! In the name of hope, cut down the evil that lies ahead! Shining Rank-Up Xyz Change! Descend, Rank 5! Number S39: Hope the Lightning!"
A new form of Hope descended from the light, wielding a longsword, its wings crackling with electricity.
Number S39: Hope the Lightning ATK: 2500
"I activate the Continuous Spell, Xyz Change Tactics! When a 'Hope' monster is Xyz Summoned, I pay 500 Life Points to draw one card!"
Yūga Hōzumi LP: 3000 → 2500
"I activate the Spell Card, Zexal Trust!"
"I target one 'Zexal Weapon' monster in my Graveyard and Special Summon it! Arise, ZW - Pegasus Twin Saber!"
"I activate the effect of ZW - Pegasus Twin Saber! I target one 'Hope' monster I control and equip this card to it from my field. It gains 1000 ATK!"
The steel warhorse with pure white wings neighed once before transforming into a longsword and flying into the hand of Hope the Lightning.
"That's the weapon that negates monster effects, isn't it? Not a chance! I activate Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon's effect!" Yugo quickly countered. "Once per turn, when another monster's effect is activated, I can negate the activation and destroy it!"
A rainbow-colored holy light shot from Crystal Wing's wings once more, striking the longsword forged from the Pegasus and shattering it.
"When a monster is destroyed by this effect, Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon gains ATK equal to the destroyed monster's original ATK."
Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon ATK: 4000 → 5000
"But now, you've used Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon's effect for this turn," Yūga Hōzumi said calmly. "I summon Dododo Witch in Attack Position!"
"When Dododo Witch is successfully summoned, I can Special Summon one other 'Dododo' monster from my hand in Attack Position or face-down Defense Position!"
"I Special Summon Dododo Driver from my hand in Attack Position!"
"The turn Dododo Driver is Special Summoned by the effect of a 'Dododo' monster, I can target one 'Dododo' monster I control and either increase or decrease its Level by 1. I can use this effect twice per turn!"
"I increase the Levels of both Dododo Witch and Dododo Driver by 1!"
