Faye's POV
"Where are we headed?" I asked, though the destination wasn't what really mattered to me. What I actually wanted to know was if he was okay. The way he carried me through the deep snow, my body pressed against his chest, had to be draining him.
We'd been moving for what felt like hours. I'd lost all sense of time. Part of me desperately wanted to ask if he needed to rest, if he wanted to put me down for a while. But the words wouldn't come. Asking felt too intimate somehow. Maybe even offensive.
So I stuck with the safer question about our destination, even though it wasn't what I really needed to know.
The longer he held me, the more I noticed everything about the way his arms wrapped around me. My back was flush against his solid chest, and each step he took reminded me how secure his hold was, how his warmth cut through the bitter cold slicing at us from every direction.
