The rest of the morning passed in a blur of pain and unyielding tension. Shuyin returned to the cell after breakfast, every step a fresh ordeal. Tank helped her back onto the bottom bunk, and she lay there perfectly still, fighting off waves of nausea and deep exhaustion while her cellmates maintained their silent watch.
The pain medication had worn off completely now, leaving her with nothing to buffer the constant, radiating agony that emanated from her injuries.
The afternoon shift was designated as yard time for the inmates. It was two hours of what the prison administration optimistically called "recreation" in a concrete wasteland surrounded by imposing thirty-foot walls topped with glinting coils of razor wire.
