Atiyama wiped his hands clean on his trousers, the coarse fabric doing little to scrub away the lingering phantom scent of copper and damp earth. He stared down into the mist-choked abyss of the industrial river far below, watching the last ripples of disturbed brush fade into the churning current.
There was no room for hesitation. No looking back. He turned away, adjusting his heavy cloak, and fell back into step beside Kael.
Stepping out from the rear passage, they reconnected with Jory and his elderly grandmother near the mouth of the alley. The old woman was trembling, her initial terror entirely replaced by a profound relief. She stepped forward, her weathered hands reaching out to gently grasp Atiyama's bloodstained sleeve.
"We have nothing of value to offer you, young masters," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You saved my grandson's life today, and perhaps ours too. May the Sovereign's Light keep your paths clear of shadows."
Jory stood just behind her, rubbing his bruised chest, his eyes wide with a mix of shock and burning respect. "We won't forget this. If you ever need herbs, poultices, or anything hidden away, you come to us. We'll keep our mouths shut about today. I swear it on my blood."
"Just keep your heads down and stick to the story," Kael said, offering a grounded nod. "Stay alive, kid."
With that, the duo turned their backs on the alley, blending seamlessly into the chaotic, sprawling arteries of the lower terraces.
As they walked, a crystalline chime suddenly vibrated directly inside Atiyama's cerebral cortex. A translucent blue interface flickered into existence in his peripheral vision, sharp and luminous against the dim light of the street.
[ SYSTEM ALERT: Combat Encounter Concluded. ]
[Targets Eliminated (Self):] 2 x Mortals (Black-Tide Grunts).
[Targets Eliminated (Party):] 1 x Tier-1 Adept Cultivator (Black-Tide Enforcer).
[Combat Evaluation:] Sub-optimal execution.
[Reward Credited:] 150 EXP, 3 Low-Grade Spirit Coins (Added to System Balance).
Atiyama expected the usual digital eye-roll, but the text lingered, shifting into a smoother cascade of data.
[System Status Update:] EXP successfully integrated into core framework architecture. Current accumulation progress: 150 / 1,000 EXP toward System Level 2. Reaching higher system tiers will unlock advanced auxiliary functions, tactical overlays, and enhanced defensive protocols designed to minimize future bodily trauma.
[Asset Storage Notification:] 3 Low-Grade Spirit Coins credited to your internal system ledger. Reminder: Spirit Coins exist strictly within the system's digital architecture and are reserved exclusively for internal system acquisitions, upgrades, and manifests. They possess no physical form in the external world. Attempting to spend a system token at a physical black-market counter will yield zero results, host. Spend your internal ledger wisely.
Despite the dry jab, Atiyama felt a strange sort of reassurance. The system wasn't just an arbitrary scoreboard. It was an adaptive tool tailored to elevate him if he could survive the meat-grinder of Val-Kreth. Keep me breathing, huh? Atiyama thought back, a faint smirk forming beneath his mask. Deal.
"You good?" Kael asked, glancing sideways as they wove through a cluster of chaotic merchant stalls.
"Yeah," Atiyama muttered, dismissing the interface with a subtle twitch of his eye. "Just processing."
"Get used to it," Kael chuckled, leading the way toward a narrower corridor. "The lower rings are a pressure cooker. Let's get out of the open before the Syndicate realizes their patrol missed a check-in."
Ahead of them, the deafening din of the marketplace was pierced by the amplified voice of a street-crier standing atop an overturned wagon, frantically waving a stack of Qi-stamped parchment that glowed with shifting ink.
"Fresh impressions! Read it here!" the crier bellowed, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "Sovereign Sect expedition ambushed in the Apex Wilds! Three elite disciples found dead in the primordial canopy! Beast migrations threatening the Azure Steps! Buy a scroll, know the dangers!"
Atiyama glanced up past the chaotic bustle of the lower market, his gaze tracking upward. It was the eternal, jarring paradox of Val-Kreth.
Down here, the city was a sprawling, grimy maze of soot-stained brick, desperate mortals scraping by on scraps, and brutal faction extortion. But if you looked past the filth, the city transformed into an impossible fantasy spectacle. Above the low-hanging smog layer, massive alabaster towers pierced through iridescent clouds of ambient Qi. Entire landmasses, floating islands tethered by shimmering bridges of solid light, drifted lazily in the sky, cascading pure liquid spiritual energy down in sparkling waterfalls that dissolved into mist before hitting the slums.
Yet, even higher than the floating estates of the ultra-wealthy, the city abruptly ended. The true peak of the mountain was entirely untamed, known as the Apex Wilds, a savage primordial forest choked with wild mutating Qi where only apex predators and grandmasters dared tread.
"Don't stare too long," Kael warned sharply, grabbing Atiyama's shoulder and violently yanking him out of the main thoroughfare.
They ducked into the shadows of a massive steam-vent just as a heavy, armored squad of Syndicate enforcers marched past their previous position, their eyes scanning the crowd with lethal intent.
"Main roads are crawling now," Kael whispered, pressing his back against the damp stone wall. He gestured to a narrow, jagged fissure in the mountain's solid rock face, partially obscured by hanging vines and old debris. "We're taking a root-vein."
"A root-vein?" Atiyama asked, eyeing the pitch-black opening.
"A smuggler's shortcut," Kael explained, prying back the heavy foliage to reveal a sloping subterranean tunnel carved deep into the living rock. "Most fools think you have to pay the toll and walk through the silk-draped gates of the middle rings just to reach the upper forests or traverse the mountain. They don't realize this mountain is completely porous. Old beast tunnels, ancient drainage chutes, and natural fissures weave from the very bottom of the slums all the way up into the deep woods. We take this, we bypass the entire middle-ring checkpoint."
Atiyama inhaled the cool, earthy air rising from the tunnel, smelling faint traces of damp stone and distant wilderness. He drew his iron dagger, stepping into the darkness right behind Kael.
Into the Vein
The air inside the tunnel dropped by ten degrees instantly, thick with the scent of wet shale and lingering mineral dust. They moved in silence for a few hundred paces, navigating the jagged slope by the faint bioluminescent moss clinging to the cavern ceiling.
Because the root-veins served as the massive subterranean highway for thousands of desperate souls eking out an existence at the bottom of Val-Kreth, the network was far from empty. In a world where Val-Kreth possessed no centralized kingdom or government, every single district, terrace, and tunnel was carved up and governed by whatever dominant faction held the turf. Some areas were controlled by proud clans, others by militant sects or mercantile guilds, while the lower rings and deep corridors were carved up by criminal syndicates and local street gangs.
Amidst this fractured landscape, a staggering number of outcasts, smugglers, and scavengers knew these dark arteries inside and out. They carved out clandestine pockets and hidden survival outposts deep within the mountain's core. These tucked-away alcoves were magnets for those trading in illicit contraband, stolen artifacts, and unfavorable goods that the ruling authorities routinely clamped down on. Away from the prying eyes of rival enforcers and the heavy boot of whichever faction claimed jurisdiction overhead, thousands of outcasts gravitated toward these underground pockets to rest, sleep, and perform their shadier business safely in the shadows under much less scrutiny.
After navigating the twisting corridors for nearly an hour, the path opened up into a wider, torch-lit cavern. A makeshift trading post and rest stop had been established against the jagged stone walls, consisting of stacked crates, tattered canvas tents, and a crude wooden counter manned by a scarred broker wrapped in furs. A few weary travelers sat on overturned barrels nearby, resting their legs in the humid subterranean air.
Kael led Atiyama straight to the counter. Without a word, Kael tossed a heavy, dark metal coin onto the rough wood, an Arcane Gilt etched with low-frequency geometric patterns. In exchange, the broker slid a dense, wax-wrapped lumina-pellet across the counter along with a small flask of filtered water.
Atiyama lingered a step back, watching the transaction closely. His gaze dropped to the physical coin Kael had just spent in the real world, mentally contrasting it with the digital Spirit Coins locked inside his system ledger. "What was that?"
Kael paused, tucking the lumina-pellet into his collar and taking a pull from the water flask. A single eyebrow arched upward beneath his hood, a flicker of realization touching his expression. "An Arcane Gilt. Right, I forgot you crawled out of that backward little border settlement before all this started. Figures you wouldn't recognize a Low-Grade Arcane Gilt when you see one."
Atiyama shook his head slightly under his mask. "Pocket change wasn't high on my village's curriculum."
Kael let out a dry breath. "Figures. The whole city runs on 'em, kid. Low-Grade Arcane Gilts for street-level grinds and black-market nodes, Exceptional Arcane Gilts for the middle-ring syndicates, and High-Grades if you ever want to buy yourself a seat on a floating island. Real physical currency for a real physical hellhole."
Atiyama absorbed the information in silence, filing it away. His system's Spirit Coins were entirely separate, functioning as internal digital currency reserved solely for system rewards, manifests, and upgrades, completely invisible to the physical world.
"Come on," Kael muttered, finishing his water and turning back toward the ascending path. "We've still got a long climb before we hit the tree line."
Far Above the Lower Terraces
Miles away and thousands of feet higher, on one of the opulent mid-level floating islands known as the Silk Pavilion, a very different scene was unfolding.
Inside a sprawling, open-air mansion draped in heavy crimson silk, a heavily scarred man sat cross-legged on a cushion of woven spirit-grass. This was Vane, an Enforcer Captain for the Black-Tide Syndicate who had shattered the mortal limits to become a terrifying Stage 2 Bone-Forging Master. In front of him sat a massive, circular mahogany table covered in hundreds of glowing, thumb-sized jade slips, each one bound to the life-force and soul-resonance of a Syndicate operative working the lower rings.
Crack. Crack. Shatter.
Vane's eyes snapped open. Three jade slips on the outer edge of the table had suddenly fractured, dissolving instantly into fine gray ash.
He didn't flinch. Grunts died in the lower rings every day in scuffles, gang wars, and bad drug deals. It was simply the cost of doing business in a city built on blood. Lazily, Vane flicked two fingers over the pile of gray dust, casting a standard trace-resonance spell to pull up the final moments recorded by the soul-jade. Usually, it showed a clumsy street brawl or the heavy footprint of a rival gang's brute.
Instead, the ash swirled violently, projecting a shimmering holographic playback of the alleyway into the air.
Vane watched the flash of Kael's amber-plasma blade cut down the lead enforcer. A cold sneer touched Vane's lips. A Tier-1 Master rogue slumming it in the outer slums. Annoying, but manageable.
Then, the holographic projection shifted to the second attacker, the masked kid.
Vane leaned forward, his scarred brow furrowing into a deep crease.
The projection stuttered. The soul-jade struggled to render Atiyama. Normally, when a cultivator kills another cultivator with a soul Jade, their and surrounding cultivatiors unique arcane signatures are stamped onto the victim's soul-matrix to be later retrieve by the soul jade. But this kid had no signature at all. To the tracking jade, it was as if a ghost had materialized out of the ether, presenting a complete, unnatural void in the flow of cultivation energy. Yet, layered directly beneath that void, the ash flickered with a violent, fragmented glitch, displaying a bizarre split-framework anomaly that defied every known law of the cultivation world.
Vane's breath hitched. In his eighty years of life, rising through the brutal ranks of Val-Kreth as a Bone-Forging Master, he had never seen an energy signature like that.
With a swift, predatory motion, Vane swept the gray ash off the table, funneling it carefully into a small, lead-sealed glass vial. A plasma-wielding rogue was a minor nuisance, but a ghost with an impossible, fractured arcane signature operating right under his nose?
That was a secret the Syndicate's upper echelons would pay an absolute fortune to dissect.
Unbeknownst to Atiyama and Kael as they climbed the dark, winding root-vein deep inside the mountain's core, a hunter with resources far beyond a street-level patrol had just locked onto their trail.
