Chapter 265 - Mega Gardevoir

Hydro Pump struck at point-blank range. As a Water-type ultimate, its power rivalled Flare Blitz and Brave Bird, equal in recoil, yet undeniably devastating. Blastoise's Mega Launcher amplified the blast by a full third, pushing it beyond even High-Pressure Pump.

Rock-type Aggron was weak to Water, and even its famed defences could not endure Blastoise's trait-boosted assault. The nearly one-ton titan crumpled. As the curtain of water fell, Aggron lay motionless on the field.

"Aggron is unable to battle, Blastoise wins!"

This was no casual skirmish. It was the Indigo Plateau Conference, Top 16. Ash's opponent, Conway, had been a title favourite, a data-driven strategist who'd deployed the rare and deadly Trick Room. Yet Ash had still pulled off a two-KO sweep. The power of Mega Evolution, and of this Blastoise, spoke for itself.

'That Hydro Pump must be brushing elite or champion level, a leap across an entire major tier in raw force.' Steven mused, thumb grazing his chin.

During the match, Steven had queried the Elite Four on Mega Evolution. "Beyond-limit evolution" lived up to its name: greater than standard evolution, temporary, yet in battle stronger than Gigantamax. While Gigantamax lasted mere heartbeats, Mega Evolution persisted as long as stamina held. Once a Pokémon's energy guttered out, defeat followed, whether or not the form collapsed first.

To Steven, the system outshone both Gigantamax and Z-Moves. It looked spectacular too, though what truly mattered was the ability to surpass limits. A Pokémon hitting a wall could experience the next tier mid-Mega, making breakthroughs easier both in and out of battle.

'Mega Blastoise is fearsome', Lance conceded, 'but this is its ceiling. Hydro Pump punishes the user, and after absorbing that Heavy Slam, its stamina must be scraping the bottom.'

He was right. On the field, Blastoise panted heavily, fresh cracks spiderwebbing across its shell. Between tanking Heavy Slam and driving Hydro Pump into a near-ton opponent, the stacked recoil had worsened every fracture.

Still, its haul was stellar: two knockouts, one against an equal-tier foe, one a tier above, and that seemingly small gap represented a chasm.

Without Trick Room, the fight would have been far easier. Now the warped space was fading, its duration finally spent. Two Pokémon down and Trick Room gone, Conway's situation looked dire.

He adjusted his glasses and recalled Aggron, face carefully blank, though his frustration was plain. Data players despised surprises, and this match had slipped entirely from his models.

Yet as Aggron vanished into its ball, Blastoise's body glowed, shrank, and reverted, plain Blastoise once more.

Conway blinked, then grinned. "So your this evolution isn't permanent." His voice dripped with newfound confidence. "Trading away your ace for two knockouts? I'll take that deal."

Two-for-one and no more Trick Room, by every metric, Conway was behind. But he spun it as victory, hoping to rattle his opponent.

Ash paid no heed. He raised a Poké Ball. "Thanks, Blastoise. Rest up, the team will carry it from here."

He clipped the ball to his belt. Recalling now wasn't optimal; Blastoise could still lob a move or two. But Stealth Rock littered the field, and a single misstep would finish the turtle. Better to preserve that last spark of life than wring out a final, futile attack.

When a battle could continue, Ash let it. And if that final spark were truly needed, the Pokémon would choose to stay on its own. Blastoise knew its trainer had a roster of dependable partners, even without squeezing out every last drop of strength, his companions would secure the win. That certainty let it rest easy as the red light swallowed it whole.

"With Stealth Rock on the field, it won't survive re-entry. You might as well have burned its remaining stamina," Conway said, pushing his glasses up with clinical detachment.

"Doesn't matter." Ash's grin was easy, unshakeable. "My partners can finish this without Blastoise lifting a finger." He palmed his next Poké Ball without waiting for Conway to reveal his choice. There was no need to hesitate. "You're up, Gardevoir!"

Gardevoir materialized on the field.

In an instant, Invisible shards of Stealth Rock grazed her on entry, but Rock wasn't super effective against her typing, the damage was negligible.

The crowd, however, barely noticed the chip damage. They were too busy losing their minds.

A Shiny Gardevoir. In a Top 16 match. From a trainer who'd debuted six months ago.

The stadium erupted. Gasps rippled through the stands, followed by a swell of excited chatter.

Somewhere in the upper rows, a guy stood up and screamed something about his waifu

A Shiny Gardevoir was the kind of thing most trainers went their entire careers without seeing, let alone owning. The fact that a rookie who'd debuted six months ago had one on his roster felt almost unfair.

It was Gardevoir's first appearance on a major stage. She'd battled Blaine once before, but that fight had never been broadcast. So for the watching world, this was the reveal, and the reaction matched.

Across the field, Conway went still. Behind his glasses, something between envy and disbelief flickered across his face.

'A Blastoise that could Mega Evolve and a Shiny Gardevoir? Forget skill, this kid's luck was absurd.'

He swallowed his irritation and made his choice. "Dusknoir, you're back out."

The Ghost-type reformed on the field. Type advantage against Gardevoir, and more importantly, Conway needed Trick Room back up. Without it, losing Blastoise or not, he was fighting uphill.

"Your Blastoise was impressive, I'll give you that," Conway called across the field, adjusting his glasses with practiced calm. "But I traded two Pokémon from the lower half of my roster for your ace. The advantage is still mine."

Ash's expression shifted into something Conway couldn't quite read. A small, lopsided grin.

'Fifth', Ash thought. 'Blastoise ranks about fifth on my team.'

Which meant four stronger Pokémon were still in play. And Mega Evolution wasn't Blastoise's trick alone.

He glanced down at the Key Stone in his hand. Its glow had returned.

Under normal circumstances, a Key Stone needed time to recharge between uses, one Mega Evolution per battle was the practical limit. But Ash carried Tokiwa Power, and the life energy it produced could feed directly back into the stone. Blastoise's fight had bought enough time. The Key Stone was live again.

"Gardevoir." Ash raised the stone, and light erupted from his fist. "Show them what you really look like."

The Key Stone blazed. Gardevoir's own Mega Stone answered, and ribbons of multicoloured energy spiralled around her body.

Conway's composure cracked. His jaw tightened, eyes widening behind his lenses. 'Another one? Are you serious?'

Gigantamax was locked to once per match. This kid had just triggered a second Mega Evolution like it was nothing.

The light burst apart, and Gardevoir stood transformed.

Gone was the pristine white. In its place, black. A sweeping, voluminous gown the colour of midnight, elegant and severe. Her hair kept its shiny blue, but her body and arms had darkened completely. Where she'd looked untouchable before, almost sacred, this form was something else entirely. Regal. Dangerous. A queen stepping out of shadow.

The crowd went loud again. Half of them were gushing over the design. The other half were arguing.

"Hold on, you can Mega Evolve twice in one match? How is that fair?"

"Gigantamax gets one shot and it's region-locked. This has no limit?"

"If Mega Evolution really works like that, Gigantamax is dead on arrival."
