Emily's POV
I know a message has been blocked when it bounces back with that particular kind of silence. Not a failed delivery. Not a network error. Just nothing. The digital way of a door slammed right in your face.
My messages to Victor had been doing that for four days.
I sat with it longer than I should have, turning my phone over in my hands like the answer was on the back of it somewhere. Sharon had gotten to his number. Of course she had. She had gotten to everything and I had never stood a chance.
I called Jenkins instead.
"Has he said anything?" I asked. I didn't need to specify who.
Jenkins paused in the way he did when the answer wasn't the one I wanted. "He hasn't said much of anything. I've tried to bring it up twice and both times he's redirected the conversation entirely. You know how he is."
"So nothing."
"Not yet. Emily, give me a little more time."
I gave him time. That was the one thing I had in abundance.
