Chapter 2 - God of Games Ch2

I spent the next few nights working in my realm, I wanted everything to be perfect before I allowed anyone in. I spent the days improving myself and my nights were used to build my kingdom. No that sounds ostentatious, I really didn't want to steal the name Oasis but I couldn't think of anything cooler so it would have to do. But finally it was the day I was going to connect my realm to reality. So far I had only finished the main hub and the first half of one game but it was good enough for now. The Oasis really lived up to its name, a place to relax, it had food, drink and various places to just hang out. Sure there were various activities that people could do while hanging out, like playing board games, reading books, and many other normal activities. The game was where I put in the most time, at first I wanted to just create completely immersive VR versions of old games but then a thought hit me.

Why don't I just mix the best parts of various games and use that? After all there wasn't any sort of copyright here and I could design each game however I wanted to. So I did, but I took it easy for the first game, I started with Minecraft and added a bunch of elements from Terraria to it. The easy part was adding all the materials and landscapes but I was having trouble with the bosses. Now it had a ton more materials and recipes, it was a little difficult when both games had the same material that worked differently in each game but I worked it out. It was a good thing that dream time and real time were so different otherwise I would have spent months working on this. It even had a better storyline now, not just before the Elder Dragon and after the Elder Dragon, of course that was still part of it but there was so much more to it now.I completely fleshed out the game before the ender dragon and added a lot more build up to that boss but after the dragon was a little harder.

I never really liked the Minecraft story and Terraria always seemed kinda forced to me so I added a ton more details and a solid storyline. Now when you go from boss to boss there is a reason for the order and benefits and consequences for winning each battle. Combining the two games really got me thinking of future games as well. I knew I wanted to mix various aspects of different games into a single adventure but it would take a lot of work to make sure it worked well together. I was going to be very busy for the foreseeable future. But now that I was finished with my hub and at least part of the first game I was curious to see how it would connect to the real world. After I woke up and started to get ready for the day I kept checking my phone to see if anyone had visited it yet. Confused? Well let me explain. So far I had only made one change in reality, I had connected the realm to an app on my phone.

On the app I could see anything I wanted to, from the amount of people, to a bird's eye view or a first person point of view using the eyes of any person in the realm. But the app wasn't just for looking over the realms, I could also use it to enter the realm while I was awake. I was not satisfied being only able to visit my realm while I was asleep. I was a little paranoid that Stark or Reed would be able to hack in somehow so I made sure it worked the same way as my shield. People could still see and interact with it but to any outside source it wasn't there. Turns out it was such a good idea that the realm decided to use that method to connect itself to reality. And not just for phones, the moment I awoke a program appeared on every computer that was advanced enough to connect to the internet. For the first few minutes most people didn't even notice it, some of the ones who did tried to delete it.

On the other hand governments and various agencies around the world were freaking out. Somehow someone had hacked into the most protected computers in the world, all of them, at the same time and installed a program that couldn't be removed. It didn't matter if they did a complete system wipe after copying important data (or not, depending on their general intelligence), the program would still be there ready and waiting. On a very special aircraft carrier a certain one eyed pirate was shouting orders from his perch as his minions scurried around him. "I want to know what this is and who did it, and I want to know yesterday! Someone get Stark on the line, this seems like something he could do. Hell he would probably get a kick out of it." An older balding stepped up from behind him and touched one finger to his ear, "Sir, reports are coming in from all over the world. Whatever this is, it isn't just us. They hit everywhere, all at once."

Fury's one eye narrowed and he spun around, his trench coat slicing through the air behind him as he stalked off. He left one last order in a lower volume for only Couldon to hear, "Let me know when you get ahold of Stark, even if I don't think he could do that anymore. But he's our best shot at figuring out what this is. I'll be in my office, the council will want to throw a tantrum and it's better our agents don't realize how truely fucked we are." Coulson nodded and walked off, reports were streaming in through his earpiece, if he got started now he may finish it by this time next year. While those in power around the world were running around like a chicken with its head cut off, some of the more adventurous people were interested in this new app. When the curiosity became too much they opened whatever type of program they had access to.

In every version after they opened the app a screen popped up with two choices, [Dive] and [Help]. After staring at the screen for a second almost all of them clicked the first option, after all who would actually click the help button first? And that was when the real chaos started. Across the world people froze where they were, most simply froze in place wherever they were. On the sidewalk, at home, while working, or even a couple that were on the toilet. Others were luckier and had been relaxing when they chose, they just spaced out. Of course there were a couple unfortunate people that really should have learned before then not to be on your phone and driving at the same time. So a few accidents occurred, but for some reason no one actually died and most of the people who had been driving snapped back to reality a few seconds later. A whole lot a regret, some racing hearts, but only a couple minor injuries and damage to their wallets.

The ones who hadn't been in the car stayed in my realm for longer but they snapped out of it quickly as well. You see when they clicked on Dive their minds were pulled into my realm and they suddenly appeared in a dark space. Let's focus on one person to make this a little easier to understand, and of course it's everyone's favorite guy in the chair, Ned Leeds. Ned was surfing the web on his desktop when he saw a notification that a new app had been downloaded. As any teenager who downloads stuff off the internet knows, when something unknown shows up on your computer you don't just click on it (Not like that you pervs). So he ran a virus scanner to check this new program, unfortunately because of the nature of the program the anti-virus software wasn't actually able to scan it. But at the same time Ned saw a prompt that said the program was virus free, the app could not be detected by outside sources but it would still give him the information he wanted.

It didn't have any viruses so that was the information it sent back, it would even allow him to access the source code. Not that it would really tell him anything, all the code would show was for the app's visuals. Now that his cautiousness had been satisfied he clicked on the app and when he saw the two options he did not hesitate before clicking Dive. In the next moment Ned's body relaxed in the chair while his mind was transported to another realm. In this realm Ned didn't have a body he was just aware of himself, I think therefore I am sort of stuff. As anyone might, he freaked out, "OH MY GOD! AM I DEAD? I AM DEAD! IS THIS HELL? IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE HEAVEN!" The Oasis detected his stress levels rising and he was ejected from the app, and suddenly Ned found himself back in his chair. After spending the next minute touching his body to make sure everything was still there, he looked back at his computer.

Like any child who sticks a fork in a socket, curiosity weighing against fear warred in his mind, due to the fact there was no pain and no permanent harm he decided to try again. But this time caution won out and he clicked on the Ask button instead, he flinched when a new screen popped up. After he realized that he wasn't having another out of body experience he leaned closer to read the message that popped up. [What would you like to know?] The question was kind of hard to answer, not because he had no questions but because he had too many questions. So he went with a simple one to start with, "What just happened to me?" As soon as he typed out his question he realized a computer would not know what just happened to him but before he could try again another prompt popped up below it. [When you clicked Dive your mind was transferred to the intake area of Oasis.]

Due to the program having no contact with anyone besides its Creator it was a little blunt, but it learned as it interacted with more people it became more expressive. For Ned that answer just sparked more questions so he typed out another question, "What is the Oasis?" [Oasis is a kingdom that belongs to the God of Games, in this realm people may interact in a variety of ways.] Even as the program spoke with Ned it also talked with other people around the world, some more… insistent in their questioning, cough..Shield..cough. Back to Ned though, "What do you mean by interact, what can you do in Oasis?" This time the program actually paused for a moment before answering as this question required a longer answer. [In Oasis you can do almost anything, you can partake in food and drink as much as you like without gaining a pound. You can talk with people across the world without the language barrier hampering you, you can even learn about anything you wish if that is your desire.]

[However, the true purpose of Oasis is somewhere you can play games, any game that is in the outside world can be played in Oasis, and that is not all. When the God of Games saw the state of your world he was severely disappointed in the games here, so he made an effort to make you some better entertainment. So far only one has been completed and now it only needs you to enter and experience it yourself. It will be something you will never forget.] At this point Ned was too excited to focus on any of the other questions he might have and instead wanted to play this new game. So without another second of hesitation he went back to the opening screen and clicked on Dive once more. This time when he appeared in the void he did not panic and instead looked around to see what was there. He still didn't have a body but that didn't seem to hamper him in any way, and as he was looking around he saw a white orb behind? him.

When he tried to reach out, merely thinking about reaching out since he still didn't have an arm to do so, suddenly he was in some sort of dressing room and not like the ones at Walmart. Everything in here looked like it belonged in some rich person's house or an antique shop. It wasn't like everything was covered in gold, it just looked nice with everything new and freshly polished so it gleamed in the warm light. Ned still didn't have a body but there was a manikin standing on a platform in front of him, above which there were words flashing [Shape your form]. It took a little bit of experimenting with the thought controls but in less than two minutes he had a man that could have been Captain America's shorter, tanner brother standing in front of him. Once he had the form picked out the message changed and Ned moved on to adding more features to his new self.

By the time he was done the mannequin was even dressed and looked like it wouldn't be out of place on a fitness magazine for nerds. Muscular body, handsome face, but T-shirt with a math joke with an unzipped hoodie over it, jeans that were slightly worn and comfortable shoes. It was a good thing that the thought controls sped things up, otherwise going through all the different settings would have taken forever. And Ned would have gotten bored and just skipped through most of them. While this new body still drew from him as a base it looked very different; it was his most ideal form after all and no one is ever satisfied with how they look. After he finished adding the details about his clothes there was a flash of light and he was standing in a new place, that's right standing. He had a body again! If he spent the next minute exploring the changes of his new and improved body none of the other people that appeared beside him noticed, they were doing the same thing after all.

Once he was done playing with himself Ned looked around, a couple people had finished… examining themselves before him and were now walking up to the different buildings. Each one was different, the styles ranged from medieval taverns to department stores or even small cafes, and they all had a sign above the door that explained what they had inside. One had a cartoonish slab of meat on a bone, another had outlines of a t-shirt and pants, a third had an open book. It went on and on, there were buildings for every kind of food Ned had heard of and a couple that he hadn't, there were arcades, libraries, and even a couple of casinos. With every step he took more possibilities opened up in front of them, it was then that he stopped, the first building with actual words on the sign had appeared, [MineCraft]. Ned tilted his head in curiosity and walked towards the door.

He could see a couple of people had already gone inside and were looking at the different objects displayed around the building. When Ned finally stepped through the door he could suddenly hear soft music playing through the room. It was just on the edge of his hearing so he didn't really pay attention to it other than a small smile. It was a very peaceful instrumental piece. The objects on the walls were much more interesting anyway, there were two crowns that wobbled whenever someone stepped near them. There was also a large honeycomb, a few mechanical doodads, what looked like a couple of ancient artifacts, a plant, and a black egg. There were also weapons, lots of weapons, some of which didn't look like they could actually be used in a practical way. And at the other end of the building, opposite of the entrance, there was a large archway that was filled with an aurora spanning a multitude of colors.

There were a couple of people standing around the arch, but none of them had stepped through yet, and as time passed more people came in to explore the store. Some of course were distracted by the shiny objects but most soon gathered around the arch. No one wanted to be the first to step through, so Ned pushed his way through the crowd and was soon standing in front of the arch. With one last deep breath he took the plunge and stepped through, at the same moment in the real world I got a notification on my phone. [The first player has entered Minecraft.] I smiled at the news and looked over the other information the app gave me. I didn't want it to notify me everytime something happened so I set it to do so for significant events. I decided to use one of the abilities of my app and watch as the first player explored this new world.

I made the beginning of the game pretty easy so people could get used to playing a game with your body instead of a controller or keyboard. I also decided to keep the blocky texture for the game, but there was a way to change that later in the game. One of the bigger benefits to the game is you wouldn't have to deal with any physical problems you might have in the real world. So most would do what Ned did and run around, chopping down trees and digging holes, it was only when the first night fell that the fun really started. In Terraria monsters can spawn as soon as you enter the game, but I liked the Minecraft version more for this exact moment. "AHHHH! IT'S GONNA EAT ME!" I was dying of laughter as Ned literally ran into a Zombie after climbing out of a hole he dug. Once he realized that it was actually easy to outrun the monster he calmed down and started the classic punch until it's dead… again.

Then he got kind of cocky, I made it so zombies were easy to defeat, except the babies of course, so it was understandable. He killed a couple more of the undead and even a small slime before he ran into his first real challenge, a skeleton. One moment he was relishing the beating he was giving out and the next he had an arrow sticking out of his shoulder. One thing I had been unsure about was the pain setting, I wanted the games to be realistic but no one liked getting hurt. So I went for the middle ground, the arrow would have felt like a nasty pinch. Not too bad but enough to motivate him to avoid being hit again. Finding the skeleton was another problem, he still hadn't beaten the zombie and now he had to run away to find what was shooting him. One thing I added to the game was the fact that EXP would feel good when it was collected, nothing like a high or anything but more like the first bite of a good meal or finishing a good book.

Enough to want to feel it again, so he would not want to run the risk of the half dead again zombie wandering off before he could get that EXP. But the second arrow flying past his leg made the choice for him and he rushed off in the direction the arrow came from. He looked around for a minute but before he could get too far a strange hissing noise was heard, he looked around to find what was making it but the trees blocked a lot of his view. In the next second it was too late and the world exploded and Ned found himself at the YOU DIED screen. I switched to watching some of the other people that entered afterwards but the first one was by far the funniest. The rest seemed much more reserved than him but I hoped they would still enjoy all the work I put into building this world for them. With that last thought I smiled and put my phone away, there would be plenty of time to watch more later, but for now I had other things I needed to do.
