Although the mortality rate had been reduced, death within the game still existed.
As long as this issue remained unresolved, the game could not be officially released.
Xu Dan handed the completed game over to Banner. After reviewing it, Banner fell into deep thought.
"A game this powerful… and yet in the end, it's dragged down by my own shortcomings…"
Xu Dan reached out and patted him on the shoulder."After all this time, have you figured out where the problem lies?"
Hearing this, Banner froze slightly, then gave a bitter smile.
"Just like you said. All my experiments have been conducted on mice. Even if mice can endure longer, they aren't human. What would really happen to people in the end… I honestly don't know."
"I see," Xu Dan nodded. "So what you're missing is a living test subject, right?"
"I never said that!"
Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters
Xu Dan was already extremely familiar with the route here.
Back when he was developing the virtual training chamber, he had visited so often that—if there were no other cars on the road—he could probably drive here with his eyes closed.
Returning after such a long time gave him the strange feeling of a student revisiting their alma mater.
Of course, this was Liva's alma mater, not his.
Passing by the computer room, the gaming atmosphere inside was still as lively as ever—a good sign.
But this time, Xu Dan didn't stop to interact with the group of kids. Instead, he headed straight for Professor X's office.
"Xu Dan, your sudden visit surprises me," Professor X said warmly. "Is there something I can help you with?"
Looking at the bald man before him, Xu Dan's thoughts turned quietly. He wondered what effect a telepathic mutant might have on that kind of helmet experiment.
Then he reconsidered—if something went wrong and the old man got electrocuted, wouldn't he become a sinner in the eyes of the entire school?
"Professor," Xu Dan said with a smile, "there are indeed quite a few things I need your help with. It all depends on whether you're willing."
"I've said it before," Professor X replied decisively. "If you need help, the X-Men are always ready."
Seeing this, Xu Dan didn't beat around the bush.
"Professor X, to be honest, I need Wolverine—Logan—to cooperate with me on something. Of course, he'll be paid. Generously."
"You're looking for Logan?" Professor X was momentarily puzzled.
If Xu Dan had asked for Cyclops or Storm, that would have made sense.
But suddenly asking for Logan?
Seeing the confusion on Professor X's face, Xu Dan explained:
"I want Logan to assist in an experiment. I understand his abilities very well, and I can guarantee his safety."
Professor X fell silent and turned his gaze toward the door.
The next moment, a middle-aged man with a rugged face pushed the door open and walked in.
Xu Dan recognized him instantly.
Wolverine.
A mutant even older than Professor X himself.
At this moment, however, there was no trace of friendliness in Wolverine's eyes.
"Hey, kid," Logan said gruffly. "You keep talking like I'm already working for you. Did I agree to that?"
In truth, Wolverine had only just arrived at the school.
And the reason he felt instinctively hostile toward Xu Dan was simple—
Jean Grey.
It was no secret that Logan had feelings for Phoenix Jean Grey.
Poor Cyclops—no one knew how many metaphorical green hats he'd been forced to wear.
Logan wasn't the kind of man to hold back when he liked a woman. He chased what he wanted directly.
But over time, he realized something he didn't want to accept:
Jean Grey didn't truly love her boyfriend Scott.
She loved someone else.
That realization nearly crushed him.
Still, Logan believed that if Jean and Scott ever broke up, he'd be the first to step forward and confess.
And today, he finally met the man whose name kept coming up around the woman he loved.
That man was Xu Dan.
Xu Dan sensed Logan's anger and resentment, but there was no real killing intent behind it.
"Mr. Logan," Xu Dan said calmly, "this shouldn't be hard to discuss. I need you to cooperate by simply lying down and doing almost nothing. Each experiment will pay you one hundred thousand dollars."
One hundred thousand dollars per experiment.
That was no small amount.
Logan fought underground boxing matches just to earn scraps.
And even then, he drank heavily—whatever he earned went straight down his throat.
For Wolverine, one hundred thousand dollars was a massive temptation.
Like a starving dog catching the scent of meat buns.
Yet when pride clashed with money, Logan struggled… and finally chose pride.
"Kid," Wolverine said bluntly, "fight me. If you win, I'll go with you—and you still pay the reward."
His expression didn't change in the slightest.
"But if you lose," he added coldly, "you'll never step foot in Xavier's School again."
Xu Dan turned and glanced at Professor X, then looked back at Logan.
"Logan, I don't actually want to fight you," Xu Dan said. "We'll have to cooperate afterward. If I hurt you by accident, what if you stop working properly for me?"
"You don't need to worry about that," Logan snarled. "Just figure out how to hit me first, brat!"
With that, Wolverine turned and walked outside. Xu Dan followed close behind.
The two arrived in the courtyard—a place that should have been filled with laughter.
But now, with everyone obsessed with games, very few students were outside.
Wolverine stared at Xu Dan like prey.
With a metallic snikt, adamantium claws slid out from between his fingers.
"Kid, if you admit defeat now, I'll let this go. But if you—"
"Enough. Come on."
His words were cut off mid-sentence.
Already furious, Wolverine lunged forward, slashing viciously with his claws.
Yet to Xu Dan, Logan's movements were painfully slow.
"Is that all?" Xu Dan asked calmly."If not, I can accept your surrender right now. And if you do, I'll double the price."
Double.
Two hundred thousand dollars per experiment.
Who could resist that?
Yet in Logan's ears, every word sounded less like generosity and more like mockery.
Damn it.
This kid was humiliating him.
"Aaahhh!"
With a furious roar, Wolverine slashed out wildly, claws flashing through the air.
