In the original story, Iron Man carried a nuclear missile and destroyed the Chitauri. In other words, if humanity had launched nuclear missiles toward the space portal from the very beginning, there would have been no need for ground combat at all—disputes could have been settled directly with nuclear weapons.
But now, Xu Dan had maximized the benefits of the battle. Not only had he helped mutants regain dignity and freedom, he had also obtained Chitauri technology, along with the Mind Stone and the Space Stone.
