Chapter 11 - Kira

As I slowly opened my eyes, I found myself being carried on Kira's back. Despite being almost her size, she seemed to be carrying me with ease. Her concerned voice cut through my groggy state, "You're awake?" I nodded, still feeling the weight of my exhaustion. My body ached from the injuries I had sustained during the encounter with the group.

I tried to recall the events that had led me to this point. I had been scavenging for food and weapons, but things took a turn for the worse when I stumbled upon the group. Thankfully, I managed to escape, but not without getting hurt. I didn't want to worry Kira any further, so I kept the details to myself.

"Thank you," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Kira's response was reassuring, "I promise to protect you guys. It's nothing..." She paused for a moment before continuing, "You want to say something, say it."

I hesitated, not wanting to burden her with my concerns. "Nothing... " I said, trying to brush it off. Kira chuckled, and for a moment, I felt a warmth that I had never experienced before. Being close to someone was a new feeling for me, and I wasn't sure how to process it.

As the morning sun began to rise, Kira and I started discussing our plan. She wanted me to return to our shelter, promising to continue searching for the others on her own. But I refused, telling her that it was too dangerous. Deep down, I knew that if Kira had made up her mind, there was no changing it. I decided to take a different approach.

"Take me with you," I said, trying to sound confident. "I left for them, and I won't go back without them."

Kira agreed, but only on the condition that I would recuperate first. That night, I started training again, and Kira joined me, doing stretches and crafting a new weapon for me. As we worked together, I realized that she was not only strong but also resourceful and intelligent.

The next day, Kira asked me about any clues I might have found regarding the others' whereabouts. I mentioned hearing gunshots in the distance, but I hadn't seen anyone. Kira wrote something in her notebook, her expression serious. She told me that she would go out to fetch food, but I didn't believe her. I decided to follow her secretly, keeping a safe distance.

As I watched, Kira returned to the street where we had first met. She flipped something over, and I heard a sloppy sound. I realized with a start that it was a body. Kira covered it up again and looked in my direction, "Little kid, I know you're there."

I revealed myself, impressed by Kira's sharp instincts. She explained that the body wasn't Eron's, but rather a stranger who had been shot. The gunshot wound wasn't the cause of death, however; the person had died from radioactive dust poisoning.

Kira asked me where the last gunshot was heard, and I pointed to the south. She nodded, her eyes gleaming with determination. "The gunshot was unprofessional... He didn't die because of the shot. He died because he was long poisoned by radioactive dust." She looked at the weapon in her hand, "We can't keep using these. We need to find the gunman and take his guns."

I stood up straight, trying to look braver than I felt. "Let's set off then."

Kira smiled, a hint of amusement in her voice. "You think you can?" She glanced at my injured feet, "Look at your condition."

I swung my feet, almost taking her down. "Really?" I said, trying to sound confident. Kira's expression changed to surprise, and she called me a brat. But I knew she was worried about me, and I was determined to accompany her, no matter what she said.

Together, we set off towards the south, ready to face whatever dangers lay ahead.
