Reed clenched his teeth. "I knew it."
"D-Does this mean the driver is still out there?" I asked in a panicked voice.
"We'll find him. I promise," he said in a dark tone that sent shivers down my spine.
Confusion and worry took over me. Who wanted me dead? Why didn't the cops catch something like this? If the driver's alive, then where could he be?
"Mrs. King?"
"Hmm?"
When Reed took his phone, our fingers brushed, and that brought me back to earth.
"This is the reason why I didn't wanna tell you."
"What? That I'd go pale and scream bloody murder?"
He chuckled, but it was brief.
"Look, I know Ares is an important figure in Midnight. He has enemies; it would have been more suspicious if he didn't, given the careers he destroys with one word."
I say that, but I wasn't truly clear with that idea.
"Mr. King is doing everything in his power to investigate this. It's been on for a month now, and he's still..." He wavered.
"Still what?"
