Chapter 163 - Chapter 163 The Mysterious Teleportation Portal

Nick Fury stared at the Tesseract, its pale blue light flickering in the center of the lab, casting shifting shadows across his face.

He took a cautious step forward, eyes narrowed at the volatile artifact.

Hearing the movement, Erik Selvig—already drenched in sweat from hours of monitoring the device—immediately called out without looking up:

"For your own safety, Director, I wouldn't get any closer."

Only then did he glance up—and flinched slightly at Fury's imposing silhouette looming near the containment field.

"The Tesseract is unstable," Selvig continued, voice tight with urgency. "It's like a live wire fused to a bomb. Any external interference could trigger a catastrophic energy release."

Fury's single eye fixed on him. "Could we cut its power? Unplug it. Shut it down."

Selvig let out a dry, humorless laugh. "It is the power source, Nick. It doesn't plug into anything. This isn't a toaster—it's a self-sustaining cosmic engine. Turning it off isn't an option."

Fury absorbed this in silence, jaw set. After a beat, he gave a curt nod. "Understood. Keep monitoring it. Alert me at the first sign of spatial distortion."

Selvig exhaled in relief and turned toward the exit—only to be halted by a soft thud from above.

A rope dropped from the ceiling vent. Agent Clint Barton rappelled down in one fluid motion, landing soundlessly beside Fury.

"Report," Fury said, still watching the Tesseract.

Barton's voice was low, professional. "Selvig's clean. Spent every waking hour in the lab since arrival. Minimal contact with personnel. No suspicious comms, no anomalies in behavior."

Fury's frown deepened. "A reclusive scientist. A suddenly active Tesseract. That's one hell of a coincidence."

Barton shook his head. "He wasn't even in the room when it first spiked. Whatever's happening, it's not his doing."

Fury said nothing, his mind racing through threat scenarios.

Then Barton added, quieter: "Sir… if the problem isn't on our side, maybe it's coming from the other side."

Fury's eye snapped to him. "'The other side'?"

Barton kept his gaze locked on the Tesseract. "Selvig said it's a doorway—an Einstein-Rosen bridge generator. If it's a door… it can be opened from both ends."

BZZZT—!

The Tesseract erupted.

Pale blue light flared into blinding radiance. The lab trembled violently. Alarms shrieked. Papers flew. Researchers dove for cover as consoles sparked and shattered.

"The portal—it's opening!" Selvig whispered, transfixed, his instruments spiking off the charts.

A low, guttural gurgle filled the air. Space itself warped before the Tesseract, twisting like fabric under immense strain. Then—a rift tore open. A swirling vortex of dark blue energy, limned with starlight, pulsed in the center of the chamber.

"Seal the lab!" Fury barked into his comm. "Highest alert! All units, lock down the perimeter!"

CRASH—!

The blast doors exploded inward. Dozens of S.H.I.E.L.D. tactical agents stormed in, fanning out in perfect formation. Rifles rose as one, barrels trained on the growing portal.

"Non-combatants, evacuate! Now!" the squad leader ordered.

The scientists scrambled out—except Selvig, who remained rooted in place, frantically logging energy surges.

Silence fell, thick and electric. Only the hum of the portal and the click of rifle safeties breaking echoed through the lab.

Then—movement.

From the vortex, a towering figure emerged.

At first, just a silhouette against the cosmic whirl. Then details sharpened: broad-shouldered, armored, radiating an alien stillness that prickled the air like static.

Fury drew his sidearm in one smooth motion, aiming dead center.

"Freeze!" His voice cut like steel. "One more step, and we open fire."

Every agent tensed, fingers resting on tr

iggers. The lab held its breath.

The figure took another step forward.
