Chapter 34 - Chapter 34 - The Fall of Suns

Year 12 - Late Summer, Aeltherion

The sky was a furnace.Nanook descended like a devouring sun, continents of fire turning night into a white noon. The Mirror-Tree shuddered; leaves bled silver and red. All across Aeltherion, the armies raised their eyes and saw the end of worlds.

Ketsuraku stepped to the highest root, cloak snapping in the heat. The Nexus Bracelet on his wrist woke with a hungry pulse. Around him stood his war circle. Cartethyia strung her crimson bow. Rosa spun her twin blood daggers until they sang. Luminous lifted her mirror-staff, glyphs blooming like constellations. Above, Odin's spear flashed gold, Surtr's greatsword dripped magma, and Hel's chains smoked with winter.

Nanook's voice broke the air."You grow a tree on bones. I will burn your river dry."

Ketsuraku raised his scythe."Then bleed for it."

The first wave struck. Solar spears screamed out of the sun-body and crashed against the Mirror-Tree's wards. Luminous flared her staff. A dome of code and glass snapped into place. Impacts cracked it like ice but did not break it. Rosa vanished into smoke and reappeared along the fiery spears, cutting runes out of the attacks so they fell as harmless slag. Cartethyia drew and loosed. Each arrow burst into a flowering lattice that turned flame to pollen drifting harmlessly across the blood rivers.

"Forward," Ketsuraku said, and the world obeyed.

The Valkyr fleets rose from the rivers. Surtr's fire giants marched out of portals of magma. Hel's dead took wing, frost trailing from their feathers. Asgard's hosts thundered across bridges of light. Every charge angled not at Nanook's body but at the burning cords that tethered him to the heavens.

"Cut his anchors," Odin roared. "Make the sun fall."

Ketsuraku opened his palm. The Nexus Bracelet split into seven lines of red code.

Katana. He carved a corridor through starfire.

Wakizashi. He severed a solar lash mid-snap.

Naginata. He hooked a falling sunstone and slung it aside.

Bow. He fired a needle of void straight into the corona, hollowing a path.

Flying blades. They swarmed like crimson swallows, slicing the script out of Nanook's lesser flares.

Scythe. He stepped and the horizon bent, harvesting a ring of fire and feeding it to the Mirror-Tree.

"Now," he whispered, and invoked the Dominion only creators speak.

Reality buckled. A second sky unfurled beneath the first, perfect as a lake. In that vast mirror, Nanook's sun-face appeared again, identical but vulnerable. Reflection has no armor.

"Hold him in the glass," Ketsuraku said.

Hel's chains shot up, hooked the mirrored sun, and locked. Frost spidered across fire. Surtr drove his blade through the reflection, pinning it to the world like a red butterfly. Odin hurled his spear. It split into a thousand dawns and nailed the corona in a circle of gold.

Nanook howled. "Maggots."

He tore free of one chain and hurled a star at the root. Luminous raised her staff and channeled the entire Exchange, every contract, every oath, every ledger. Law became shield. The star slowed as if wading through debts, then shattered into glittering debt-notes that the wind carried away.

Rosa appeared inside the mirrored sun, a smear of shadow at the heart of the glare. She left a line of scripture in blood across the core. "Invoice," she said, and vanished.

"Finish it," Cartethyia breathed.

Ketsuraku brought the scythe up. The Nexus reconfigured. The seven lines braided into one weapon: a crescent of black-red code that drank light.

"Sun-Eater," he named it, and leapt.

He sprinted up a staircase of his own reflections, boots hammering on images that formed and broke in time with his pulse. Nanook struck. Every blow tore mountains from the sky, but each time Ketsuraku turned the scythe and the hit fell into the blade and vanished as if swallowed by a sea too deep to sound.

He reached the mirrored sun. For a breath, the world held still. The Mirror-Tree hummed, roots digging into the void. Cartethyia's song rose behind him. Hel's chains tightened. Surtr laughed through his teeth. Odin's single eye blazed.

"Reality Rend," Ketsuraku said.

He cut down.

The scythe drew a line from crown to core. In the reflection, that line became law. Nanook split. The sun-body opened like a pomegranate. Out poured not flesh but memories of burning, the scream of every world he had ended. Souls tumbled like sparks.

"Go," Ketsuraku said gently, and Hel's ravens caught them, folding them in frost and mercy.

Nanook reeled back from both sky and mirror, half of him falling into the river of glass, the other half raging like a halved star. Ketsuraku landed upon the exposed heart. It was a sphere of white gold with a crack where Rosa's invoice bled.

"You are a candle," Ketsuraku told him. "I am the night that remembers."

Nanook struck one last time. The blow caved mountains in the distance and boiled seas. Ketsuraku took it, let it pass through him into the Mirror-Tree, and the Tree drank it like rain.

He set the scythe's point to the heart's crack. The Nexus pulsed. Blood, code, and void braided tighter than bone.

"Devour," he ordered, and the weapon obeyed.

The scythe became a throat of stars. It swallowed the heart. Fire tried to flee. Reflection offered no exit. Nanook's radiance folded on itself and went dark as a coal after storm.

Silence.

A long breath passed over Aeltherion, from river to root to highest leaf. Then the sky broke into cheers, drums, weeping, prayer. The armies roared the name of a god who was not born a god.

Ketsuraku stood alone upon the cooling wound where a sun had been. His body flickered, not with heat, but with meaning. The Mirror-Tree poured its light into him and he poured it back. The Nexus sealed to his wrist like a vow.

Cartethyia reached him first, ash streaking her cheek, gray eyes bright with a fierce joy. "You lived."

"Not exactly," he said, and smiled.

The change began.

His shadow lifted from the ground and wrapped him like a cloak. Veins of red light spread under his skin, then through it, then beyond it, sketching him as a being of lines and rivers. The Mirror-Tree answered with a peal like a bell struck in heaven. Hel bowed with half a smile. Odin inclined his head as to a peer. Surtr grinned like a volcano proud of a mountain.

Ix's voice slid along the bark. "From Nihility you borrowed. To Reflection you return. Welcome to the table, little sovereign."

The first rain fell.

Crimson drops, warm and gentle, scattered across the roots and cities and rivers. Wherever they touched, the soil shivered and rose in graceful forms, eyes opening like embers in snow.

Ketsuraku looked out over six million new heartbeats and felt each one answer his.

"My people," he whispered. "Rise."

He lowered the scythe. The Sun-Eater quieted, sated. Across the horizon, armies sheathed weapons. The gods faded to their thrones, leaving promises in their wake. The Mirror-Tree rustled like a cathedral of leaves at prayer.

Nanook was gone. The wound he left behind would take ages to heal. But in its place stood a river that had learned to reflect fire without breaking.

Ketsuraku turned to Cartethyia, to Rosa, to Luminous. He touched each brow. Crowns answered. The realm brightened.

"No more suns falling," he said. "Only worlds rising."

And for the first time since the first world bled, the sky over Aeltherion grew dark in peace, full of stars that did not hunt anything at all.
